Our middle school and high school plans maximize live instruction for all students while reducing daily student capacity in the building to allow for six feet of social distancing. Students will be divided into two cohorts and will engage in alternating days of in-person instruction in our school buildings and virtual instruction at home.

Visual Overview of Fall 2020 Instructional Schedule

Infographic in spanish.

In-Person Instruction

Daily schedule, arrival procedures, dismissal procedures, school breakfast & lunch (updated 1/6/21), special education & related services, athletics, clubs, & other extracurricular activities, social-emotional learning.

  • We are in the process of finalizing school start and end times. We do know that our schedules will closely resemble our traditional early dismissal schedule, with an approximate start time of 7:45 am and an approximate dismissal time of 12:00 pm. We will share the official start and dismissal times as soon as they are finalized and approved.
  • Our schedule follows the familiar pattern of A Day, B Day, A Day, B Day, etc.
  • 50% of the student body attends in-person instruction in the school building for two successive days while the other 50% accesses instruction virtually through Google Meet. The two cohorts of students then switch.  This infographic  provides a visual overview of our 50/50 Hybrid Model for FMS and MHS, as described above.  Please click here for the Spanish version .
  • Each class meeting will simultaneously include both in-person students and virtual students, all of whom are engaging in the same instruction at the same time.
  • Teachers will be logged into Google Meet from their classrooms so that the cohort at home can view instruction and follow along. Using screen sharing, videos, document cameras, and other methods, teachers will keep all students connected to learning and to each other, whether they are accessing instruction in school or at home.

Arrival times for buses and drop-offs will be staggered, and multiple entry points will likely be used to allow for safer entry into the building. Precise times will be posted in late August.

DIsmissal times for buses and drop-offs will be staggered, and multiple exit points will likely be used to allow for safer exit from the building. Precise times will be posted in late August.

Since lunch will not be served during the instructional day, "Grab & Go" meals containing both breakfast and lunch will be available at all schools for any student who wants one.  Meals for virtual students are also available for pickup (see below).  There will be no charge for meals.

Students in school will be offered a daily “Grab & Go” meal from 12:03 PM through dismissal, containing 1 breakfast and 1 lunch. Distribution will be in the cafeteria, at the main entrance and in the foyer outside the gym. Food Service will provide individually wrapped snacks for students eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch who cannot provide their own, to be consumed during the school day.  Students attending in person will pick up meals for their two at-home days of virtual learning.

Please click HERE for the August 2 communication from the Pupil Services Department. NOTE:  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE: masks, face shields, plexiglass) will be utilized in all of our self-contained classrooms across the district

Related Services

  • Services will be provided in small-group homogeneous sessions in a clean, neutral room

FMS In Class and Reading Support

  • Special Education teachers will work with co-teachers to modify instruction
  • Parallel teaching may occur during this time with modifications appropriate to students’ needs
  • Reading Interventionist will work with individual or homogeneous groups at times identified by students’ schedules/IEP services in a pull-out setting

FMS Resource Replacement

  • Teachers will meet on a rotational basis with students to provide modified academic content

FMS Multiple Disabilities

  • Students will attend every day
  • Students will work 1:1 or in diads with teachers and ABS staff to achieve IEP goals through their individual program books

Decisions about extracurricular activities, including FMS fall sports, will be made and communicated in October.

Social-Emotional Learning is an ongoing  District Priority . The Morris School District will continue to infuse social-emotional learning into district curriculum, professional development, and counseling practices, and will also include it in the synthesis of multiple forms of achievement data, in order to empower students to marshal the metacognitive skills necessary to develop a positive, future-looking self-narrative.

This academic year, particular attention will be paid to students' social and emotional well being in the specific light of the current public health crisis and its ongoing impact on young people. Amplified supports are in place for students who may be experiencing difficulty coping at home or at school.

Our  Spring 2020 SEL Newsletter  provides helpful strategies and resources for families.

All-Virtual Instruction

Participation in extracurricular activities.

At present, we are planning for an all-virtual alternative, called “Enhanced Virtual Learning,” in order to accommodate those students who cannot attend in person for health or other reasons.

In Enhanced Virtual Learning:

  • Students will be required to log into each of their classes via Google Meet at the same time the class is meeting in school.
  • Attendance will be required and will be recorded in each class.
  • Students will engage in each class online as if they were attending in person.
  • Students will view their teachers providing instruction on the day’s lesson in real time, take notes, participate in discussions and activities, complete assignments, etc.
  • We are also exploring opportunities for students to have additional time to meet with teachers individually or in small groups.

Virtual Students Meal Distribution (UPDATED 12/3) All students can pick up “Grab & Go” meals Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Friday's meal will include meals for Saturday and Sunday. There will be one location for pickup: Morristown High School (50 Early Street) will distribute meals from 8:00 am-9:00 am and again from 11:30 am-12:30 pm in the back of the building near the flagpole.

Students in Enhanced Virtual Learning can still participate in any extracurricular activities that are offered after school; however, the District will not provide transportation from students' homes back to the school.

Please click HERE for the August 2 communication from the Pupil Services Department.

  • Related services and consultation will be provided virtually to student/parent

FMS In Class Support and Reading Support

  • Specialized instruction will be designed to include accommodations and modifications within a specified, assigned Google Classroom.
  • Google Meets with parents/students will be set up to provide Special Education reading intervention per students’ IEPs
  • Small-group Meets with students to check in, clarify, ask questions, and review work
  • Special Education Reading interventionist may schedule groups with online students
  • Students will be provided with lessons via online playlist and completion will be checked by teacher
  • Students will have online meets to check in and receive instruction from the identified teacher
  • Students will have online meets to check in and receive instruction from an ABS or teacher staff
  • Data on learner progress will be taken daily

We continue to explore ways to incoroporate SEL into virtual instruction and to provide opportunities for students to develop and strengthen positive relationships with each other and with their teachers while they are learning virtually. Connection to the school community is paramount during these unprecedented times, when students who are learning remotely may feel increased moments of isolation.

Homework: Harmful for Students

Homework: Harmful for Students

Olivia Gonzales, Writer February 7, 2019

Homework, the one thing we all hate. It is stressful and detrimental, it keeps us away from our social lives, and it can lead to anxiety, depression, and isolation. It is the burden of children to get it done. The fear of failing and getting shamed by their parents is constantly weighing upon them. Too much pure pressure can lead to children eventually breaking. It is not a good thing to keep homework around.

All students experience the stress of homework, but sometimes too much is to much. The recommended time to spend on homework in middle school is 45 minutes to an hour. But a survey done in March of 2018 showed that we were doing up to three hours worth of homework (procon.org 1).  Three hours that could be spent socializing or completing more rewarding activities, like sports. Speaking of sports, they often take up the largest use of students’ time, and with some people it takes up the majority of their day, leaving no time for homework. This means that it would affect their grade and overall anxiety during certain classes. This is detrimental for students!

Homework is also very bad for mental health. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and isolation. Students remove themselves from your social life to accomplish work that stresses them out. A study done in California concluded that “…59%[of students] thought they had too much homework. 43% of respondents said that homework was their greatest source of stress, and 82% agreed that they were “often or always stressed by schoolwork.” The evidence speaks for itself: homework negatively affects students’ mental well-being.

Finally, the burden of homework is a large one. Children are fearful about failing and of not meeting their parents’ expectations. It’s crucial for kids to have free time, to have the time to relax and to take a break, and to really think about their mental and physical health. For example, if a student pulls an all-nighter to do homework, she won’t get any sleep and be more likely to fall asleep in class. It’s a vicious cycle that harms students.

All in all, homework can promote some good habits, like parents connecting with their children and them being able to see what their kids are learning. However, if you look at the evidence, homework is starting to look like the bad guy. What do you think?

Presidents’ Message 12/6/15

We hope you all enjoyed the wonderful talent of our FMS Orchestra last Wednesday night, many thanks and congratulations to Ms. Tomblin on a memorable night and for guiding our children in their musical pursuits. The music continues with our band concert this Wednesday, December 9th at 7:00 pm!

The FMS play rehearsals for Peter Pan have begun. Please remind your child to check homework now for their weekly schedule. A rehearsal schedule is also posted outside the cafeteria each week for their convenience.

We hope you enjoy the photo above, which really exemplifies the spirit of the holiday season. The House 1 – 8th Grade team leaders, Susan Carey, Allison Boehm, Melissa Calamari, Caitlin Folkes, and Zara Noori, led by Brian Matro, gathered all the students of House 1 outside to create this beautiful image and to pass on the message of peace.

Hanukkah begins tonight and we wish all of our families a joyous celebration of the Festival of Lights.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

  16. Homework: Harmful for Students

  19. Gagarin Cup Preview: Atlant vs. Salavat Yulaev
