Virtual Schools

Virtual schools have actually been around since long before the pandemic, although only privately in some locations. Now, many states offer free virtual schooling for K-12, and they need teachers to fill the online classrooms. In most cases, you’ll need to live in the state that provides the online school, for certification and testing purposes. There are also many private virtual school companies out there, which sometimes offer better pay rates than public virtual schools.

Note: As of 2022, many of the companies that work exclusively with Chinese students are not currently hiring new teachers. ( This is due to changes China has made in their laws. ) Others have cut their hiring dramatically but are still accepting applications. This is subject to change at any time.

This is a great way to begin your transition from the classroom – especially if you are currently teaching with your district. A second job or side hustle is a great way to fluff up your resume and show off your versatility. 10 Second Careers for Teachers

1. educational consultant.

An education consultant combines their teaching skills with their administrative skills to provide qualitative advice on school policies and procedures. This is a wonderful option for a second career for teachers. Education consultants can also serve as advisors on textbook projects, government agencies, non-profit think tanks and so on. Typically, Education Consultants require a master’s degree, Ph.D., Ed.D., or J.D.

You can even get additional certifications through the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) or the American Institute for Certified Educational Planners . If you have good analytical skills, are great at organizing and planning, and have a background in curriculum building, then this is the right career move for you.

5. Virtual Tutor

A virtual tutor is much like a virtual teacher, accept more flexibility in schedule and clientele. If you are more of an entrepreneurial type of person and want to be more specialized in one or two subjects, then this job could be great for you.

Instead of a classroom of 30 students, teachers can choose who and when you want to teach in this second career. This is often on a one-on-one basis. In the digital age, it’s even easier to market your small business and to spread the word that you are a teacher for hire. Websites such as Care.com and Tutors.com can help you find steady work. Your own social media network can often be a valuable resource as well.

6. Online Professor

With more online colleges and brick and mortar institutions offering courses online, the demand for online professors is on the rise. Teaching online is great for non-tenured professors in higher education either on-campus or completely remote for two-year and four-year colleges. To be an online professor, you’ll need to know how to design course curriculum, lecture, administer tests and assignments, and grade coursework. Sometimes online instructors can parlay their skill into a corporate training position and the salaries tend to be higher.

7. Freelance Career for Teachers Writer

If you want to be start your own business in teaching and you love to write, freelance writing can be a fascinating career. You can take the jobs that appeal to you and your writing style. Plus, you have the freedom to write articles, blogs, email sequences, white papers, etc. The list goes on and on. There is no limit to the type of work you can do as a freelance writer. It can be beneficial to have a search engine optimization (SEO) background, but it's not always required. If you are interested in building your SEO skills, though, websites like HubSpot and Semrush offer a range of free courses.

Copywriters write clear, concise copy for different marketing materials. Folks often use "content writer" and "copywriter" interchangeably, but copywriters focus on short-form copy like ads and social media posts.

Think of it this way: a content writer's goal is to bring awareness to a brand or product, while a copywriter's goal is to get the user to act (make a purchase, sign up for a newsletter, etc.).

Technical Writer

Different companies will focus on different social media platforms, so it's best to be familiar with all of the popular ones (like Facebook , Instagram , TikTok , LinkedIn and Twitter ).

Your students will likely be from other countries, so be prepared to work either early or late hours depending on time zone compatibility.

Tutoring is a flexible remote option for those who are still in school or don't have any full-time work experience. As long as you're skilled in a specific subject area, you can tutor.

Tutoring allows for plenty of flexibility, making it perfect for both students and those looking for a side gig.

Keep in mind that a bachelor's degree may help if your students are in high school or college. But parents with younger children may prefer to hire someone a bit closer to their child's age (whether it's for relatability or cheaper rates).

  • Adaptability

Average salary : Most tutoring roles have hourly pay. The average pay in the U.S. is $24.20 per hour (Indeed).

11. Pet Sitter

Pet sitting is the ultimate side gig. It's flexible, you don't need any formal experience and it's always in demand. But if you can make it your full-time role, you can make a decent amount of money.

People usually look for pet sitters to walk their dogs during the day or watch their pets while they're on vacation. If you have the capability to board multiple animals at once in your own home, you can easily increase the amount of money you make per day.

A familiarity with animals is of course helpful, but sites like Rover and Wag don't require you to have any professional experience.

You can also apply for a local pet-sitting business if you'd prefer to have someone else find clients for you. Keep in mind that you probably won't be able to set your own rates in this case, though.

How to Get a Remote Job Without Any Experience

Just entering the workforce? There are a few things you can do to help get an interview for a remote job that pays well even if your resume is a bit thin:

Apply For Entry-Level Roles

These types of jobs will vary by industry, but they typically require minimal education and experience. The purpose of an entry-level job is to help someone get their start in a specific industry.

Most job search engines like LinkedIn and Indeed let you filter roles by experience. But you can also search for roles in your field that include words like "entry-level," "junior," or "associate."

Highlight Transferable Skills

Even if you don't have on-the-job experience, chances are you've learned skills through school, volunteer or life experience.

Say you manage your family's finances—you have experience with budgeting. Or you held a leadership role in a club—you have leadership and communication experience.

Here are some additional transferable skills you might have:

Pro tip : When applying for a job, tailor your resume to that specific role. Saying you have organization skills is great, but how will these skills specifically help you succeed in the position?

Intern or Volunteer To Learn

If you want to enter a highly specialized industry, it can be more difficult to stand out among applicants. Investing your time in an internship or volunteer opportunity can help you build experience without a previous full-time role.

Sites like Taproot and Catchafire allow you to volunteer your skills to nonprofits and other causes. This will help you work on your craft—plus it will look great on your resume.

Take Online Courses To Build New Skills

Even if you don't have the time to intern or volunteer, you can take advantage of online courses.

Coursera offers a wide range of online courses, many of which are free. Sites like Codeacademy and Google also have plenty of free options for those looking to build coding or marketing skills.

Create a Portfolio

You don't need professional work experience to create a portfolio. Say you're a graphic designer. You can include work from school that you're proud of. Or even create new graphics catered to the industry or companies you apply to.

Use a site like Squarespace and Wix to create your portfolio for free.

How To Tell if a Remote Job Is a Scam

When searching for jobs, be wary—if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Unfortunately, some people post fake job ads to steal personal information or trick people into paying fake "training fees."

Here are additional tell-tale signs of remote job scams that you should avoid:

  • The company doesn't have a website or online presence
  • The employer asks you for personal information before you get a job offer
  • The job listing promises that you'll "get rich quick" for little actual work
  • The employer's email address is @gmail.com or @yahoo.com rather than a legitimate company name
  • The company is an MLM (I.e., a multi-level marketing scheme )
  • You get a job offer immediately and are pressured to accept it quickly

If you do run into a scam during your job search, you can report it to the Better Business Bureau .

Some gender disparities widened in the U.S. workforce during the pandemic

The COVID-19 recession resulted in a  steep but transitory  contraction in employment, with greater  job losses among women than men. The recovery began in  April 2020 and is not complete. As of the third quarter of 2021, the labor force ages 25 and older remains nearly 2 million below its level in the same quarter of 2019.

The pandemic is associated with an increase in some gender disparities in the labor market. Among adults 25 and older who have no education beyond high school, more women have left the labor force than men. Other disparities have stayed the same or even narrowed: The gender pay gap has remained steady, for example, and the difference in the average hours worked by men and women has slightly diminished.

The COVID-19 recession differed from prior recent recessions in that it disproportionately eliminated jobs employing women. Media accounts often referred to it as a “ shecession .” As the economy and labor market have been recovering for more than 21 months, Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to investigate if there are lingering impacts on the labor market opportunities of women.

Labor force estimates and average hours worked are derived from the monthly Current Population Survey (CPS), sponsored jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The CPS is the nation’s premier labor force survey and is the basis for the monthly national unemployment rate released on the first Friday of each month. The CPS is based on a sample survey of about 70,000 households . The estimates are not seasonally adjusted.

For a quarter of the sample each month, the CPS also records data on usual hourly earnings for workers paid by the hour and usual weekly earnings and hours worked for other workers.

The CPS microdata files analyzed were provided by the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) at the University of Minnesota .

The COVID-19 outbreak has affected data collection efforts by the U.S. government in its surveys, especially limiting in-person data collection. This resulted in about an 8 percentage point dec rease in the response rate for the CPS in September 2021. It is possible that some measures of labor market activity and its demographic composition are affected by these changes in data collection.

Overall, the number of women ages 25 and older in the labor force has fallen 1.3% since the third quarter of 2019, similar to the 1.1% decline of men in the labor force.

But this modest overall change obscures divergent outcomes for labor force members with different levels of education. Women who have no education beyond high school exited the labor force in greater numbers than similarly educated men. However, the pandemic has not interrupted the long-running gains of  women among the college-educated  labor force.

From the third quarter of 2019 to the same quarter of 2021, the number of women in the labor force who are not high school graduates decreased 12.8%, dwarfing the 4.9% contraction among comparably educated men. The pandemic also disproportionately affected women with a high school diploma. The ranks of women in the high-school-educated labor force have declined 6.0% since the third quarter of 2019. The labor force of similarly educated men has fallen only 1.8%.

Among the labor force with at least some amount of education beyond high school, women have fared at least as well as men. The number of men and women in the labor force who have some college experience but not a bachelor’s degree has contracted for both groups, with no strong disparities between the two. Both men and women with at least a bachelor’s degree saw positive gains in the labor force (2.7% and 3.9%, respectively) from 2019 to 2021.

What accounts for the larger labor force  withdrawals among less-educated women  than men during the pandemic? It is complex but there seems to be a consensus that it partly  reflects how women are overrepresented  in certain health care, food preparation and personal service occupations that were sharply curtailed at the start of the pandemic. Although women overall are more likely than men to be able to work remotely, they are  disproportionately employed in occupations  that require them to work on-site and in close proximity to others.

It is less clear whether women’s parental roles and  limited child care  and schooling options have played a large role in forcing them to exit the labor market. The number of mothers and fathers in the labor force has declined in similar fashion over the past two years.

Turning to the number of hours employees work per week, on average, there have been small changes associated with the pandemic and they have occurred among men. In the third quarter of 2021, women ages 25 and older worked 37.5 hours on average in paid employment, unchanged from how much they worked two years earlier. Men ages 25 and older worked 41.6 hours on average in the third quarter of 2021. That is 0.7 fewer hours than they worked pre-pandemic (42.2). So, the disparity in hours of paid employment between women and men workers has somewhat narrowed.

The pandemic is also not associated with a widening of the  gender pay gap . Among full- and part-time workers ages 25 and older, women earned 86% of what men earned based on median hourly earnings in the third quarter of 2021. Two years ago, the estimated gender pay gap was 85%.

The overall pay gap partly reflects that employed women have higher levels of education than employed men. In 2021, 48% of women workers ages 25 and older had completed at least a bachelor’s degree compared with 40% of men. Workers with at least a bachelor’s degree tend to earn more and thus women’s earnings are boosted by their greater educational attainment. The gender pay gap is greater when you look at groups of women and men with equal levels of education. The gap depends on the education level, but in 2021 women ages 25 and older earned closer to 80 cents on the dollar compared with equally educated men.
