How To Find the Best Remote Teaching Jobs

Work from home and meet students from around the world!

Teacher wearing glasses and holding an English lesson worksheet with a quote, "Making more than I would in local schools, full benefits, and pension."

When COVID-19 shut down schools a couple of years ago, teachers everywhere were suddenly thrust into online teaching. It was an extremely difficult time for teachers, and many were glad to return to physical classrooms when they could. Others, though, found that they really loved teaching online. For some folks, remote teaching jobs are actually a much better fit. If you’re on the hunt for one of these positions, here are some places to start.

Virtual Schools

Virtual schools have actually been around since long before the pandemic, although only privately in some locations. Now, many states offer free virtual schooling for K-12, and they need teachers to fill the online classrooms. In most cases, you’ll need to live in the state that provides the online school, for certification and testing purposes. There are also many private virtual school companies out there, which sometimes offer better pay rates than public virtual schools.

Real Teacher Experience

“Love it! This is my first year and after years of searching have finally found my home! Making more than I would in local schools, full benefits, and pension! Have the best group of teachers and admin is a dream!” (Jennifer L., Stride K12 teacher)

Remote teaching jobs quote: “Love it! This is my first year and after years of searching have finally found my home! Making more than I would in local schools, full benefits, and pension! Have the best group of teachers and admin is a dream!”

Finding Virtual School Remote Teaching Jobs

To find public school remote teaching jobs in your state, do a web search to find out if they offer virtual school and have any openings. You can also check into the companies that run these schools, both public and private. Here are some to try.

  • Stride K12 : This company runs virtual schools in multiple states and has lots of openings for full- and part-time online teachers. Teachers report that the pay is as good or better than local districts, and benefits and retirement are provided too.
  • Connections Academy: This is another popular choice for public school districts, with many open positions.

ESL Online Teaching

Some of the most popular remote teaching jobs are the ones teaching English as a second language. You can work for companies that have their own curricula to follow, or register to do one-on-one or small class discussion practice. These jobs can be ideal if you’re looking to work part-time, but note that many of them require you to work odd hours to line up with daytime across the world.

“I love that the hours are so flexible and when I need to cancel, I can. I work before school and on the weekends. The cons are the hours themselves: they are early mornings or late nights so it can be tough if you have a full-time day job. Once you learn the lessons and program features, there isn’t any prep required at all. So that’s nice!” (Alex L., Qkids teacher)

Remote teaching jobs quote: I love that the hours are so flexible. Once you learn the lessons and program features, there isn’t any prep required at all.

Finding ESL Remote Teaching Jobs

There are multiple companies offering these jobs, and it might be worth applying to a few and trying them out to see which fit your needs best. The website Online English Teaching is chock-full of information for those interested in these types of jobs, and it is a terrific place to start.

Note: As of 2022, many of the companies that work exclusively with Chinese students are not currently hiring new teachers. ( This is due to changes China has made in their laws. ) Others have cut their hiring dramatically but are still accepting applications. This is subject to change at any time.

  • VIPKid : In this full-immersion one-on-one program for kids 4 to 12 in China, teachers use a predesigned program and don’t need to speak any language but English. See our full review of the VIPKid teacher experience here.
  • Qkids : Similar to VIPKid, teachers use a preset curriculum to teach classes to small groups of up to four Chinese students. Qkids handles all the administrative stuff, including parent communication, so your time is focused on teaching. See our full review of Qkids here.
  • iTalki : This site offers the chance to teach and learn a wide variety of languages, including English. Professional teachers must provide proof of certification, then can set their own rates and curriculum.

Online Tutor

Tutoring is a lot like teaching, but in a more personalized setting. If you love getting close to your students and focusing on the subjects you know best, this might be for you. There are lots of online tutoring sites available, especially for test prep. You can also strike out on your own, building up clients in a way that fits your schedule.

“I love iTutor ! We have a flexible schedule, easy platform, and I adore my kids and adults.” (Beth A., online tutor)

Online English teaching

Working as an online teacher

Online teachers must be comfortable with computers and technology. You’ll interact with students through email, message boards, chat rooms or via virtual reality platforms and software. Some online teachers post video or audio lectures online and provide their students with downloadable materials. Online teachers need to be flexible, as they're expected to answer students’ questions promptly.

Many online classes are set up so that all students attend a chat room at the same time and hear, see or read their online teacher's words simultaneously with live discussion via a message board.

Other online courses do not take place in real-time, but instead, provide material that students can download and study at their own pace.

Trump rally shooter Thomas Crooks: Neighbors, classmates, employer speak

A 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania fired multiple shots at former President Donald Trump at a rally on Saturday evening.

A bullet grazed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's upper right ear , leaving him bloodied but not seriously injured. One rally attendee was killed in the gunfire and two others were "critically injured," authorities later said.

Here's what we know:

Who is the shooter at the rally?

The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the person behind the assassination attempt. Agency officials released little additional information, saying its investigation remains active and ongoing. They did not indicate what Crooks' motive might have been.

Crooks worked at a nearby nursing home. An administrator there told USA TODAY that the company was shocked to learn of the shooting and that Crooks had passed a background check for his job.

What did Thomas Crooks do at the crime scene?

During the shooting Saturday, Trump's right ear was injured, seconds before he was whisked off stage by Secret Service personnel.  One man attending the rally was killed  and two others were injured; Crooks was then killed by Secret Service agents , authorities said.

FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said on a call with media Sunday afternoon that authorities found "a suspicious device" when they searched the shooter's vehicle. Bomb technicians inspected the device and rendered it safe.

"I'm not in a position to provide any expertise on the specific components of any potential bombs or suspicious packages," Rojek added.

Rojek said law enforcement is sending the rifle and Crooks' cell phone, along with other evidence, to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia "for processing and exploitation."

"We're in the process of searching his phone," Rojek said.

Maps and graphics: What happened in the Trump assassination attempt

What is Crooks' background?

Crooks is registered to vote as a Republican in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, according to county voter records. His voter registration status has been active since 2021.

Federal Election Commission records show that in January 2021, Crooks made a $15 donation to the Progressive Turnout Project, a group working to increase voter turnout for Democrats.

Born Sept. 20, 2003, Crooks does not have a criminal record in Pennsylvania, nor has he been sued there, according to state court records. There is no record of him in federal court databases, either.

Where did Thomas Crooks work?

Crooks worked as a dietary aid, a job that generally involves food preparation, at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, less than a mile from his home. In a statement provided to USA TODAY on Sunday, Marcie Grimm, the facility's administrator, said she was "shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement."

"Thomas Matthew Crooks performed his job without concern and his background check was clean," Grimm said. "We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials at this time. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on any specifics. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Former President Trump and the victims impacted by this terrible tragedy. We condemn all acts of violence."

The facility is owned by Kennett Square, Pennsylvania-based Genesis Healthcare. A job posting from the company for a dietary aid in the Pittsburgh area puts the pay at $16 an hour.

Thomas Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania

Crooks' home address is listed in Bethel Park, a suburb in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, voter records show. That three-bedroom brick house has been owned since 1998 by Matthew and Mary Crooks, who appear to be his parents. Telephone calls to the couple were not returned overnight.

Near the Crooks home, Dean Sierka, 52, said he had known Crooks and his parents for years, as neighbors separated by only a few houses. Sierka’s daughter attended school with Crooks from elementary school through Bethel Park High School, and said she remembers him as quiet and shy.

Dean and his daughter said they would see Crooks at least once a week, often when Crooks was walking to work.

“You wouldn’t have expected this,” Dean Sierka said. “The parents and the family are all really nice people.”

At Bethel Park High School

Thomas Crooks graduated two years ago from Bethel Park High School, the Bethel Park School District confirmed. He was included in a 2022 local news article about recipients of a National Math & Science Initiative Star Award at the public high school, which enrolls about 1,300 students.

Jason Kohler attended Bethel Park High School with Crooks and said he remembers the 20-year-old sat alone at lunch and was “bullied almost every day.” Kids picked on Crooks for wearing camouflage to class and his quiet demeanor, Kohler, 21, said.

Since hearing Crooks has been named as the shooter, Kohler has been speaking with classmates who knew him, most of whom are stunned by the news.“It’s really hard to comprehend,” he said.

Sean Eckert said he went to school with Crooks from 5th through 12th grade. He said Crooks always went by “Tom.“

They shared classes together in elementary and middle school. Eckert said Crooks, though "fairly smart," was quiet and rarely spoke up.

Eckert said Crooks did not seem to have many friends. He didn't recall Crooks being playing any sports, being involved in any clubs or student groups or going to popular campus events. He often wore hunting clothes, so Eckert assumed he hunted.

No one in Eckert's group text from high school seemed to know Crooks very well, he said. They were shocked that someone from their town had done this. They were even more surprised that it was Tom Crooks.

Nursing aide turned sniper: Thomas Crooks' mysterious plot to kill Trump

The gaming-oriented online site Discord said Sunday that it had found an account that appeared to be linked to the shooting suspect. The site removed the account, which “was rarely utilized, has not been used in months, and we have found no evidence that it was used to plan this incident, promote violence, or discuss his political views,“ according to a statement from a Discord spokesperson, adding that the company will coordinate closely with law enforcement.

Crooks was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, a shooting club about 8 miles from his home. It is a sprawling complex of 180 acres with rifle, pistol and archery ranges, an area for dog training and a clubhouse, according to the club website. An attorney for the club, Robert Bootay III, confirmed Crooks' membership in an email to USA TODAY, but would not offer additional details.

Where is Bethel Park, Pennsylvania?

Bethel Park is a suburb of Pittsburgh and home to more than 32,000 people – about one thousand fewer than four years ago, according to the latest Census estimates.

The majority-white, mostly college-educated community has a median household income of $102,177.

Described as a charming retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city to its north, Bethel Park boasts tree-line streets, friendly neighborhoods and a low crime rate.

Bethel Park is about 42 miles south of Butler, where the Trump rally was held. The leafy suburban street was alive with law enforcement overnight amid a multi-agency response to the shooting. A member of the Allegheny County bomb squad told reporters his team was headed into the house around midnight, but did not say why.

For hours afterward, the scene remained quiet, with deer passing under the police tape and an occasional neighbor stepping out of their house to see what was happening.

John Wolf, a local construction superintendent who lives down the road, said he’d talked with several worried neighbors.

“People are scared,” Wolf said.

How did Crooks shoot at Trump?

Crooks had been positioned on a rooftop more than 100 yards from the rally site, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said. Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle from the scene.

Joseph Price, special agent in charge of the ATF in Pittsburgh, said the weapon used by the shooter was a rifle.“It was nothing special,” he said in an interview in the parking lot of the Butler Township Municipal Building.

Law enforcement is following up on a “number of suspicious occurrences,” said Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police, including accounts from witnesses who said they tried to flag police about the activity of a person outside the rally moments before the shooting.

The FBI said in a news release that the situation “remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at  FBI.gov/butler  or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.”

Why crewai, getting started, key features, quick tutorial, write job descriptions, trip planner, stock analysis, connecting your crew to a model, how crewai compares, contribution.

The power of AI collaboration has too much to offer. CrewAI is designed to enable AI agents to assume roles, share goals, and operate in a cohesive unit - much like a well-oiled crew. Whether you're building a smart assistant platform, an automated customer service ensemble, or a multi-agent research team, CrewAI provides the backbone for sophisticated multi-agent interactions.

To get started with CrewAI, follow these simple steps:

1. Installation

If you want to install the 'crewai' package along with its optional features that include additional tools for agents, you can do so by using the following command: pip install 'crewai[tools]'. This command installs the basic package and also adds extra components which require more dependencies to function."

2. Setting Up Your Crew

In addition to the sequential process, you can use the hierarchical process, which automatically assigns a manager to the defined crew to properly coordinate the planning and execution of tasks through delegation and validation of results. See more about the processes here .

  • Role-Based Agent Design : Customize agents with specific roles, goals, and tools.
  • Autonomous Inter-Agent Delegation : Agents can autonomously delegate tasks and inquire amongst themselves, enhancing problem-solving efficiency.
  • Flexible Task Management : Define tasks with customizable tools and assign them to agents dynamically.
  • Processes Driven : Currently only supports sequential task execution and hierarchical processes, but more complex processes like consensual and autonomous are being worked on.
  • Save output as file : Save the output of individual tasks as a file, so you can use it later.
  • Parse output as Pydantic or Json : Parse the output of individual tasks as a Pydantic model or as a Json if you want to.
  • Works with Open Source Models : Run your crew using Open AI or open source models refer to the Connect crewAI to LLMs page for details on configuring your agents' connections to models, even ones running locally!

crewAI supports using various LLMs through a variety of connection options. By default your agents will use the OpenAI API when querying the model. However, there are several other ways to allow your agents to connect to models. For example, you can configure your agents to use a local model via the Ollama tool.

Please refer to the Connect crewAI to LLMs page for details on configuring you agents' connections to models.

Autogen : While Autogen does good in creating conversational agents capable of working together, it lacks an inherent concept of process. In Autogen, orchestrating agents' interactions requires additional programming, which can become complex and cumbersome as the scale of tasks grows.

ChatDev : ChatDev introduced the idea of processes into the realm of AI agents, but its implementation is quite rigid. Customizations in ChatDev are limited and not geared towards production environments, which can hinder scalability and flexibility in real-world applications.

CrewAI's Advantage : CrewAI is built with production in mind. It offers the flexibility of Autogen's conversational agents and the structured process approach of ChatDev, but without the rigidity. CrewAI's processes are designed to be dynamic and adaptable, fitting seamlessly into both development and production workflows.

CrewAI is open-source and we welcome contributions. If you're looking to contribute, please:

CrewAI uses anonymous telemetry to collect usage data with the main purpose of helping us improve the library by focusing our efforts on the most used features, integrations and tools.

There is NO data being collected on the prompts, tasks descriptions agents backstories or goals nor tools usage, no API calls, nor responses nor any data that is being processed by the agents, nor any secrets and env vars.

Data collected includes:

  • So we can understand how many users are using the latest version
  • So we can decide on what versions to better support
  • So we know what OS we should focus on and if we could build specific OS related features
  • So we make sure we are testing internally with similar use cases and educate people on the best practices
  • Understand where we should focus our efforts
  • Understand if we improved the features or maybe even drop them
  • Understand if we should focus more on parallel execution
  • Improved support on most used languages
  • Understand high level use cases so we can build better tools, integrations and examples about it
  • Understand out of the publically available tools, which ones are being used the most so we can improve them

Users can opt-in sharing the complete telemetry data by setting the share_crew attribute to True on their Crews.

Education | Educators wonder how to teach the writings of Alice Munro in wake of daughter’s revelations

Educators are now rethinking her life and work.

Alice Munro

But since learning that Munro declined to leave her husband after he had sexually assaulted and harassed her daughter, Lecker now wonders how to teach her work, or if he should even try.

“I had decided to teach a graduate course on Munro in the winter of 2025,” Lecker says. “Now I have serious questions whether I feel ethically capable of offering that course.”

Andrea Robin Skinner, daughter of Munro and James Munro, wrote in the Toronto Star earlier this month that she had been assaulted at age 9 by Munro’s second husband, Gerard Fremlin. She alleged that he continued to harass and abuse her for the next few years, losing interest when she reached her teens. In her 20s, she told her mother about Fremlin’s abuse. But Munro, after briefly leaving Fremlin, returned and remained with him until his death in 2013. She would explain to Skinner that she “loved him too much” to remain apart.

When Munro died in May at age 92, she was celebrated worldwide for narratives which documented rare insight into her characters’ secrets, motivations, passions and cruelties, especially those of girls and women. Admirers cited her not just as a literary inspiration, but as a kind of moral guide, sometimes described as “Saint Alice.” A New York Times essay that ran shortly after her death, by Canadian author Sheila Heti, was titled “I Don’t Write Like Alice Munro, But I Want to Live Like Her.”

“No one knows the compromises another makes, especially when that person is as private as she was and transforms her trials into fiction,” Heti wrote. “Yet whatever the truth of her daily existence, she still shines as a symbol of artistic purity.”

Educators in Canada and beyond are now rethinking her life and work. At Western University in London, Ontario, Munro’s alma mater, the school has posted a statement on its website saying that it was “taking time to carefully consider the impact” of the revelations. Since 2018, Western University has offered an Alice Munro Chair in Creativity, with a mission to “Lead the creative culture of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, serving as a mentor and a model.” That chair, held for the past academic year by Heti, will be left unfilled as “we carefully consider Munro’s legacy and her ties to Western,” according to the school.

Requests with Heti’s agent and publicists for comment were not immediately answered.

For the fall semester at Harvard University, authors and faculty members Laura van den Berg and Neel Mukherjee will be co-teaching “Reading for Fiction Writers,” a review of literary works ranging from the science fiction of Octavia Butler to the “realist” fiction of Munro. Van den Berg, a prize-winning writer whose books include the story collection “The Isle of Youth” and the novel “State of Paradise,” says that Munro’s failure to support Skinner has forced her to rethink her approach to the class.

“I’ll never read Munro the same away again, and won’t be teaching her the same way,” she says. “To me, what was so painful about what Andrea Skinner has been through is the silence. And feeling that she could break her silence after her mother was gone. To me, to just stand in front a group of students and read the lecture I had originally prepared would feel like a second silencing.”

A former student of Lecker’s, Kellie Elrick, says she is still figuring out how Munro should be taught and how to think of her work. Munro’s stories have enriched her life, she says, and she doesn’t regret reading them. Elrick, entering her fourth year at McGill, sees parallel narratives, “difficult to reconcile,” of “Munro the writer” and “Munro the mother.”

“I think that it’s perhaps both productive and dangerous to read an author’s work biographically,” she added. “It may allow us (the readers) to think we may understand things, but there are things we can never truly know about the lives and intentions of writers.”

One of the Munro stories that van den Berg and Mukherjee plan to teach is “Friend of My Youth,” narrated by a woman long estranged from her mother, whose “ideas were in line with some progressive notions of her times, and mine echoed the notions that were favored in mine.” Mukherjee, a Booker Prize finalist in 2014 for the novel “The Lives of Others,” is unsure about how, or whether, to work in the recent news about Munro when teaching ”Friend of My Youth,” which the author had dedicated to her own mother.

He believes in separating the “art from the artist, that we all have done bad things.” He considers himself “very conflicted,” sharing van den Berg’s horror that Munro chose her husband over her daughter, but also finding that her work may have gained “richer depth, now that we know something in her life that she may have been trying to come to terms with.”
