UCLA Housing Change - Successful

<h2>Hey guys, just thought I’d let you know that the CAR (Change of Assignment Request) I submitted for UCLA housing seems to have worked already. Which is weird, because it said we would be notified by mail in writing in August or something, I thought. Just thought I’d put it out there so people who submitted a CAR know there’s likely to be an email sent to you soon, and because all the other threads I’d read about this made it sound like we were all gonna just try to trade with each other 2 weeks into the semester or something. </h2>

<p>We are pleased to inform you that your online change of assignment request (CAR) has been approved. Based on your preferences, your 2011-2012 housing assignment has been changed to a Double in De Neve.</p>

<p>Please be aware that there may be additional fees associated with this change in your housing contract. You will receive an email from Housing Accounts Receivable Department shortly regarding any changes to your housing account balance and how your future payments are affected. </p>

<p>Finally, you will be sent an email on in August which will indicate your assigned move-in date and time, room assignment, and roommate contact information.</p>

<p>I think you may have some of your info mixed up… As far as I know, you are able to submit a CAR until July 19th and CARs are approved when space is available. If space is available, you will be notified that your CAR has been approved. They will continue to approve CARs until July 26th. After that if your CAR has not been approved, they will notify you that your request have not been granted.</p>

<p>We will be notified our room and roommate assignment in mid-August (which maybe what you were thinking of). And for the trade thing I think that is for people whose CAR has not been granted and they find people who are willing to trade with them.</p>

<p>I was just letting people know that they started approving them.</p>

Students express frustration over room assignments, exchanging process.

As the school year approaches, many students are attempting to swap their allocated UCLA Housing rooms via Reddit and other social media platforms.

Throughout the summer, students are able to submit a Change of Assignment Request, which housing staff reviews, UCLA Housing said in an emailed statement. Students can also confirm a mutual swap they have agreed to starting Sept. 5 when assignments are finalized. UCLA Housing and Residential Life also hold events to help facilitate transferring of rooms during the academic year, the statement added.

UCLA Housing said it processed around 2,000 Change of Assignment Requests at the beginning of the 2022-2023 academic year. Students have also been posting on online platforms, including Reddit, in an attempt to find people to swap with.

Ava Dalgaard, a third-year sociology student, said she wanted to switch rooms because despite only listing on-campus housing options on her application preferences, she was still placed in an eight-person off-campus apartment.

“Somehow I got put into an eight person apartment,” she said. “Ideally all of the options that I put were also doubles, no larger than three people.”

She added that she wanted to live on-campus because UCLA off-campus housing does not provide a meal plan for campus dining, which is important to her to have.

Dalgaard said she found someone a few weeks ago on Reddit to swap rooms with her to a double plaza with a private bathroom in a De Neve dorm.

Prayer Noyogiere, a second-year psychology student, said she was originally placed in a plaza triple dorm room, which is unsuitable for her personal circumstances. After attempting a mutual swap, she said she also filled out a form requesting an off-campus apartment, indicating that it was only as a last resort.

However, UCLA Housing canceled her on-campus housing offer and placed her in an apartment despite her request for an on-campus swap remaining open, she said. Noyogiere added that she finally found someone to swap into a double dorm room, but that she is still seeking another swap.

“Currently, I’m really working with CAE (the Center for Accessible Education) because I’m trying to see if I can get a single,,” she said. “The (double) suites don’t have AC, … and I have asthma.”

Noyogiere said she thinks the lottery housing system could be improved to be more accommodating to students.

“What is the point of me choosing my preferences if I’m … going to get something that’s at the bottom of my list?” she said.

The opportunity to submit a Change of Assignment Request should be open earlier, Dalgaard said, adding that she was worried the person with whom she agreed to swap would pull out before the form opened Sept. 5. UCLA Housing said in the emailed statement that the form opens closer to the beginning of school so all students can swap having received their final housing assignments.

Dalgaard also said offering meal plans to students living in apartments would have been helpful in easing her housing concerns. Additionally, improving access to information about which amenities come with each housing option would have been useful, she said.

Noyogiere said that with the announcement of new apartment buildings in the Westwood area, she hopes the process will be easier in the future.

“I just really hope in the nearby future that there will just be a lot more options available to people,” Noyogiere said.

Assignment Process For Single Graduate and Student Family Housing

Everything you need to know about room assignments and requests for contract changes.

We do not make offers to the exact room space as availability is highly volatile. Instead, housing offers are made to the Building and Room Type, and applicants may choose to accept or decline the offer. Applicants who decline an offer are welcome to reapply, but their application will be considered after current applicants. If an offer is accepted and payment is remitted, we will send out exact unit numbers, roommate information, and move-in information via e-mail about seven (7) days prior to the incoming resident's contract start date.

All students wanting to be roommates should update their application to reflect the requested roommate's information. We will take mutual roommate requests into consideration when making assignments. Please note that roommate requests are not guaranteed and that prospective roommate pairs must be offered to the same building and room type (for example: Westwood Furnished 2 bedroom) in order for us to consider the request when making assignments.

We are only able to consider transfer requests during the quarterly Open Transfer Period. The Open Transfer Period for single graduate and family housing will be held at the beginning of each quarter during the standard academic year. Dates and details on the transfer request process can be found in Ask Housing . Please note that while we accommodate as many transfers as possible, due to limited availability no transfer request is guaranteed.

Do not submit a transfer request if you have a medical need for a change of assignment. Please contact the Center for Accessible Education so that they can review your case.

Our office does not review transfer requests based on roommate conflict. Issues concerning resident conduct and conflict should be brought to the attention of the Office of Residential Life. Residents in Weyburn Terrace and Hilgard Apartments should contact University Apartments North- Residential Life Staff . Residents in Keystone Mentone, Rose Avenue, Venice Barry, The Boulevard and University Village should contact University Apartments South- Residential Life Staff.

I am graduating but my partner will still be a student. Can I transfer primary tenancy to them as I will no longer be eligible?

Residents of University Village may submit a request to transfer tenancy to their domestic partner's name by sending an e-mail to our office at [email protected] . The request should include the new lease holder's full name, university ID number, and the date their primary tenancy will begin.
