Rogers to Launch New Infinite Wireless Plans with Unlimited Data

Unlimited data is finally coming to Rogers, as the Canadian carrier has announced new Infinite wireless plans that will include unlimited data usage and no overage fees.

Scheduled to launch Thursday, June 13, Rogers isn’t the first carrier to offer an unlimited wireless plan in Canada, but it does mark the first time one of the Big Three (Bell, Rogers and TELUS) has offered unlimited data at a consumer level.

At launch, there will be three Infinite Plans available, as per the Rogers website .

• Infinite +10 - $75.00 per month with 10GB of max speed data
• Infinite +20 - $95.00 per month with 20GB of max speed data
• Infinite +50 - $125.00 per month with 50GB of max speed data

All three plans include unlimited data usage and no overage fees, but there is a catch -- the plans are capped with what Rogers calls “max speed” data limits. You’ll get full LTE network speeds up to a certain threshold (10GB, 20GB or 50GB, depending on the plan), but speeds will be throttled after reaching those bandwidth limits.

Download and upload speeds will be reduced to 256 kilobits per second after reaching the limits, meaning data-intensive tasks like media streaming will be virtually unusable and you’ll be limited to tasks like basic web-browsing. Rogers will warn customers via text once they reach 90% of their max speed limit and provide the option to purchase a Speed Pass for $15.00, which adds an extra 3GB of high speed usage.

According to a 2018 CRTC report , mobile customers with a data plan average less than 2GB of mobile data usage per month, so the bandwidth cap shouldn’t be an issue for most Canadians, but some heavy data users may be disappointed that speeds aren’t truly unlimited.

Infinite plans are available on BYOD (bring your own device) and subsidy tiers (Ultra, Premium +, Premium). Rogers notes that financing options will be made available this summer so customers can opt to purchase a device starting at $0.00 alongside an Infinite Plan.

Despite the bandwidth limits, this announcement is encouraging for the wireless landscape in Canada, as unlimited data is a long overdue option that has been available for well over a decade in the United States and overseas. Hopefully, this also means that unlimited data will soon be available on Rogers' competing carriers and eventually trickle-down to budget-friendly subsidiaries like Fido.

I don't know if it's a local offer or if it's expired, but I was offered a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7" for free. Literally. Not even the $10 or $15 monthly "line access fee", for 24 months (I declined because I already have a tablet). I'm in Quebec, by the way.

Indeed. When I called Rogers if I can migrate from my Share Everything plan to Inifinite with 30% corporate discount, they said they don't do that yet. Cancelled my plan with them and went with Fizz for 30 bucks less overall monthly payment.

• Has anyone had Rogers wave the $10 a month hotspot/tablet fee if one wanted to migrate from an existing non share plan to the share infinite plan with a hotspot? Currently $70 per month for 10 + 3Gb bonus. Would go share infinite for $75 per month if monthly hotspot fee waved. Thanks called but frontline person just useless reading from a script.

Hi! The 30% corporate discount doesn’t apply to this plan. It’s also a BYOD price.

I somewhat agree to the extent that it would be irresponsible for carriers to offer unlimited plans without any plan for managing the increase in traffic. The flip side is that data is data. 60gb of Netflix on your phone will have the same impact on a network as 60gb of Netflix over a hotspot.

• My predicament is that my cell phone pulls in a 3G signal most of the time in my home. However with a hotspot it pulls in a strong LTE 35/10 down/up. So if my phone connects to the hotspot via wifi it is always boom boom boom - no waving the phone looking for a stronger signal. I budget my 13gb each month so the need for a hotspot is not to abuse the system, just to have an instantaneous stable internet connection. Just being a RFDer I hate to pay $10 a month if I don’t have to.

This is a good thing. People ruin it for the rest of us who just want unlimited data for their phones. People trying to run their entire home network off a hotspot, burning through 100s of GB of data, are a bunch of clowns.

• Best deal right now is the Business infinite, additional lines get $25 off per line and $200 activation credit + 200 port in for new customers. Talk to MarkT60418 he helped my buddy out with 3 lines. So he's paying 95 for first line, 70 for the other two, and 3 free iphone xr PLUS additional 400 credit per line lol It's also shared, 30gb unlimited (so after 30gb it slows down to 512kbps or whatever). Now that Koodo changed their terms for new purchases, these types of deals are probably the best for most that need a new phone. You can just keep changing carriers every 2yrs since they usually offer the best deals to new activations.

Hurry into Rogers if that is what you think will work. With Infinite plans you can get a free tablet line that simply shares the data on the main line, including the unl throttled. They also waive the activation fee. But I think that promo ends today.

Update on the throttled Telus tablet plan. And also the hotspot blocking discussion that occurred earlier in the thread. Firstly, the Telus tablet Peace Of Mind 5gb plan (throttled to 512kb after 5gb) does not work on a rocket hub. I was able to get signal to the hub and set up apn settings, but Telus only whitelists tablets on their end, for this plan. Secondly, hotspot blocking appears to be a real thing. It says “hotspot blocked” explicitly on the contract, and they appear to have the ability to do so. I spent some time on the phone with tech support, who was helpful, but ultimately concluded this plan would not work with a rocket hub. I guess now, I will be stopping in to Rogers and going with the 10gb infinite.

That’s a pretty good deal. I have a ZTE MF275r, bought from Rogers originally. I am considering trying out the unlimited tablet plan you mentioned for our home internet. $30 for home internet, I suspect it would be way more consistent than xplornet, I could probably tolerate 512kb until something new comes along. Curious if the Telus sim on “tablet plan” will work in the Rogers hub. I feel like technically it should, I may need to call Rogers to get the hub unlocked first.

Yes - I am on the 10GB Infinite plan. I put the sim into a RocketHub. I told the sales rep I was going to do this and he said fine, lots have done this and he has received no complaints back. We live in rural Ont and for some, we are testing this out as home internet. The only other option we have is xPlornet and it's not great and more expensive. For my test, 7 days in, sharing is fine, we are well over 40GB so far. If 512kbps is OK for you, I would check out Telus new tablet plan. $30/month you get a data only plan, 5GB LTE and unlimited at 512kbps afterwards. At this price you can just test it yourself and cancel if it does not suit your needs.

I want to take the 10go plan of rogers, but I have a question: someone who took this plan in Quebec , can he confirm us if the hotspot function (to share wifi with our computer, by example) remains functional after the 10 go issue ? ... I know that Bell does not allow sharing at all, and that Telus blocks it after 10 go ... What about Rogers, someone tried? ... • Everyone happy with their new wireless plans, seems as soon as we add more data to our lives we end up using it all up just as fast! I changed mid month (5 phones, 10Gb each line) as two lines are for older people and use almost no data, allowing the other three phones to share the total allotment. Going to see how that goes for a few months and after that can change 1 plan to a higher level if needed, seeing all the data is also shared. Put one phone with US/CAN roaming at $20, unbelievable deal in my opinion if you have a family member who goes to college south of the border or you spend a fair amount of time down there. Do wish there was a site to understand what 512 KBPS equates to in real life experience. Don't want to download a gadzillion files to test the theory, has to be a simpler way.
