Why do this?

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Start with a friendly greeting

To kick your cover letter off, start with a friendly greeting to build rapport with the recruiter instantly.

Your greeting should be personable but professional. Not too casual, but not too formal either

Go with something like…

• Hi [insert recruiter name]
• Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid old-fashioned greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very formal companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

• Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
• Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you have opened the cover letter with a warm greeting, you need to explain which role you are interested in.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant could be managing over 10 vacancies, so it’s crucial to pinpoint exactly which one you are interested in.

Highlight the department/area if possible and look for any reference numbers you can quote.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

My letterhead doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to exist!

Dear Specific Person Whose Name I Obtained, Showing I Have Reporting Skills,*

I am starting this cover letter with literally ANYTHING other than “I am applying for [job].” Also I’m not telling you how I found the job listing, unless someone influential told me to apply. Yes, I am defying the advice of my career center, professor and/or friend who is applying to law/automotive/sales jobs. And my name’s in the letterhead so I don’t need to mention it again.

Instead, I will use my first 100 words or less to tell you something interesting — yet relevant to the job — that will make you want to talk to me. Because that’s what this is all about: Scoring an interview so I can dazzle you! Maybe that thing will not be how I reported on a Sad Person and learned a Valuable Lesson About Journalism, though, because everyone is doing that and also this isn’t a college admissions essay.

Now, instead of listing ALL my awesome experiences and achievements, since they are already on my resume, I will look at the job requirements and curate accordingly. I will make clear how my experiences/achievements prepare me for this particular job , which I researched extensively to see what, exactly, it is! Because I’m definitely not applying for all 20 openings at your organization. Or maybe I am (Wait, you can see that in your recruitment software?!), but THIS is the job I REALLY want. And it’s not because I’m PERFECT for the position (pobody’s nerfect! haha) or a great fit (because what am I, jeans?).

Next I’ll tell you what I can do for your organization besides work hard and utilize my strong track record in communication skills and high proficiency with Microsoft Word! I will skip the part about how this will advance my goals, which are to grow in my career, master new skills and have health insurance. Rather, I’ll tell you how I will advance your goals.

I will not make this paragraph about how I love [station/show/podcast] because I grew up listening to it in the backseat of my parents’ car, nor will I remind you that your organization is an esteemed news outlet with high standards that serves the public. I will give examples of work you do that I liked (and why), preferably at least two. Oh yeah, and I def won’t tell you how much I love a podcast your competitor produces. (That would be silly, I say as I delete a reference to The Daily .) Nor will I confuse Idaho Matters and Talk of Iowa . Thank goodness I always ask someone to proofread my letters and they caught that embarrassing mistake!

After reviewing your job description, it’s clear that you’re looking for a candidate that is extremely familiar with the responsibilities associated with this role, and can perform them confidently. Given these requirements, I am certain that I have the necessary skills to successfully do the job adeptly and perform above expectations. What? I’d never cut and paste a paragraph I found in a random template ! You must have me confused with 40% of your applicant pool.

Finally, I will not use words more suited for accepting a marriage proposal to express my excitement about this job! Yes I would love it, be honored to have it and be passionate about every aspect of it! But I will use normal words. And, because I am not a free online career personality test, my ability to craft phrases like “successfully utilize my core competencies and soft skills in the workspace” will remain implied. In conclusion, I bet you’re aware I’m available for an interview at your convenience. Thank you for your consideration.

How to make all-purpose letterhead

• Choose a sans-serif font with a heavy bold face. Proxima Nova is safe enough .
• Type your name. Make it between 25 and 30 points.
• Now choose a thinner version of your font.
• Type your email address, phone number and website URL. Separate them with this character: |
• Optionally, include your street address (but why?) and non-embarrassing social accounts.
• Make this stuff between 10 and 12 points.

Money should not be enough to wipe out town history

“I’m a big fan of Glenwood Springs.” That is what Tony Sherman said in an interview about the purchase of the Hotel Denver. To prove this he decided to deface a building historic to Glenwood Springs and put his kids’ names on it. Simply millionaire graffiti. A slap in the face of Glenwood Springs. Town history means nothing when compared to showing off how much money you have? All I can do is speak with my wallet. No longer will I visit the Brewpub for lunch. No longer will I point tourists there. And I will speak negatively of this establishment whenever the opportunity presents itself. This will no doubt bring them to their financial knees.

Did anyone on the City Council question this? Not that I could find. P&Z approved variance November 13, 2023.

Just another “sign” of how little those overbuilding Glenwood really care about Glenwood.

Unfair comparison should not take away from Caitlin Clark’s accomplishment

You have received a number of letters criticizing Mike Vidakovich’s recent “That Girl From Iowa” column. I’d like to touch on the bigger picture regarding his dismissive stance toward Caitlin Clark’s commendable achievement. Some of us are old enough to remember when, in 1961, Roger Maris hit 61 homers, surpassing Babe Ruth’s single-season total of 60, and how that feat was qualified (with an infamous asterisk) because it took Maris eight more games than Ruth to do it.

Farther afield, Japanese baseball legend Sadaharu Oh (whom possibly few folks around here have heard of) hit a world professional baseball total of 868 home runs while playing for the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants in 1959-80 — that was 113 more than Hank Aaron and 104 more than Barry Bonds hit in their careers. Yet, who over here even knows of it? While in Japan in 1976, I actually saw (on TV) him hit number 715, surpassing Ruth — it was pretty exciting. All of Oh’s remarkable feats are generally dismissed in the states because Japanese pitchers aren’t considered as good as our major leaguers (hear that, Shohei Ohtani?), and Japanese ballparks generally are smaller. While there is some truth to those points, they should not take away anything from what Oh accomplished; he should be recognized on his own merits as a world-class ball player. (Oh, and Aaron once had a home-run contest, by the way, and Aaron won it by one, 10 to 9).

Vidakovich’s mean-spirited assessment of Clark against Pete Maravich ranks with these two baseball examples, in my book. Rather than celebrate her superlative sports achievement on its merits, he chose to denigrate it based on what I think is an unfair comparison. If Pete were alive today, I’m sure he would have sung Clark’s praises for what she has accomplished.

It was okay for the county commissioners to appoint the new library board member

Our commissioners are wise, thoughtful, decent, law-abiding men. They have an attorney on hand to consult with, so yes, their decision to handle the appointment of a new library board member was responsible and legal. It is false information that the commissioners have taken over the library selection of new board members. It has always been a part of their jobs. We all have to realize the board has been allowed to run amuk in the past few years. Does the library have lots of programs? Yes, is that the purpose of the library? Is the library a community center, or a library? The new board member should represent a cross section of our county, and in particular, Rifle.

The library board has been a closed loop choosing only those in lock step with their administrator; not the broad beliefs of our great county. Did you know that nowhere can you purchase obscene materials in our wonderful county? Sure, you can get it on the internet. It is wrong to sexualize our children!

The library could have solved this issue easily if they had only moved the materials off the floor shelf and away from small hands when John Lipkowski had requested it. We have a very stiff-necked administrator over the library who refuses to hear the taxpayer. He disregarded our 1,400-person petition as well as multiple requests of reconsideration of materials. By the way, only one person requested these obscene pornographic items. It is so wrong to sexualize our youth!

I also used to love the library. I voted for the mill levy increase. I now regret my decision and avoid going there.

We need new blood on the library board, to balance and represent where our library is heading.

The people who request that these obscene pornographic materials be put under glass with an age restriction on them have never mentioned banning books. So my parting statement to the March 25 misinformation and hyperbole: It is wrong to sexualize children!

Medicare plans can now cover Wegovy for patients at risk of heart disease

For the first time, Medicare will allow coverage of one of the new blockbuster weight-loss drugs for enrollees in Part D plans.

The plans may now cover Wegovy when prescribed to prevent heart attacks and strokes, according to a new policy issued this week from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Wegovy is a GLP-1 agonist, a class of obesity drugs promising a sea change in weight loss. They act on hormones and the brain to drastically reduce appetite, among other things.

But Medicare is prohibited from paying for weight-loss treatments so seniors have had to pay out of pocket for the drugs or use supplemental insurance. In early March, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Wegovy to say the drug can be used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in people with cardiovascular disease and either overweight or obesity.

In clinical trials, Wegovy was found to reduce risks of cardiovascular events by 20% in higher weight patients.

That finding prompted CMS to change its Medicare Part D drug program to cover Wegovy, although it noted that this applies only for those patients struggling with both weight and heart disease. In other words, the injections, which can cost well over $1,000 a month out of pocket, will not be covered for enrollees only seeking to lose weight.

The new guidance also applies to state Medicaid plans, which also would be required to cover Wegovy for patients with both higher weight and heart disease risk.

Obesity doctor Angela Fitch says that the move to cover it even for a limited subset of patients is still significant. She's president of the Obesity Medicine Association, a group that advocates for treatment.

"It's certainly a big step forward, compared to no coverage at all," she says. "At least now we'll have coverage for those people who have a known history of heart disease," she says. "So hopefully that will trickle down into covering it for everybody with overweight and obesity."

And, Fitch notes, Medicare sets the standard for coverage in insurance generally, so this move could ultimately affect more patients. "My hope would be that commercial insurance would follow."

In a statement, a CMS spokesperson said: "CMS is committed to ensuring that people have access to treatments and treatment options that improve health outcomes."

The Medicare guidance could also expand the use of other similar medicines. It states that anti-obesity medications that receive FDA approval for an additional condition other than weight-management alone, can be considered a Part D drug for that specific use. For example, if one of the drugs receives FDA approval to treat diabetes or prevent cardiovascular disease, Medicare part D plans may cover it for that use.

However CMS specified they may also require prior authorizations to ensure that is being used only for the approved use.

In a statement, Wegovy's maker Novo Nordisk said it was "encouraged" by the new guidance from CMS but said it hopes to see Part D coverage expanded for "obesity medicines when used for chronic weight management."

The drug maker is among those pushing for Congress to expand coverage of treatments for obesity.

One year ago on Friday, Ella Milman and Mikhail Gershkovich received a chilling phone call from the managing editor of The Wall Street Journal. Their son, Evan, a foreign correspondent for The Journal who was on a reporting assignment in Russia, had missed his daily security check-in.

“We were hoping this was some kind of error, that everything is going to be fine,” the older Mr. Gershkovich recalled. But the stunning reality became clear: The Russian authorities had detained Evan and accused him of spying for the American government, making him the first American reporter to be held on espionage charges in Russia since the end of the Cold War.

Since his arrest, Mr. Gershkovich, 32, has been held in the notorious high-security Lefortovo prison in Moscow, the same facility holding the people accused in the deadly attack at a concert venue in the city this month. The Journal and the U.S. government have vehemently denied that Mr. Gershkovich is a spy, saying he was an accredited journalist doing his job.

On Tuesday, Mr. Gershkovich’s detention was extended for yet another three months. A trial date has not been set.

“Every day is very hard — every day we feel that he is not here,” Ms. Milman said. “We want him at home, and it has been a year. It’s taken a toll.”

President Biden said on Friday that he wasn’t giving up on bringing Mr. Gershkovich home.

“I admire the hell out of him,” Mr. Biden said.

Roger Carstens, the Biden administration’s special envoy for hostage affairs, said the U.S. government had “intensive efforts” underway to secure Mr. Gershkovich’s release, as well as the release of another detained American, Paul Whelan, a Marine veteran who is also accused of espionage.

“Journalism is not a crime,” Mr. Carstens said in a statement. “Evan Gershkovich was doing his job and should not have been detained by Russia.”

Recent public comments from President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia about a possible prisoner swap could be a reason for some optimism, said Jay Conti, general counsel at Dow Jones, the parent company of The Journal.

In an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson last month, Mr. Putin suggested that he wanted to trade Mr. Gershkovich for Vadim Krasikov, a Russian citizen imprisoned in Germany for assassinating a target in a Berlin park.

Early talks between American and German officials explored whether Berlin would be willing to let the assassin go if Russia released the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny in addition to Mr. Gershkovich and Mr. Whelan. But Mr. Navalny died in mysterious circumstances in an Arctic prison last month, derailing that possibility.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that there aren’t a ton of high-profile Russians in U.S. custody, and so therefore it makes any potential deal that much more complicated,” Mr. Conti said. “I do think the U.S. government has been active in their efforts to try and bring Evan home, but it obviously takes a willing partner and takes putting a deal together in order to do that.”

While in prison, Mr. Gershkovich plays a slow-running game of chess with his father through the mail, and works his way through book recommendations from friends, his parents said. He also keeps track of people’s birthdays and milestone events, organizing through others for flowers to be sent, including to his mother and sister on International Women’s Day this month.

“It’s a very small, very isolated place with a small window and very little time outside,” his father said about his son’s cell. “We know it takes a lot of courage and effort and strength to stay put together, to exercise, to meditate, to read books, to write letters, to encourage us to stay strong and hope for the best.”

Mr. Gershkovich exchanges letters weekly with his family, as well as friends and pen pals around the world. A group of his friends set up a website where people can submit letters, which will be translated into Russian, as required by law, and sent to Mr. Gershkovich, who relishes receiving them, his mother said.

“He’s fighting. He’s keeping his spirits up,” Ms. Milman said.

Mr. Gershkovich grew up in Princeton, N.J., the son of Jewish émigrés who had fled the Soviet Union in the 1970s. His parents said he was curious about his Russian heritage from a young age and spoke Russian at home. He also had an interest in people, and went on to study philosophy and English at Bowdoin College in Maine, graduating in 2014. Journalism seemed a perfect fit.

After nearly two years as a news assistant at The New York Times, Mr. Gershkovich moved to Russia in late 2017 to work as a reporter for The Moscow Times. He had a stint with Agence France-Presse before joining The Journal in January 2022, a job his parents said he loved.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Mr. Gershkovich left Moscow, along with most foreign journalists, and relocated to London. But he frequently returned to Russia on reporting trips.

The Wall Street Journal has worked hard to keep Mr. Gershkovich’s plight in the headlines, said Emma Tucker, the editor in chief. The newsroom displays a large photo of him, and colleagues wear “Free Evan” pins. The Journal’s homepage features updates about Mr. Gershkovich’s case, and the company has organized letter-writing campaigns, social media storms and even a 24-hour readathon of Mr. Gershkovich’s reporting.

On Friday, The Journal’s print edition was wrapped in a special section, with a stark, blank page instead of a lead article under Mr. Gershkovich’s byline. The headline: “His Story Should Be Here.”

“We have to keep up the pressure,” Ms. Tucker said. “We refuse to let up.”

His arrest marked a particularly chilling moment in Mr. Putin’s clampdown on independent media and dissent. While hundreds of independent Russian journalists had been run out of the country, Mr. Putin until then hadn’t jailed any Western journalists on charges that would land them in prison.

The Russian authorities arrested Mr. Whelan in 2018, accusing him of espionage in charges that he and the U.S. government deny. In early 2022, the Russian authorities arrested the basketball player Brittney Griner, accusing her of drug smuggling. They later swapped her for a convicted arms trafficker, Viktor Bout, whose repatriation from an American prison they had been pursuing for years.

Ms. Griner’s release at the end of 2022 and the imbalance of the swap — a basketball player caught with some hashish oil for an arms trafficker — raised concerns that Mr. Putin would target other Americans, realizing they could be used as leverage to secure high-profile, dangerous Russians caught in the West.

Mr. Gershkovich’s arrest followed a few months later. It has had wide implications for coverage of Russia, as many major newsrooms pulled their journalists out of the country and reassessed the risk of any reporting in the region. Another journalist, Alsu Kurmasheva, an American-Russian national working for the U.S.-funded broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, was detained in October when she traveled to Russia to visit her mother. She was charged with failing to register as a foreign agent and remains in detention.

Gulnoza Said, the Europe and Central Asia program coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists, said in an interview that journalists in Russia now knew they were “under constant risk.”

“Before Evan’s case, foreign correspondents who may have been perceived as too critical of the Russian policies were denied extension of their visa or accreditation,” Ms. Said explained. “It became clear that the Russian authorities won’t stop at anything in their suppression of independent media.”

Mr. Gershkovich’s parents said they had poured their time into keeping the Biden administration focused on him, meeting with Mr. Biden, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Jake Sullivan, Mr. Biden’s national security adviser. They traveled to Davos, Switzerland, this year for the World Economic Forum, and were guests at Mr. Biden’s State of the Union address on March 7, when the president said the United States was working “around the clock” to bring Mr. Gershkovich home.

“We know that they’re engaged and President Biden is committed, but we’d like to see a resolution as soon as possible,” Ms. Milman said.

A trial date is expected to be set for Mr. Gershkovich in the coming months, said Mr. Conti, the general counsel at Dow Jones. A trial would be held behind closed doors, with little transparency in the process.

Until then, Mr. Gershkovich’s parents said, they continue to hope for his release.

“We have to be optimistic to keep going,” his father said. “We have no other skills to cope with this.”

Hundreds Of Jews In Hollywood Denounce Jonathan Glazer's Oscars Speech In Letter

Jewish actors and other entertainment figures slammed director Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech in a letter that has gathered hundreds of signatures .

“We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination,” said the letter, which responded specifically to Glazer’s remarks after his movie, “Zone of Interest” won the Oscar for best international film on March 10.

Signees include actors Debra Messing, Julianna Margulies, Michael Rapaport, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Tovah Feldshuh; directors Eli Roth and Rod Lurie; and producers Lawrence Bender, Amy Pascal and Sherry Lansing.

Glazer, who is Jewish, made a movie that imagined the family life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss next door to the death camp. In his victory speech Glazer drew parallels to Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza after it was attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7.

“Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,” Glazer said. “Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?”

Glazer was one of the few award winners to comment on the war in Gaza, which has reportedly killed tens of thousands of people while dividing opinion on the role the U.S. should play in the conflict.

The letter condemned Glazer’s terminology.

“The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history,” the message read. “It gives credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.”

“ The current climate of growing antisemitism only underscores the need for the Jewish State of Israel, a place which will always take us in, as no state did during the Holocaust depicted in Mr. Glazer’s film,” the letter continued.
