Even though Bangladesh is not a drug producing country, but in terms of geographical location, it is juxtaposed between the golden and crescent triangle and the crescent ways pass through it. As a result, the problem of drug abuse has taken an epidemic form that destroys the productive forces of the country creating special imbalances through narco-terrorism and handicaps the development process. The drug scenario in Bangladesh nonetheless, has changed with time with marijuana and alcohol in place and drugs like heroin, phensedyl and yaba replacing opium. This conjuncture has spread from cities to villages, from high societies to middle/low classes. At the moment, there are more than 6 million people in Bangladesh engaged in illegal drug abuse with the most of them being between the ages 18-30. However, public and non-public governance are concerned about the magnitude of drug addiction and the devastating consequences to this crisis and have been institutionally responding to the problem. In line with international obligation, Government of Bangladesh has promulgated the Narcotics Control Act 1990 that imposes often rigorous imprisonment upon the drug abusers/dealers. Additionally, the government of Bangladesh is inclined with executing stringent provisions of penal sanction such as death penalty and deadly anti-drug operation by security forces. It has been witnessed that implementing strict law and extrajudicial killings of drug abusers, Bangladesh has not achieved highest success in drug demand reduction. Moreover the issue of public health in addressing drug addiction is entirely missing in context of Bangladesh and thus getting rid of drug problems is a myth for the addicts. Though low scale of governmental and the non-governmental rehabilitation centres having provided medical and psychological supports are overburdened with patients and charge high amount of money in comparison with the service they provide from the service seekers. However family including other social intuitions are as actors ignored in prevention management of drug abuse in Bangladesh and there is no full-fledged prevention program of substance abuse connecting the social institutions. Against this background, the paper through synthesizing available literature shall investigate the loopholes of current legal framework and question ineffective responses of the prevailing enactments in Bangladesh. This paper shall also suggest a holistic response required to combat drug abuse in the country.

The escalating issue of drug addiction among street children in urban Bangladesh, mirroring challenges in other developing nations, is a pressing concern. Despite the significant population of drug-addicted street children in Dhaka, effective strategies to address this issue are notably lacking. This inquiry aims to understand the root causes propelling street children toward drug addiction and the socioeconomic factors contributing to their vulnerability. Utilizing a qualitative framework, the study collects empirical data through interviews and supplements it with a comprehensive review of UN publications, governmental documents, reports, and journal articles. Findings suggest that around 50 percent of Dhaka's street children are affected by drug addiction due to familial detachment. The study examines various stakeholders' roles, uncovering disparities between perceptions and realities faced by street-dwelling youths. It concludes that combatting drug addiction among these children requires a holistic understanding of multifaceted challenges, extending beyond economic factors to include fractured family structures and inadequate parenting. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies to address the intricate social fabric contributing to drug addiction among street children.

The focus of this research was on identifying the factors that lead the street children to drug addiction. A survey of 120 street children's from Khulna city (a Southwestern urban area of Bangladesh) was used in this study. Alongside descriptive statistics, chi-square test and binary logistic regression were used to determine the factors that affecting street children's drug addiction. More than two-third of the sample were male and aged between 12 to17. The prevalence of severe level drug addiction among street children was 59.2%. Sex, family pattern, parental condition, parental unconsciousness, peer pressure, quick drug access were the significant determinants for developing street children's drug addiction. Drug addiction among street children in Bangladesh is present, and strategies are needed to reduce the street children's drug addiction.

A large number of the street children in Dhaka city are addicted to drugs. Various socioeconomic factors contribute to drug usage among street children. Drug abuse directly influences the physical and socio-behaviourial problem of children and affects the economic and social aspects of a society as well as a country. This paper examines whether there is any relation between social bonding and drug addiction. The role of the state and society are also analyzed. In this paper primary data are collected by interview with a semi-structured questionnaire. Secondary sources are UN publications, Government documents and reports, review of newspaper reports as well as related books and journal articles. This paper progresses with content analysis through contemporary literature review analysis and finally conclusion. Role of social bonding in controlling of drug abuse and reason of drug addiction are also discussed here in the light of interview. This paper also argues that about 53 percent street children of Dhaka city are addicted to drugs as they are separated from family and social bondage. This asserts that, the children separated from social bondage are vulnerable to drug addiction than the children who are in social bondage.

Drug addiction is becoming a social problem in Bangladesh. It creates many social offences. Consequently, the youth-the future of the nation-are running into the depth of darkness. This study tries to discover the causes of drug addiction in the urban life of Bangladesh. To conduct this study, analytical research design, social survey method & stratified random sampling have been followed. To measure the causes of drug addiction, the Likert Scaling five rating scale has been applied. Further, for hypotheses testing, an ᵡ 2-test has been used to test the degree to which two or more groups vary or differ in an experiment. The present findings suggest that the majority (67.67 %) of drug addicts think that drug addiction is high/very high, simultaneously 9.10% medium and 23.23% low/very low due to the influence of frustration, addicted parents and peer group in society. Again, the result of hypotheses testing suggests that a man can become addicted to drugs by the influence of frustration and peer group not influenced by the parental drug addiction. Therefore, these findings may help the policy makers and planners of the government and non-government organizations to take appropriate initiatives to prevent drug addiction in society.

Drug addiction is turning to the national problem from social problem. It creates many other problem. This study conducted to identify the core cause of drug addiction of young generation in Bangladesh. To conduct this research, questionnaire survey and case study have conducted. Case study tried to bring out the core factor responsible for the drug addiction of young generation and questionnaire survey expressed the people’s perception toward drug addiction. This research findings suggest that influence of peer group, weak family bonding, affluence and shortage of money are the key responsible factor for the drug addiction of young generation in Bangladesh.
