Speech on World Environment Day for Students and Children

Short speech on world environment day.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 globally. It is a day on which we spread awareness about the environment and the need to conserve it. Moreover, it is essential to advocate for a greener environment and conservation of nature. It is quite simple as when we conserve the environment today, the future generations will be able to lead a healthier life. We cannot be so selfish and use up all the resources for ourselves. World Environment Day is the perfect opportunity to make people aware of the issues we are facing and how one can contribute to saving it. Thus, it is quite important in its own way.

Importance of World Environment Day

World Environment Day reminds us to strengthen the world and ensure that nature is preserved at all costs. It throws light on the causes which are causing serious harm to our environment. For instance, industries and factories are contributing largely to pollution. They are deteriorating the quality of air that we breathe and the water we consume.

Thus, this day serves as an eye-opener for many citizens who aren’t aware of all this. In other words, it spreads awareness amongst the common people which the environment is facing right now. Moreover, it also encourages the public from different societies and communities to take active participation in celebrating the day.

Further, it also urges them to become active agents in developing environmental safety methods. Not just that, it also encourages everyone to keep their nearby surroundings safe and clean so that everyone can have a cleaner, greener and more prosperous future.

Every Little Deed Matters

On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. No matter how small a step you are taking to lead a greener lifestyle, it does make a difference. Because, if everyone starts doing little deeds one by one, it will turn into something big. As the saying goes every drop makes an ocean, it is true in this case as well.

As there are a lot of diseases that originate due to unhygienic living conditions and dirty water, we must begin there. For instance, when water remains stagnant or unclean for long, various insects and bacteria start growing there. This results in deadly diseases like Malaria, Dengue and more. So, we must make sure to cover the tanks, pots, coolers and more which may become a breeding ground for such insects and diseases.

Similarly, we have to talk about the issues of garbage disposal. Especially in our country, people litter around everywhere. It is essential to firstly dispose of waste properly and also segregate the wet and dry waste accordingly.

These little deeds will make you realize how wholesome your life will become. It is not always about the money and luxury, the little fulfilling things and change in habits can also prove to be very effective.

Thus, we have the World Environment Day which serves as a reminder to protect the environment at all costs. All the resources of nature from forests to oceans and soil to air, we must conserve.

To sum it up, always remember that the gifts and blessings which nature endows on us are priceless. It is rather essential to conserve them all for a better future and life for all. Always remember that small steps will help you reach your goal.

FAQ on World Environment Day

History behind world environment day.

The UN Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day(WED) in 1972. It was done to create an awareness of the kind of environment we are living in and the need to conserve and preserve it for the present and the future. ‘Only One Earth’ was the slogan for the first celebration of the World Environment Day in 1974, and from then on, the commemoration of the World Environment Day has become a platform to create consciousness on the environmental issues we are facing on a global scale. It also turned out to be a chance for everyone to rethink the ways in which they are exploiting the environment we are a part of.

Environment Day through the Ages

Down the years, the WED has become a pathway to the restoration of the ecosystem which includes the recovery of destroyed ecosystems and preserving the ecosystems that are still in shape. Every year, the WED is hosted by a different country and has a different theme. In the year 2020, the WED was hosted by Columbia and Germany under the theme, ‘Time for Nature’.

Pakistan will be the global host country this year (2021), and the theme is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore’ and aims at Ecosystem Restoration.

Environment Day Speech in English

Here are a few speeches you can refer to in order to help prepare yours.

Speech about Environment Day in 300 Words

As human beings, the environment we exist in plays a very important role in the well-being of every life possible on this Earth, and it is our duty to preserve and keep everything in check. Throughout the years, there have been many movements and awareness campaigns around the world that have been put forth to make people environmentally conscious. Chipko Movement, dated way back to 1970, carried out by rural villagers, particularly women, was directed towards stopping the government from cutting down trees and demolishing forests for various reasons. Van Mahotsav is yet another initiative, an annual tree-planting festival that goes on for a week in the month of July, which was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food. There were also many others like the Save Silent Valley Movement, the Jungle Bachao Andholan, Tehri Dam Movement and so on.

We, at our school, have been following the same path for the past few years. It is necessary that all of us, as inhabitants of this planet, understand the need to be aware of our surroundings and find ways to protect it in every possible way. It is not just enough for us to be aware but also let the others know that we owe a great deal of respect and concern for all that the Earth we live in is providing us with. So here we are today to hold hands in making every little difference we can, together. Let us stand together and make this world a wonderful place, not just for us but for the future generations as well. To ‘Only One Earth’ and giving more ‘Time for Nature’.

Short Speech on World Environment Day

“One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken,” said Leo Tolstoy. The relationship between human beings and the environment is important and it is necessary that they understand and work to keep it strong.

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5 th of June every year. It is celebrated to raise awareness and to take actions to conserve the environment. It was initiated in 1972 by the UN Assembly and has come a long way since. The concern for preserving the environment did not just start then. People have been taking initiatives to do whatever is possible on their own, to make life better for everyone by creating awareness about preserving nature. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” and that is exactly what all of us are here to do today. Let us join together and do our part in making our environment and our life on this planet as wondrous as it should be.

One Minute Speech on Environment Day

Nature has been painting for us infinite pictures of beauty every day, according to John Ruskin. It is just that people fail to see what nature has to offer. It is for this reason that we have occasions like the World Environment Day to remind us of what we are missing out. Planting a sapling, holding placards, shouting slogans, going on a rally – all of this is definitely something but not everything. We should be a lot more conscious of the kind of environment we are a part of and try to make it sustainable. In order to do that, it is not enough to do all of this just for a day, but make it our lifestyle. Join in, let us work together to make some real change.

Why is Environment Day celebrated?

Environment Day is celebrated every year to create awareness on problems faced by the environment due to air pollution, global warming, deforestation, wild forest fires and so on. It also helps us make a check on the kind of life we are all living that harms and destroys nature.

Why is 5th June celebrated as World Environment Day?

The UN General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day for the first time in 1972, and since then, every year, June 5 is commemorated as World Environment Day all around the world.

What is the theme for Environment Day?

The theme for Environment Day changes every year. ‘Only One Earth’ was the theme in 1974 when it was first celebrated. It was ‘Time for Nature’ in 2020 and ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ is the theme for 2021.

2-Minute Speech on World Environment Day

Good morning teachers and my dear friends. Today, I stand before you to present my World Environment Day speech. World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. Our environment is our home, and it is our responsibility to safeguard its health from every challenge standing against it.

Today, we hear news like the loss of biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest, the rise in global temperature, water pollution, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches, climate change, etc. All of these challenges are the result of our careless and selfish attitude towards the environment. This planet is sustaining on a limited amount of resources and degrading and

In 2022, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The 1972 Stockholm Convention was the first major environmental summit, which was named the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. All the participating countries were encouraged to work to meet environmental challenges in all spheres of life. A total of 26 principle issues were put on the table.

After this, several environmental summits were conducted to raise awareness about global environmental conservation and how to meet sustainable development goals. Some of them were the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, the Kyoto Protocol of 1992, the Paris Peace Agreement in 2015, etc.

The objectives of World Environment Day address every issue related to our environmental concerns.

  • Environment Day aims to increase public awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
  • Encourages everyone to take sustainable steps towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
  • It encourages collaboration among countries, organizations, and individuals to work together for the common goal of environmental sustainability.
  • The day aims to empower individuals and communities to become active agents of sustainable change.

To fulfill all the objectives of World Environment Day, collective and sustainable efforts are necessary for all spheres of society. World Environment Day not only raises awareness about global environmental concerns but also reminds us of our duty to protect nature from every potential threat.

Thank you.’

Season’s greetings to all of our followers, colleagues and friends. Thank you for being on this shared journey to take action on the triple planetary crisis all year long.  #HappyHolidays pic.twitter.com/jbDoizXj6I — UN Environment Programme (@UNEP) December 24, 2023

World Environment Day

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

"As 2021 marks the beginning of United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, led jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and with which UNESCO is closely associated, the formidable reservoir of experience accumulated in our biosphere reserves will now be of service to the world."

UNESCO Director-General

UNESCO's work on environmental issues

UNESCO has an important track record in advancing ecological sciences through pioneering work on ecosystems, biosphere reserves, capacity building, scientific assessments and policy briefs to assist decision-makers in managing natural resources sustainably. UNESCO mobilizes the knowledge, know-how and practices of local communities and indigenous peoples to support their inclusion in environmental decision-making. Its World Network of Biosphere Reserves demonstrate ways to safeguard natural ecosystems and biodiversity through science, education and participatory approaches while promoting innovative economic development that is environmentally sustainable and socially and culturally appropriate.

"UNESCO will be responsible for the "Humans in Nature" panel, which will expand and extend the avenues that have been explored for the past 50 years in our biosphere reserves in order to prevent the degradation of ecosystems worldwide."

Message from Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences of UNESCO

With its unique designated sites, UNESCO has been a leader in promoting in-situ solutions to the global challenges of terrestrial, coastal, and marine biodiversity loss.

UNESCO’s strategy for biodiversity is implemented in its designated sites. Over 10 million km², roughly 6% of the earth’s landmass, is already under one or more UNESCO designation, through its 1,121 World Heritage sites (including 252 natural and mixed sites and 114 cultural landscapes), its 714 Biosphere Reserves and its 161 Global Geoparks. UNESCO is also about the soft power to convene diverse interests, unite diverse cultures and emphasize shared human values. UNESCO believes that it is possible to transform mind sets to achieve sufficient momentum to bring change in this critically important  UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration .

Solutions to plastic pollution

More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled.

An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.

Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.

Discarded or burnt single-use plastic harms human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor.

With available science and solutions to tackle the problem, governments, companies and other stakeholders must scale up and speed actions to solve this crisis.

This underscores the importance of this World Environment Day in mobilizing transformative action from every corner of the world.

Cover of a practical guide for Environment Day 2022

#OnlyOneEarth Practical Guide

UNEP has published a practical guide outlining some of the collective, transformative actions that governments, cities, businesses, organizations and individuals can take to protect and restore our planet.

Fifty years celebrating World Environment Day

Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2023, it is hosted by Côte D'Ivoire.

Why take part?

Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

We need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

2020 has been referred to as a "Nature Super Year" and must be the year where we turn the tide on deforestation and forestry loss. Secretary-General's Message

Did you know?

  • Some 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into oceans. This may triple by 2040.
  • More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers.
  • A shift to a circular economy can reduce the volume of plastics entering oceans by over 80 per cent by 2040; reduce virgin plastic production by 55 per cent; save governments US$70 billion by 2040; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent; and create 700,000 additional jobs – mainly in the global south.

Plastic, a danger for climate change

Plastic is predominantly produced from oil and gas, both of which are fossil fuels. The more plastic we make, the more fossil fuel is required, the more we intensify the climate crisis. Also, plastic products create greenhouse gas emissions across their whole lifecycle. If no action is taken, greenhouse gas emissions caused by plastic could account for 19% of the Paris Agreement's total allowable emissions in 2040 to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. World Environment Day Speech

Environment Day is regarded as an auspicious day since we care about our mother earth and her beautiful surroundings on this day. Our responsibility as intelligent beings is to conserve nature and its components. The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage awareness and action to conserve our environment.

10 points about World Environment Day

Short speech on world environment day, long speech on the environment day.

World Environment Day Speech

Every year on June 5, the world observes World Environment Day.

The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1973.

The day of the Stockholm conference on the human environment was declared as Environment Day.

World Environment Day was observed two years after the designation, with the theme "only one world."

"Save the Earth, save yourselves. Think green. Be green. Stop polluting" is the slogan for Earth Day.

Different countries observe World Environment Day.

This event was held in Sweden in 2022.

This festival is held with a different theme each year.

It has been 50 years since the United Nations established June 5 as World Environment Day.

This event will be hosted in Pakistan in 2023 with the theme of Ecosystem restoration.

Good morning everyone. Today, on World Environment Day, I would like to remind us all of the importance of protecting and preserving our environment.

Mother nature is generous and giving. Mankind relied on her for a long time to meet their requirements. War, deforestation, pollution, forest fires, and so on are all examples of the suffering that our mother Earth has endured as a result of man's selfishness. The world we live in is facing numerous environmental challenges, from climate change to pollution to loss of biodiversity. It is our responsibility to take action and work towards a sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.

We can start by making small changes in our daily lives, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and using environmentally friendly products. We can also support organisations and initiatives that work towards a greener world.

It is crucial for governments, businesses, and individuals to come together and take action on environmental issues. We need to prioritise the health of our planet and invest in solutions that will have a positive impact on the environment.

Let us take this World Environment Day as an opportunity to reflect on our actions and the impact they have on the environment. Let us make a commitment to protect and preserve the world we live in.

Mother Nature has always been more of a giver than a taker. She asks for nothing more than the care of the world in exchange for an abundance of resources. Mankind desires everything for the advancement of the metropolis. But they are unaware of the devastation of resources as a result of this. Thousands of trees are taken down every day, contributing to deforestation. Plastic pollution has harmed both land and sea. Every day, marine animals perish as a result of their consumption of plastics. Factories have polluted the air, making it dangerous for birds. All of these factors exist solely because humans prioritise profit over nature. Nobody knows the environmental consequences of the current scenario.

Given the global crisis, the United Nations General Assembly recognised June 5 as World Environment Day. This day is observed to provide an opportunity for us to reconsider our decisions about our environment and its resources.

The United Nations General Assembly convened the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment in 1972. This seminar also highlighted how bad our current environmental situation is. As a result, the 5 of June was proclaimed as Environment Day in order to raise awareness about the challenges. People from various countries get together and do everything in their power to safeguard our mother Earth. The leaders of several organisations meet to discuss certain ideas to implement in our surroundings.

Environment Day through the ages

The inaugural event of World Environment was organised in 1974 in the city of Spokane in the USA with the subject of "Only one Earth". Despite the fact that the event began in the United States in 1987, the notion of hosting this day in numerous nations was implemented.

In 2010, the event was hosted by Rwanda, with the theme of—One species, One Earth. In 2011, India was the host of this event and the subject was," Forest - Nature at your service". The United Nations wants to attract national and international attention to the issue of environmental degradation and climate change. In 2013, the event was hosted in Brazil, with the subject of, " Think. Eat and Save".

What can you do?

Despite the fact that the UN established a day entirely dedicated to our environment 50 years ago, the situation persists. Population growth, air and water pollution, climate change, food and fresh water scarcity have all increased over the years and are projected to continue. It is within our power as Earthlings to assist in this subject. We must aim for the new idea of preserving resources rather than destroying them for our own purpose. Ecosystem restoration has the potential to tackle thousands of problems associated with global warming. Planting trees, cleaning up the streets, not using plastics and putting them in water bodies, not driving, and not wasting food are some of the things you can do to help sustain our environment. Our duty is never tiring when it comes to saving our mother Earth. So, let's gather together and save the Environment by all means.

UN Secretary-General's message on World Environment Day | 5 June 2022

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day, “Only One Earth”, is a simple statement of fact.

This planet is our only home.  It is vital we safeguard the health of its atmosphere, the richness and diversity of life on Earth, its ecosystems and its finite resources.  But we are failing to do so.  We are asking too much of our planet to maintain ways life that are unsustainable.  Earth’s natural systems cannot keep up with our demands.

This not only hurts the Earth, but us too.  A healthy environment is essential for all people and all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.  It provides food, clean water, medicines, climate regulation and protection from extreme weather events.  It is essential that we wisely manage nature and ensure equitable access to its services, especially for the most vulnerable people and communities.

More than 3 billion people are affected by degraded ecosystems.  Pollution is responsible for some 9 million premature deaths each year.  More than 1 million plant and animal species risk extinction, many within decades.

Close to half of humanity is already in the climate danger zone – 15 times more likely to die from climate impacts such as extreme heat, floods and drought.  There is a 50:50 chance that annual average global temperatures will breach the Paris Agreement limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next five years.  More than 200 million people each year could be displaced by climate disruption by 2050.

Fifty years ago, the world’s leaders came together at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and committed to protecting the planet.  But we are far from succeeding.  We can no longer ignore the alarm bells that ring louder every day.

The recent Stockholm+50 environment meeting reiterated that all 17 Sustainable Development Goals rely on a healthy planet.  We must all take responsibility to avert the catastrophe being wrought by the triple crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.

Governments need urgently to prioritize climate action and environmental protection through policy decisions that promote sustainable progress.  To that end, I have proposed five concrete recommendations to dramatically speed up the deployment of renewable energy everywhere, including making renewable technologies and raw materials available to all, cutting red tape, shifting subsidies and tripling investment.

Businesses need to put sustainability at the heart of their decision-making for the sake of humanity and their own bottom line.  A healthy planet is the backbone of nearly every industry on Earth.

And as voters and consumers we must make our actions count: from the policies we support, to the food we eat, to the transport we choose, to the companies we support.  We can all make environmentally friendly choices that will add up to the change we need.

Women and girls, in particular, can be forceful agents of change.  They must be empowered and included in decision-making at all levels.  Likewise, indigenous and traditional knowledge must also be respected and harnessed to help protect our fragile ecosystems.

History has shown what can be achieved when we work together and put the planet first.  In the 1980s, when scientists warned about a deadly continent-sized hole in the ozone layer, every country committed to the Montreal Protocol to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals.

In the 1990s, the Basel Convention outlawed the dumping of toxic waste in developing countries.  And, last year, a multilateral effort ended the production of leaded petrol – a move that will promote better health and prevent more than 1.2 million premature deaths each year.

This year and the next will present more opportunities for the global community to demonstrate the power of multilateralism to tackle our intertwined environmental crises, from negotiations on a new global biodiversity framework to reverse nature loss by 2030 to the establishment of a treaty to tackle plastics pollution.

The United Nations is committed to leading these cooperative global efforts, because the only way forward is to work with nature, not against it.  Together we can ensure that our planet not only survives, but thrives, because we have Only One Earth.

The Secretary-General Message on World Environment Day

This World Environment Day is a call to beat plastic pollution.

Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide – one third of which is used just once.

Every day, the equivalent of over 2000 garbage trucks full of plastic is dumped into our oceans, rivers, and lakes.

The consequences are catastrophic.

Microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.

Plastic is made from fossil fuels – the more plastic we produce, the more fossil fuel we burn, and the worse we make the climate crisis.

But we have solutions.

Last year, the global community began negotiating a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.

This is a promising first step, but we need all hands-on deck.

A new report by the UN Environment Programme shows that we can reduce plastic pollution by 80 per cent by 2040 – if we act now to reuse, recycle, reorient, and diversify away from plastics.

We must work as one – governments, companies, and consumers alike – to break our addiction to plastics, champion zero waste, and build a truly circular economy.

Together, let us shape a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.

Sixth Open-Ended Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR-6) in Nairobi, Kenya.

What is the UN Environment Assembly and why does it matter?

Every two years, all 193 UN Member States have an opportunity to collectively address critical environmental issues facing the planet. This moment is the United Nations Environment Assembly , or UNEA, the sixth edition of which will be held from 26 February to 1 March, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Set up as a sort of ‘world parliament on the environment’ , UNEA aims to define priorities for environmental policies and develop international legislation on the matter.

Why is UNEA important?

The 2024 Environment Assembly, or UNEA-6 , is expected to host a record 6,000 delegates , including seven Heads of State and 139 Ministers and Vice-Ministers, as well as experts, activists, and industry representatives.

UNEA was created in 2012, as an outcome of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Brazil. Since its establishment, the Assembly has ushered in a new era of multilateralism with environmental issues given the same level of importance as such global concerns as peace and security, and health.

Over the years, UNEA has approved important resolutions on topics such as combating illegal wildlife trafficking , protecting the environment in areas of armed conflict , sustainable urban mobility , among others.

Due to the discussions at the Environment Assembly’s 2022 session, negotiations have begun on the first legally binding international instrument to end plastic pollution, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

What’s at stake for UNEA-6?

The central theme of UNEA-6 will be multilateral environmental agreements and how they can help overcome the triple planetary crisis of climate chaos, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Despite the socio-economic uncertainties that arose in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current growing geopolitical tensions, the last two years have been marked by very important victories for environmental cooperation.

For instance, in 2022, the UN General Assembly recognized the universal human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment , opening space for constitutional and legal changes at the country levels in favor of the environment and humanity.

That same year, the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was approved, with measures to protect 1 million species of animals and plants that are on the verge of extinction.

In June 2023, the 193 UN Member countries signed the so-called High Seas Treaty , to conserve marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdictions.

Last November, a long-awaited agreement on ‘loss and damage’ financing for vulnerable countries hard-hit by climate change was announced at the UN climate conference, COP28 .

UNEA-6 has set aside a day during its session that will be dedicated to discussion of these and other successes, and consideration of how governments can take broad and unified actions, including adequate financing, to implement the multilateral agreements they have signed.

At the same time, UNEA-6 will not just focus on new commitments, but on fulfilling all those that already exist.

UNEP's Executive Director Inger Andersen at the 31st Session of the International Resource Panel in Nairobi.

What are the priority topics?

Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ), has highlighted the six priority areas for UNEA-6: Water scarcity; responsible mining; mineral management, especially phosphorus; climate-altering technologies; financing environmental actions; and implementation of the Kunming-Montreal framework.

According to Ms . Andersen , “All we need to do is get together and deliver on these global solutions that we have promised to each other so that we can secure the future for all of humanity, living on a healthy and thriving planet.”

Negotiations ahead of and during the event are focused on the proposed resolutions presented by Member States and the ministerial declaration that will be adopted at the conclusion of the Assembly. The resolutions aim to identify and prioritize common challenges and possible solutions. They also define priority areas of work for UNEP.

At UNEA-6, 20 resolutions and 2 decisions will be debated, covering topics such as solar radiation modification, mining, desertification, circularity of the sugar cane agroindustry, highly dangerous pesticides, increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to drought, regional cooperation for air quality, among others.

Single-use plastic bag floating by a coral reef, Bali.

What’s up with the negotiations?

In the Environment Assembly, resolutions are expected to be approved by consensus . In practice, this means that every member present has the right to veto a decision. Therefore, the week leading up to the conference is essential for delegations to review draft texts and avoid or overcome impasses. Negotiations often extend into the week of the conference, with closed-door sessions that can go on late into the night.

As the world’s highest decision-making body on the environment, UNEA aims to help restore harmony between humanity and nature, improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.

UNEP will purchase certified carbon credits to offset travel emissions from funded participants as part of its annual environmental inventory process to offset greenhouse gas emissions, as well as several other measures to reduce the environmental impact of the conference.

World Environment Day 2022

Remarks by James Wakiaga UNDP Resident Representative Asmara, Eritrea 03 June 2022

June 14, 2022

prepare a speech on the world environment day

UNDP Country Office, Resident Representative James Wakiaga delivering a speech on the occasion of the World Environment Day

Excellency, Minister Tesfai Ghebreselassie of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment of the State of Eritrea, Honorable Ministers, PFDJ Officials, Ms. Amakobe Sande, UN Resident Coordinator, UN Colleagues, Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good morning, Today we join millions across the world to celebrate World Environment Day. Allow me, at the onset to sincerely thank the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment for convening us all here today for this event. The World Environment Day which is observed every June 5 of the year is a stark reminder to humanity on the imperative to promote environmental awareness. It’s a reminder of our collective responsibility in preserving biodiversity, conserving our invaluable land resources, adapting and mitigating climate change, and the clarion call to use our resources wisely and sustainably. It is therefore fitting that this year we celebrate the World Environment Day under the theme “Only One Earth” - underlining the fact that despite the billions of galaxies and billions of planets, there is Only One Earth- and we need to urgently take care of our Mother Earth. It is about making the right policy choices that are both innovative and transformative to foster a cleaner, greener, and sustainable living that is in harmony with nature. Excellencies, ladies, and gentlemen “Only One Earth”- a slogan borrowed from the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm still holds true- 50 years on! – The planet earth is under intense pressure and an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction while pollution continues to poison our air, land, and water. In other words, time is running out and nature is in emergency mode. Addressing this challenge is our collective mission and responsibility and at this juncture, I would like to recognize the sterling efforts of the Government of State of Eritrea in championing a clean, green and sustainable living that is in harmony with nature. For example, the Eritrean Environmental Protection, Management and Rehabilitation Framework (2017), has placed human well-being at the center of the national agenda of development while protecting the environment. In this regard, the Government has made commendable efforts to foster an environmental policy framework that is consistent with sustainable development, and at the same time, promoting community participation in the conservation, protection, and enhancement of the environment. Eritrea has also been a strong voice of reason in the global debate for environmental protection at the local, regional, and international stage. Honourable Minister, Ladies and Gentlemen, Eritrea is commended for the bold and courageous step in took to ban the use of plastic bags in 2004 and hence becoming one of the few countries if not a trailblazer in taking this decisive step. Eritrea has also consistently worked towards enhancing its forest cover while at the same time promoting the use of renewable clean energy. The Greening Campaign that was initiated since the early years of independence has made immense contribution to environmental conservation efforts. UNDP along with our sister agencies are pleased to have been part of this exciting and impactful journey. I wish to assure you, Honourable Minister, of our joint commitment and readiness to scale- up the partnership to an even higher level! This will have a greater impact on climate action which disproportionally affects more women and girls and could significantly contribute to the realization of the agenda 2030. I would also like to applaud the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment for the recent initiatives to update the NDC (National Determined Contribution)—a climate action plan to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts. The NDC provides a roadmap for the nation towards reducing emissions, adapting to protect lives and livelihoods and transformation of the economy and society. UNDP is also keen to partner in undertaking a Biodiversity Stocktaking Assessment which would contribute to biodiversity conservation through protecting endangered animal and plant species in the country. In Conclusion, Ladies and Gentlemen Let me reiterate the commitment of UNDP and sister Agencies to strengthen our partnership with the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment and other line Ministries. Together we can foment transformative actions on climate resilience and green growth that are nationally owned, inclusive, sustainable, and equitable, and prioritizing women and girls who bear the brunt of climate change. Thank you, Honourable Minister Tesfai Ghebreselassie for the invitation and for your Ministry’s outstanding contribution in leading the fight against climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. I wish you all a successful Observance of World Environment Day.

From Blinken to Trump: Javier Milei’s Strange Trip

The Argentine president’s zeal to befriend the next occupant of the White House led him on a two-day tour of the political poles of the United States.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Javier Milei of Argentina walking in a formal room with flags of both countries.

By Jack Nicas

Jack Nicas, who covers Argentina, reported from Rio de Janeiro.

President Javier Milei of Argentina hosted U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken in Buenos Aires on Friday morning to discuss the various ways Mr. Milei is reshaping Argentina foreign policy in line with the United States.

A few hours later, both men were set to board separate planes for Washington. Mr. Blinken was going back to the White House and President Biden. Mr. Milei was headed to the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, where he would take the stage ahead of former President Donald J. Trump and give a speech that would almost certainly rail against the dangers of the left.

Mr. Milei’s hectic itinerary — traveling south to north, left to right — shows how the new Argentine president is trying to navigate the politically turbulent waters of the United States in an election year, knowing that the next administration could be crucial to his own success.

In addition to being Argentina’s largest foreign investor and its third-largest trade partner, the United States has the most control of any country over the International Monetary Fund, to which Argentina owes $40 billion.

Argentina is largely broke — Mr. Milei’s new slogan is “There’s no money” — and his plan to pull Argentina out of its financial crisis could hinge on getting more money from the I.M.F. and more time to pay it back.

He is already rushing ahead with his economic plans as Argentina’s annual inflation exceeds 250 percent , the highest in the world by some measures, and protests and strikes mount . If he can stabilize Argentina’s economy, a feat no Argentine president has accomplished in decades, he has said he wants to ditch Argentina’s currency for the U.S. dollar .

So Mr. Milei, a former fiery television pundit who backed Mr. Trump’s 2020 claims of election fraud , has played nice with the Biden administration since taking office in December.

He has criticized China and Russia, aligned closely with the United States and Israel, and pulled Argentina out of its planned entry into BRICS, the alliance of developing nations designed to counter U.S. power.

At the start of the meeting with Mr. Blinken on Friday, Mr. Milei told reporters, “Argentina has decided to return to the side of the West, to the side of progress, to democracy and, above all, freedom.”

After the meeting, when asked what he thought of Mr. Milei’s travel plans, Mr. Blinken said, “That’s entirely up to him.” He added that he “could not be more pleased, on behalf of President Biden, with the meeting we just had.”

The United States has plenty to gain in Argentina, in particular the nation’s vast reserves of strategic minerals, including lithium, which is a major component in batteries for electric cars. It was a topic of the talks between Mr. Milei and Mr. Blinken on Friday.

But the friendship Mr. Milei is aiming to forge with Mr. Biden is somewhat complicated by his separate bid to boost his global image as a warrior against the modern left , which he says is poisoning the West with socialism and social justice activism.

His speech slamming socialism and feminism this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, went viral after the billionaire Elon Musk shared it with millions of followers.

Mr. Milei opposes “social justice” because it aims “to help someone by taking away from someone else,” Diana Mondino, Argentina’s foreign minister, said at a news conference with Mr. Blinken on Friday. She said that even if Mr. Milei and Mr. Biden don’t agree on everything, they can still get along. “We live in a very complicated world,” she said.

Mr. Trump has been a big fan, repeatedly cheering on Mr. Milei to “make Argentina great again” in online posts. But the two have not yet met in person.

That could change on Saturday, when they will be the two headline speakers on the closing day of CPAC, which has become a sort of Trump festival in recent years. (Other speakers this year include the pundit Steve Bannon, the pillow executive Mike Lindell and the hard-right congressmen Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz.)

Mr. Milei is likely to be embraced as a right-wing celebrity at the event. His star power among conservatives was already on display this week when Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida visited Buenos Aires. Mr. Milei gave Mr. Rubio a coffee mug with “There’s no money” written on it, and the senator asked him to autograph it.

Mr. Rubio then handed an aide the mug. “Don’t smear this,” he said.

Lucía Cholakian Herrera and Edward Wong contributed reporting from Buenos Aires.
