In the summer of 2023, the Digital Initiatives department began work on an exciting, long-term project, which focused on the department’s large collection of donated theses and dissertations. With theses originating from schools and colleges across MU’s campus, our department has collected upwards of 1,400 theses waiting to be digitized. Last August, we eagerly began the process of sorting through each thesis and dissertation, with the intention to eventually digitize and deposit them into our online repository, MOspace. Now, as we rapidly approach the one-year mark to the start of this project, our department is excited to share a brief overview and first look at this expanding collection.
When faced with the daunting task of digitizing over a thousand theses, the very beginning of our journey had to start with a thorough organization and sorting process. Our task for step one was to weed out any “unwanted” copies. An “unwanted” copy would include any non-official, non-MU, and non-graduate thesis or theses without advisor signature approvals (which would classify the thesis as “non-official”). We also wanted to eliminate any excess theses, including duplicate copies or theses that have already been digitized and deposited in MOspace.
The remaining theses entered step two of this project, which included a thorough copyright evaluation process, determining each thesis’s copyright status. Theses currently in the Public Domain were set aside for digitization, since they can be made freely available on MOspace. Theses with a copyright symbol (or published past 1989) were boxed up and sent to storage for later digitization.
The actual digitization process of this project didn’t begin until November 2023, and we expect it will continue over several of the following months. With the tremendous help and hard work of our two speedy student workers, Digital Initiatives has officially digitized 42 theses and 176 dissertations, making a total of 218 donated theses and dissertations added to our online collection: https://mospace.umsystem.edu/xmlui/handle/10355/3987 . That’s an average of 27 theses a month!
As our department looks back on this past year of hard work, we are eager to see what the rest of the year holds regarding this project. While it is just the beginning, we are already thrilled with all of the exciting progress we have made and look forward to our journey ahead, as we work to make these theses and dissertations available for our MOspace users. Be sure to look out for further updates regarding this project in the near future, as we have many exciting things to share ahead of us!
In the rapidly changing world of biotechnology, it’s important to manage projects well and promptly. Because biotech projects are continually changing and unpredictable, they are often complex and challenging to handle with traditional methods.
Have you ever considered using Agile in biotechnology projects? Yes, we can because it offers an open and iterative method for the biotechnology industry. Integrating insights from Agile Courses can deepen understanding and implementation of this methodology. This blog discusses the main benefits of Agile Project Management and how it can be used in the biotechnology industry.

Benefits of Agile Project Management in Biotechnology
Challenges of Agile in Biotechnology
Conclusion
Biotechnology projects are often hard to understand, uncertain, and heavily controlled. Using Agile methods can help with several problems that only happen in the biotech sector:
Complexity and Uncertainty
Biotech projects often involve scientific uncertainty and brutal experiments that don’t always produce the expected results. Because Agile is iterative, the project’s direction can be examined more often, making it easier to change course when tests show unexpected results.
Regulatory Challenges
Because it is flexible and constantly involves more people for quality testing and regulatory affairs teams, Agile project management makes it easier to follow regulatory rules.
Speed to Market
In biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, it can be very important to deliver products to market quickly. Agile’s focus on lean concepts and reducing waste helps speed development.
Moving from more standard project management methods to Agile requires much planning and adaptation. Here’s how biotech businesses can use Agile methods to their advantage:
Training and Mindset Change
When switching to Agile, all team members need to change their mindsets. Training that focuses on the principles and benefits of Agile can help employees adjust. Real-life examples from the biotech field can be used to provide effective methods.
Choosing the Right Agile Framework
Scrum, Kanban, and Lean are widely used Agile models. When choosing the proper framework, biotech businesses should consider each project’s needs, the size of their teams, and the rules set by regulators.
Integrating Regulatory Processes
To ensure compliance, regulatory checks must be added to every Agile cycle step. This integration can happen if regulatory experts are directly part of the Agile teams.
Pilot Projects
Using test projects to implement Agile can help businesses learn about its effects and improve their method before a full-scale rollout.
Technology and Tools
Project management tools with Agile methods can help track and communicate about the project. It can be beneficial to have tools that have features like backlogs, sprint planning, and success metrics.
Using Agile project management in biotechnology has many advantages, such as:
Enhanced Collaboration and Communication
Agile encourages teams and stakeholders to communicate, which is very important for dealing with the complicated problems that biotech projects usually have.
Increased Productivity and Efficiency
Delivering small, manageable tasks can help teams stay more productive and use their time and resources better.
Improved Product Quality
Agile’s continuous testing and feedback loops ensure that quality is built into the product from the start so that changes that need more expenses don’t have to be made at the end.
Greater Stakeholder Satisfaction
The focus on customer participation in Agile ensures that the product’s development is more in line with what the customer wants and expects, which could lead to higher satisfaction.
Even though Agile has a lot of benefits, it can be hard to implement it into practice, especially in biotechnology. Let’s see the challenges below:
Documentation Requirements
Agile methods often emphasise working software more than detailed documentation, which can conflict with the biotechnology documentation guidelines.
Scale
Using Agile on a large scale in biotech companies with many departments and teams can be challenging and requires a well-thought-out plan for integrating everything.
Cultural Resistance
Team members who have used traditional methods in the past may not want to use Agile methods, which can make them harder to implement.
Agile project management could change how biotechnology projects are done by making them more flexible and efficient. The switch to Agile might be tricky, especially when following the rules and changing the culture. However, the benefits make it an excellent choice for biotech companies that want to improve their project management and speed up product development.

When considering a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) as the next step in their education, many nurses share concerns regarding the program’s final project. Unlike a traditional doctoral dissertation, the goal of a DNP project is to allow students to showcase their ability to translate knowledge and research into practical applications and solutions to real-world problems, impacting health care outcomes at a systems or population level.
At UC College of Nursing, students work with faculty advisors to choose a DNP project topic that relates to their advanced-practice specialty. The nature of projects varies and can include:
To provide additional insight into the planning and steps of a DNP final project, we interviewed Paige Dahlke, BSN, RN, CCRN, an adult-gerontology acute care DNP candidate whose project ranked top at the college’s Annual Doctoral Student Project Showcase .
Dahlke received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Northern Colorado in 2016, before relocating with her husband to Dayton, Ohio where she worked closely with ICU nurse practitioners at Kettering Health Dayton.
“Watching my leadership exercise higher level thinking when making impactful decisions for patients inspired me to go back to school,” she says. “I enjoyed caring for critically ill patients and wanted to progress in my ability to care for them, so I decided the DNP in adult-gerontology acute care program was the path for me, since it allows me to not only care for patients at a higher level, but also implement quality improvement projects, teach and so much more.”
Given her previous work experience, Dahlke decided to pursue a quality improvement project focused on early mobility interventions for ICU staff.
Paige Dahlke, RN
“ICU patient care requires life-saving treatments that frequently relate to increased immobility. My literature review showed that prolonged immobility is detrimental to all systems and functional ability; even when patients recover from what landed them in the ICU, they’re still not doing great due to adverse effects such as ICU-acquired weakness,” Dahlke shares. “Getting patients up and moving leads to better patient outcomes, decreased length of stay, increased functional ability and better recovery after illness.”
Aware that the lack of collaboration among different disciplines providing patient care in the ICU is a consistent barrier to early mobility intervention completion, Dahlke decided to create and deliver an education module showcasing the safety and feasibility of early mobility interventions and shared a Level of Function Mobility (LOF) scale to assist in consistent care and seamless communication for care providers in the ICU.
Dahlke partnered with Kelsey Schweikert, BSN, RN, clinical nurse manager at Kettering Health, to present the education module and explain the LOF scale at the hospital’s ICU multidisciplinary meeting. She also showed where the LOF mobility scale and documentation for rating would be found in ICU patient rooms. To assess staff perceptions of the intervention and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dahlke collected surveys pre- and post-LOF scale use, in addition to data on length of stay and Morse Fall Risk Assessment before and after intervention and scale implementation. A statistical analysis showed an improvement in ICU length of stay, change in Morse Fall Risk and staff perceptions of early mobility. As the changes were not statistically significant, Dahlke concluded that, although the improvement in each of the metrics shows potential for the project, further evaluation—including longer implementation and additional resources—is necessary to potentially produce statistically significant results.
“My goal is to decrease the burden of one single discipline to complete early mobility interventions within the complex ICU,” says Dahlke. “A multidisciplinary approach will encourage collaboration and improve patient outcomes.”
When asked about her steps towards a successful DNP project, Dahlke praises the support she has received at the UC College of Nursing.
“Dr. Eilleen Werdman, my project chair, has been supportive of the project since day 1. DNP projects entail three well-defined phases—planning, implementation and data collection—each covered throughout the classes that walk you through the process for a successful project. You follow a well-defined process guided by faculty and your chair.”
Dahlke, who will welcome her first baby in July, graduate in August and move alongside her husband in September, is excited about her future professional options.
“I feel that the DNP has prepared me to do anything I want in my career. I may pursue cardiology or pulmonology, or another specialty. Even if I end up not going back to work in the ICU, I’m glad to have contributed to patient outcomes through my project,” she says.

In Thought Leadership
A Learning Management System (LMS), like Blackboard, can provide faculty opportunities to deliver content and engage students in their courses beyond the traditional posting of grades and required readings. These platforms can be leveraged to create inclusive learning spaces, provide learning support and engagement opportunities for students in new and interactive ways, and take advantage of AI-assisted technologies to save faculty time. Blackboard is BU's most versatile educational technology tool, with many capabilities to enhance your teaching and students' learning.
Classroom Inclusion & Accessibility
The challenge for face-to-face courses to be inclusive, accessible, and supportive of all students can often be mitigated through the use of an LMS. Tools such as Blackboard Ally focuses on digital accessibility for students and provides instructor guidance and tips for lasting improvements to Blackboard content accessibility. Providing foundational content tailored to the course can also be an especially impactful way to close equity gaps in learning outcomes when this knowledge is required to succeed in the course.
Engaging Students
Blackboard can also complement and support classroom communication, content delivery, and collaboration. Through the use of four communication tools (discussion board, journal, blog, wiki), Blackboard offers opportunities for critical engagement with peers, self-reflection, creative writing, and experiential learning. The flexibility of these tools makes them easy to integrate as stand-alone options or in combination with each other.
Leveraging LMS Artificial Intelligence
In addition to course administration, an LMS offers time-saving tools for faculty that can be built into a course and carried over from term to term. The Blackboard AI Design Assistant (Blackboard Ultra only) aids instructors with creating and designing new courses and is intended to inspire instructors and make course creation more efficient. As a result, faculty can develop and customize course materials to best align with course learning goals, and students can access an entire course at all times.
Platform Support
The Educational Technology team works with faculty and academic staff to enhance the use of Blackboard.

While startup valuations have plummeted since the bull run of 2021-2022, a factor that’s hit the European startup ecosystem particularly hard, there’s one region of Europe where the correction has slightly worked in its favor: the South.
Evidence for this was apparent during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, as time and time again your TechCrunch reporter bumped into Northern European VCs scouting startups on the “Iberian peninsula” (Spain and Portugal). These young companies bring a killer combination that VCs love: significantly lower operating costs and far less punchy valuations.
Further evidence of this “Southern trend” arrives with news that a new venture capital fund, Plus Partners , is being launched by Enrique Linares, one of the co-founders of breakout European unicorn letgo , and Oriol Juncosa, a veteran of the Barcelona VC scene. While Plus Partners hasn’t released a figure for the launch of their new fund, the rumor I’m hearing is it will be in the $30 million-$50 million range.
Looking at the fund’s co-founders, Linares led letgo, a used goods marketplace, to become the first Spanish startup to achieve unicorn status, attracting investment from Accel, Insight Partners and Prosus, among others. Prior to letgo, he co-founded Captalis, a fintech company with a significant presence in LatAm.
Juncosa started his VC career at Nauta Capital in Barcelona and went on to co-found the early-stage VC firm Encomenda Smart Capital. He then become CFO of Carto, a data visualization SaaS company based in the U.S. and Spain, which has raised more than $100 million. As an investor/shareholder he’s invested in more than 75 startups — such as Carto , Cobee (which exited to Pluxee), Holded and Housfy , among others.
So what’s the Plus Partners thesis? It will concentrate on “health and nutrition,” “finance and property” and “future of work and productivity,” per Juncosa. The fund will focus on pre-seed and seed-stage startups in Southern Europe with a significant percentage of them coming from Spain.
Juncosa told me the fund is backed by founders and former C-Level execs drawn from companies including Carto, Luzia, Kantox, Red Points and Typeform, among others.
He said he thinks Spain and Portugal sorely need more professionally run VC funds because too many early-stage investors, especially non-professional angels and family offices, tend to “do more harm than good” in the nascent tech scene there, because they either blow up valuations excessively or enter rounds on punitive terms to the founders.
“The big news in Spain for me is that we have role models. Also the tech community in Spain and Portugal is extremely open, everybody’s happy to support everybody,” he told TechCrunch over a call.
Which country does the new fund think is “hotter” in terms of startups? “I would say, overall, we have three great entrepreneurial cities in Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon. If you went back 10 years, Barcelona was the biggest tech city. But Lisbon and Madrid have played catch-up very well. Now, entrepreneurs have a choice of where they want to set up their company.”
Linares reiterated that Southern Europe is now “packed” with entrepreneurs who are role models for new startup founders, emphasizing: “We have a lot of talent and founders can internationalize very successful startups from here.”
“Barcelona and Madrid are on a par with each other as ecosystems, but Valencia is growing,” he added. “There is a summit in October that is called Valencia Digital Summit. We were speakers last a year and it was fantastic. I was very surprised. It was my first time there.”
The fund will also look at startups coming out of Italy, completing its “Southern Europe” thesis.
“We’ll have a significant share of our investments in Spain, but, within [Southern Europe], Italy is greatly overlooked. Rome and Milan are catching up. We’re very excited about it,” said Linares.
Plus Partners arrives at a time when VCs are dialing up their attention on Southern Europe.
Yellow, a new VC firm created by Oscar Pierre, Sacha Michaud (the founders of Glovo) and Adam Lasri (a former investor for VC giant Atomico), recently put their bets on the region, with a €30 million fund raised in less than five months.
Furthermore, Spanish VC Kfund raised $75 million to fund tech projects earlier this year.
According to a Dealroom report on the Spanish tech ecosystem, the combined enterprise value of Spanish startups surpassed €100 billion in 2023. It also found venture investment into Spanish startups held up last year, with €2.2 billion raised across some 850 funding rounds.
The annual “State of European Tech” report for 2023 found Spain’s ecosystem to be in fourth place overall and had the highest number of startup fundings last year.
Lastly, the European Investment Bank’s venture capital arm also backed a new fund in Spain this year which aims to invest €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in growth-stage tech startups.
