‘RRR’ Review: Telugu Cinema Superstars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan Shine in a Splendidly Exciting Epic

Straight out of Tollywood: “ RRR ,” a bigger-than-life and bolder-than-mainstream action-adventure epic, is performing mightily in international release as audiences marvel at its spectacle, embrace its emotions, and sway to its music while being repeatedly gobsmacked by its unfettered audacity. Propelled by the Telugu Cinema triumvirate of superstars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan and director S.S. Rajamouli — whose combined names are one reason for the triple-consonant title — the movie is such an irresistible and intoxicating celebration of cinematic excess that even after 187 minutes (including intermission or, as the title card announces, “InteRRRval”), you are left exhilarated, not exhausted. Which, truth to tell, is hard to say about certain comic-book movies from two major extended universes.

Mind you, the two protagonists here aren’t supposed to be superheroes. In fact, they are flesh-and-blood humans out of Indian history: Komaram Bheem, a revolutionary leader and guerrilla fighter from the Gond tribe during the British Raj; and Alluri Sitarama Raju, a similarly inclined insurgent who often led his under-equipped followers during raids on police stations to acquire firearms. There is no record of these two men ever meeting in real life. But hey, when have filmmakers ever allowed facts to get in the way of an exciting story? There also isn’t any record of their possessing any abilities more superhuman than cunning and charisma. But Rajamouli doesn’t let that bother him, either.

In the 1920s world according to “RRR” — which also stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt,” when the full title finally makes its first appearance on screen — Raju, referenced here as Ram, is a fiercely determined firebrand from Andhra Pradesh who goes undercover as a member of the British army in the hope of arming his compatriots. Early on, he demonstrates his faux loyalty to the Crown — and more or less establishes his superhumanity — by singlehandedly punching, kicking, beating and otherwise manhandling what appear to be thousands of protesters to seize a guy who tossed a rock at a portrait in a police outpost. In most action movies, this sequence would satisfy as a rousingly over-the-top climax. In “RRR,” however, it’s nothing more than a curtain-raiser.

In the Adilabad forest, the working-class-heroic Bheem establishes his own preternatural bona fides while outrunning a wolf in order to lead the beast into a trap. Unfortunately, the wolf is taken out of the equation by a tiger, who proceeds to chase Bheem. Fortunately, Bheem is more than a match for the big cat, even when the trap doesn’t quite work. The tiger roars. Bheem roars back. And if you are fortunate enough to see “RRR” in a theater, as it is meant to be, the next roar you hear will be that of a cheering audience.

The fuse is lit for an explosive meeting of these exceptional men when the British governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his crueler-than-Cruella wife Catherine (Alison Doody) go slumming in a Gond village — accompanied, of course, by a contingent of heavily armed soldiers. Catherine is enchanted by a little girl named Malli (Twinkle Sharma), and claims the child as an amusing plaything to entertain guests in their palatial Delhi home. This doesn’t go over well with the child’s mother — or anyone else in the village, for that matter — but Buxton has enough muscle power to enforce his wife’s whim of iron. He doesn’t have anyone shot only because he doesn’t want to waste expensive bullets on “brown rubbish.”

At this point, you may be tempted to shout rude things at the screen. But don’t fear: Bheem vows to journey to Delhi and, with the aid of simpatico locals, retrieve Malli. It doesn’t take long for word of Bheem’s impending arrival to reach British authorities — and it takes even less time for Ram to volunteer to find and arrest the potential troublemaker. But fate (along with the shamelessly contrived scenario by Rajamouli and co-writers Sai Madhav Burra and K.V. Vijayendra Prasad) tosses both men a curve when each sees a boy trapped in a Delhi river while flaming railroad cars drop into the water around him. Both men rush to a conveniently located bridge — Ram on horseback, Bheem on a motorcycle — and improvise a rescue detailed in another jaw-dropping action set piece.

And all of this happens in the film’s first 40 minutes.

It would be unfair to spill more beans and spoil any fun by providing additional plot details or scene descriptions. (Just wait until you see what Bheem does with a truckload of nonhuman disruptors.) Suffice it to say that Bheem and Ram develop a deep friendship without either knowing the other’s true identity or grand designs, and they greatly enjoy each other’s company until they don’t, and then they do again. There are two splendiferously spirited song-and-dance sequence where the guys delight in their bromance, and they play like fever dreams of Stanley Donen directing an action-movie remake of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Widely known as Jr NTR, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. is effective and empathy-grabbing as a seemingly ordinary man who achieves the extraordinary while evolving into an iconic hero. (He also gets a few laughs, especially during Bheem’s shy yet stealthy romance of a British beauty sweetly played by Olivia Morris.) Better yet, he has sensational chemistry with the more conventionally dashing Ram Charan. It may be overstating the case to suggest Charan carries himself with the authority and assurance of a deity — that is, when he’s not physically or emotionally anguished — but when Ram “borrows” the bow and arrow from a statue of Lord Rama, it seems less an act of sacrilege than an example of professional courtesy.

Echoes of John Woo abound in “RRR” as themes of loyalty, betrayal, and mutable identity are recurrently sounded, providing a powerful anchor of seriousness and mortal stakes during the most fantastical fights, flights and feats of derring-do. Occasionally your mind may tell you, “This is absurd!” Each time that happens, though, your heart will reply, “So what? Give me more!”

Two indian movies pull off major domestic box office feat for the first time in 2024.

In their opening weekends, the Indian movies Crew and Tillu Square pull off a unique record at the domestic box office for the first time since 2023.

The Indian movies Crew and Tillu Square have pulled off a rare record at the domestic box office for the first time in 2024. Crew , a Bollywood movie about a trio of women who work for an airline finding themselves in an impossible situation, stars Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon. Tillu Square is a Telugu-language movie that is a sequel to 2022's DJ Tillu , featuring Siddhu Jonnalagadda reprising his role as wannabe DJ Bala Gangadhar Tilak.

Per Deadline , Crew is projected to take in an opening weekend 3-day total of $1.4 million at the domestic box office, landing a spot in the domestic Top 10. Tillu Square is performing even better, with an estimated take of $2.5 million that should land it at No. 6 for the weekend. The movies both landing in the Top 10 alongside major Hollywood blockbuster titles, including newly released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and holdover Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, marks the first time that two Indian titles have charted simultaneously at the domestic box office so far in 2024 .

How Tillu Square And Crew's Record Compares To 2023 Indian Movie Successes

Indian movies are gaining steam at the domestic box office.

The success of Crew and Tillu Square comes at a time when Indian movies have found increasingly wide audiences in North America. This trend was solidified in 2022 when the movie RRR , a Telugu-language title, became the third highest-grossing Indian movie of all time, going on to win an Oscar for Best Original Song. Since then, four more new releases have joined the chart of the Top 10 highest-grossing Indian movies of all time , namely 2022’s KGF: Chapter 2 at No. 4, and the 2023 titles Jawan at No. 5, Pathaan at No. 6, and Animal at No. 8.

The RRR song "Naatu Naatu," which is performed during a pivotal dance battle, is the track that won the movie its Oscar.

Despite the preponderance of Indian hits throughout 2023, that year featured only one instance of two Indian movies simultaneously charting in the Top 10 . That was the weekend of December 22 through 24, when Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire opened at No. 5 with $5.6 million and Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki opened at No. 9 with $2.7 million. The following weekend, both titles were swept off the chart, with Salaar falling to No. 17 and Dunki falling to No. 15 in the wake of Christmas Day releases The Boys in the Boat , The Color Purple , and Ferrari .

It remains to be seen if any 2024 Bollywood movies or Indian movies in general can match the combined strength of Crew and Tillu Square and give the year another double weekend. This is entirely within the realm of possibility, as the 2023 Hollywood strikes led to quite a few titles being delayed to 2025 as writers and actors fought for fair pay. However, future Indian titles will still have to contend with major upcoming blockbusters, including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , Deadpool & Wolverine , and Despicable Me 4 .

Along with Samantha’s Yashoda, one more film called Madhi has hit the screens today. Let’s see how the film turns out to be.

Sriram(Abhimanyu) and Madhu(Richa Joshi) know each other right from their childhood. Their friendship turns into love but sadly, Madhu’s father does not approve of their relationship due to cast issues. He gets Madhu married to someone else. This does not go well with Abhi and he decides to get his love back and takes a daring step with Madhu. What is that step and will the lovers reunite or not is the story of the film.

Plus Points:

Abhi, who plays the main lead, was good in his role. He did well in all the emotional scenes and shared good chemistry with the heroine. On the other hand, heroine Richa Joshi was neat in her bold role and gave her best. Her performance in tense scenes was good to see on screen. The emotional thread in the film has been handled well.

The way the director handled the love story was good to see. Ram Kishan, Srikanth, Byroz and other supporting cast were okay in their roles. Some key twists in the film and the drama showcased during this time was neat. The scenes related to the tragic love story were also good to see.

Minus Points:

The point taken by the director was decent but his screenplay and narration was not up to the mark. The key elevations were not that impressive and looked forced on screen. The film is filled with forced drama which bores the audience in many areas.

The pace of the film is also very slow and the drama showcased does not elevate the pain in the love story. The emotional thread is not elevated that strongly in the film. There was so much scope for the drama to be elevated but that was not that case as the director missed the opportunity. There are so many scenes in the second half which look repetitive.

Technical Aspects:

Songs by Raja are decent and have been shot well. The song which comes at a key point in the second half was good. The editing is decent and so was the camerawork. Coming to the director Naga Dhanush, his narration was ordinary. Even though his point was okay, the needed depth in the proceedings was missing.

On the whole, Madhi is an emotional love story which has nothing new to showcase. Though the lead pair do well, the lack of depth in emotional and gripping screenplay spoils the mood of the audience making this film a boring watch this weekend.

Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Tillu 3 Confirmed

Siddhu Jonnalagadda has returned to the silver screen with his most awaited movie, Tillu Square . The actor reprised his role as DJ Tillu following the massive success of the 2022 movie of the same name. So far, the Telugu romance crime comedy has been in the theaters for three days, and its collection already seems promising. While fans are enjoying the return of Tillu, its makers have already announced a third part, Tillu 3, in the film franchise.

DJ Tillu follows the story of Tillu and his adventures. While he aspires to become a disc jockey, his life takes a major turn when he falls in love. The movie’s official sequel saw Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Tillu going on another fun-filled adventure. While he romances with Anupama Parameswaran’s Lily, the film also features some crime comedy.

Tilllu Square Producer confirmed a third installment in the DJ Tillu franchise

The team of Tillu Square recently held a press meeting in Hyderabad and addressed several questions about the film franchise. According to the Hindustan Times , the movie’s producer also confirmed a third part in the franchise. Producer Naga Vamsi revealed that Tillu will be back with another installment and the official announcement will be made soon. He said, “We will be making Tillu 3, right now it isn’t announced at the end of Tillu Square. We’ll insert an official announcement from Monday.”

During the meeting, Siddhu Jonnalagadda also opened up about Tillu Square. He said, “The intention wasn’t to make a better film. When a character receives such love, we wanted to make a film that sustains it. Sequels rarely work, so I knew Tillu Square would work as a film, but wasn’t sure it would as a sequel.” He further added, “I think Tillu is like a ticking time bomb, he has a lot of scope to be funny depending on the situations he’s in.”

As per reports , Siddhu Jonnalagadda will pen the script of Tillu 3 and is getting paid a heavy fee.
