They have the power to help us travel through worlds without moving from our places. In addition, books also enhance our imagination. Growing up, my parents and teachers always encouraged me to read. They taught me the importance of reading. Subsequently, I have read several books. However, one boom that will always be my favourite is Harry Potter. It is one of the most intriguing reads of my life. I have read all the books of this series, yet I read them again as I never get bored of it.

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter was a series of books authored by one of the most eminent writers of our generation, J.K. Rowling. These books showcase the wizarding world and its workings. J.K. Rowling has been so successful at weaving a picture of this world, that it feels real. Although the series contains seven books, I have a particular favourite. My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

What Harry Potter Series Taught Me?

Even though the books are about the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains a lot of lessons for young people to learn. Firstly, it teaches us the importance of friendship. I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books gave me hope. They taught me the meaning of hope and how there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the strength to cling on to hope in the most desperate times just like Harry did all his life. These are some of the most essential things I learned from Harry Potter.

In conclusion, while there were many movies made in the books. Nothing beats the essence and originality of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any form of media. Therefore, the Goblet of Fire remains to be my favourite book.

1. best read: diary of a wimpy kid.

My favourite book is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ as it is essentially a novel in cartoons. It is written and illustrated by the talented Jeff Kinney and is the first book in the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series. The book has also been adapted to a film.

This book is written in the form of diary entries of a boy named Greg Heffley who struggles to gain popularity in middle school. He strictly refers to the diary as a journal and intends to be rich and famous one day. The author takes the reader through hilarious incidents that take place at Greg’s school and home.

Rowley, Greg’s friend, gains popularity in school. Greg tries to take advantage of this and hence, ends up in situations that test their friendship.

One of the memorable incidents in the book is the discussion around the “Cheese Touch”. Greg narrates that someone had left a piece of cheese in school and it got mouldy. Anyone who touched it would have the “Cheese Touch” and would have to pass it on to someone else by touching them. Luckily the last person of the infamous “Cheese Touch” moved away!

Greg also introduces his family to the reader and narrates hilarious incidents involving his family members. The little adventure on which Greg and his friends embarked on Halloween day was really very funny.

Greg is not fond of Patty Farrel as she is always looking to get him into trouble. There are instances where he had a chance to get back at her, and these are some of the memorable parts of the book.

I like the fact that the book is written in a style that is very different from the conventional reads today. The storyline and illustrations strike a chord with the reader as they are able to relate to the incidents easily.

2. Favourite Book: Dork Diaries

Dork Diaries is a children’s book series that is written in the format of the diary of a 14-year old girl, Nikki Maxwell. The books have drawings, comic strips, and doodles of incidents from the girl’s life.

The first book of the ‘Dork Diaries’ series is my favourite. It narrates the life of Nikki Maxwell who is unhappy to attend Westchester Country Day, a middle school that her father arranges. She is unable to make friends among the wealthy children attending the school.

Nikki gets a locker right next to the most popular girl in school, MacKenzie Hollister, who calls her a dork. MacKenzie also tries to bully Nikki as and when she gets a chance. Nikki soon makes friends with two other girls, Chloe and Zoey. She also starts to like Brandon from school. 

When Nikki enters an art show in school, she finds that MacKenzie will be competing with her and she is determined to win.

The book follows the life of Nikki through diary entries and comic strips. There are several hilarious descriptions of her family that made me laugh out loud. I really like the format of the book, wherein the monotony of the text is broken by the illustrations.

This is a very popular book across the world and has a large reader base among middle school children.

1. best book: harry potter and the chamber of secrets.

I have read most of the books in the Harry Potter series and my favourite is ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. This is the second novel in the series written by the famed author, J.K. Rowling.

The story of the book is as enchanting and mysterious as the other Harry Potter books. It narrates the incidents that take place during the second year of Harry’s studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As Harry was packing his bags to return to school after a hideous summer, he gets warned by an impish creature, Dobby. The creature says that Harry will be in the midst of disaster if he returns to Hogwarts.

At Hogwarts, Harry has to tolerate a new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. A spirit named Moaning Myrtle also starts haunting the girl’s bathroom. In the midst of all this, the children find a series of messages on the corridors of the school that mention the “Chamber of Secrets” being opened and the “heir of Slytherin” intending to kill students who do not belong to all-magical families. This is followed by attacks on the residents of the school.

Harry starts investigating the attacks with the help of his friends Ron and Hermione and has an amazing adventure that keeps the reader gripped to the novel. The book has been adapted into a film that has won a lot of accolades and received international acclaim. There are some video games loosely based on this book as well.

2. Not to be Missed: Percy Jackson – The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief is the first book of the ‘Percy Jackson’ series. I love this book as it is an intriguing mix of fantasy, action, and adventure.

The book narrates the adventures of a twelve-year-old boy named Percy Jackson who is unable to control his anger as he suffers from ADHD and dyslexia. He is also not able to focus on schoolwork. 

Percy finds that his math teacher turns into a mythical creature and tries to attack him. He goes to a summer camp with his mom and friend Grover Underwood. There, his mother is taken away in a fight with a Minotaur. He rescues his friend and goes on to find out that he is a demigod, the son of the Greek god Poseidon and a mortal woman.

Percy goes to Camp Half Blood and makes friends with Luke Castellan and Annabeth Chase. Grover and Annabeth accompany Percy on a quest to find the missing lightning bolt of Zeus in order to avoid a war between the gods.

Percy locates the bolt and brings it back to Zeus on Mount Olympus. He rewards the boy by not killing him. Percy then spends the rest of the summer at the Half Blood Camp.

Subsequently, he finds the real thief of the lightning bolt and returns to his mother to spend the school year at home.

The book has been highly acclaimed throughout the world. It was also adapted into a movie. ‘The Lightning Thief’ had a number of sequels, owing to its popularity. All these books went on to receive positive reviews as well.

My Favourite Author

My favorite author is the Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens. My first acquaintance with him dates back to my early boyhood when I saw a film version of his famous novel A Tale of Two Cities which made a deep impression on my mind. As I grew up, I read the original novel. My interest in Dickens deepened and in the course of a few years, I read his Pickwick Papers, David Copperfield and other principal works.

What appeals to me most in Dickens is his zest for life. His curiosity about his fellow beings, his genial sympathy and his keen observation of life give a remarkable air of freshness and vigour to his books. True, his sphere of observation is London, especially its middle classes, but few novelists have done greater justice to that aspect of London life. The only distant rival is Charles Lamb, but he is an essayist and his scope is narrow and limited. My favorite author knows London intimately and lovingly and his rich imagination gives a romantic glow to his pictures of London.

Those who approach Dickens to find a well-knit and compact story will be disappointed for his novels are loose, episodic and rambling like life itself. Such readers had better choose Alexander Dumas or Thomas Hardy. Dickens does not bother about what is technically known as plot-construction. His stories are rambling narratives, full of many a happy digression, for his aim is to present life in its endless variety its undisciplined richness.

The humour of Dickens is captivating beyond measure. He possesses a loving indulgent heart. The drama of life is a great fascinating spectacle for him. He would watch, poke fun at it, but never turn up his nose at it. He enjoys the odd, the droll, the grotesque scene of life. Dickens, it has been wittingly remarked, sees every nose twice as big as it is. Thus, his pages abound in eccentric, queer personages, who provide side-shaking laughter. The humour of Dickens is broad and facial. The fact is that he believes in having a hearty laugh, without caring to be too witty or intellectual.

The novels of Dickens provide both pleasure and instruction. In them, he exposes many evils of his day. Public executions, un- satisfactory private schools, harsh treatment of children, the se- verity of Poor Law and many other Victorian ills are held up to ridicule. His stories have a certain moral purpose. But he is not on that account a didactic writer. It is an admitted fact that his novels awakened the moral conscience of English public, but it is unfair to hold that Dickens always sacrifices his art for the sake of social reforms.

The greatest achievement of Dickens is the creation of im- mortal characters. Most of his characters are drawn from middle classes; he left alone the aristocracy and the lowest classes. His characterisation may not be subtle psychological or penetrating but what variety and vitality it possesses! Among his men, David Copperfield, Mr. Pickwick, Mr. Micawber, Sidney Carton, Mr. Pecksniff, tower above the rest while some of his unforgettable women are Mrs. Joe Gregory, Miss Havisham, Mrs. Cummidge and Miss Betsy Trotwood.

فارغ اوقات کو مصروفیت میں لانے کے لئے انسان کو کوئی نہ کوئی کام ضرور کرنا چاہئے۔ مثلاً باغبانی، قلمی دوستی، تصویریں/ ٹکٹ جمع کر نا، سکے جمع کرنا وغیرہ۔

میں طرح طرح کی تصویریں جمع کرتا رہتا ہوں اور فارغ وقت میں انہیں اپنی البم میں ترتیب وار لگاتا رہتا ہوں۔ اس طرح بے کاری کے لمحات بہت اچھی طرح گزر جاتے ہیں۔

ٹکٹ جمع کرنا میرا مشغلہ ہے اس لیے میں نے کبھی کوشش نہیں کی کہ جلد از جلد بہت سارے ٹکٹ بازار سے خرید لوں اور البم بنا لوں۔ خرید کر ایک ہی بار بہت سے ٹکٹ حاصل کرلینا مشغلے کے آداب کے خلاف ہے۔ اس کا تقاضہ ہے کہ ایک ایک ٹکٹ کے حصول کے لیے محنت کی جائے۔ اس لئے میں ٹکٹ خطوں سے اتارتا ہوں یا دوسروں سے ٹکٹ کا تبادلہ کرتا ہوں۔ اس طرح ٹکٹ جمع کرنے میں دیر تو لگتی ہے لیکن مزہ بھی بہت آتا ہے۔

میرے پاس بڑی خوبصورت البم ہے۔ اس پر ہر ملک کے ٹکٹ چسپاں کرنے کے لئے الگ الگ صفحے مخصوص ہیں۔ ان میں مخصوص صفحات پر مختلف ملکوں کے نئے نئے ٹکٹ لگاتا رہتا ہوں۔ اب میرے پاس اتنے زیادہ ٹکٹ ہو چکے ہیں کہ مجھے کم از کم دو البم اور خریدنے کی ضرورت ہے۔

ٹکٹ جمع کرنے کا مشغلہ بہت مفید بھی ہے۔ اس سے صرف فارغ وقت ہی اچھا نہیں گزرتا بلکہ اس کے کچھ علمی فائدے بھی ہیں۔ ٹکٹوں کے مشاہدے سے مختلف ممالک کی شخصیات، رسوم، پیداوار کے بارے میں معلومات حاصل ہوتی ہیں اور وہاں کے عوام اور حکمرانوں کے بارے میں بھی بہت سی معلومات حاصل ہوتی رہتی ہیں کیونکہ ٹکٹ پر بنی ہوئی تصاویر اس سلسلے میں ہماری رہنمائی کرتی ہیں۔

میں نے کئی ایک قلمی دوست بھی بنا رکھے ہیں۔ قلمی دوستی کا یہ سلسلہ بھی نہ میرا دوسرا مشغلہ ہے بلکہ پہلے مشغلے میں بھی میرا مددگار ہے۔ اس وجہ سے میرا دوسرے ملکوں کے بارے میں معلومات کا ذخیرہ پہلے سے زیادہ بڑھ گیا ہے۔ میں دوسروں کو بھی یہ مشورہ دیتا ہوں کہ وہ بھی کوئی مشغلہ ضرور اختیار کریں۔
