WordPress.com Business Plan Review – What You Get And Is It Worth It?

If you’re an experienced WordPress user, you’ve probably disregarded hosting your website with WordPress.com .

However, thanks to the launch of the WordPress.com ‘Business’ plan , many of the reasons why WordPress.com has been overlooked as a serious web host have been overcome (such as the ability to use your own plugins and themes, for example).

Not only that, but, in addition to overcoming the drawbacks of hosting your website with WordPress.com, the Business plan also includes some genuinely useful features and functionalities.

Below, we’ll explore all of the pros and cons of this service to help you to decide if this really is the best host for your website. Plus, we’ll also take a look at some results from our own independent website load speed tests and performance monitoring so you can see how it compares to other options.

Those who are brand new to WordPress may be wondering why hosting a website with WordPress.com — a company deeply connected with the founding and development of the WordPress software — isn’t the obvious choice. Below, we’ll help to explain why this is the case, but also why — with the arrival of the Business plan — many of the usual objections don’t really apply anymore!

WordPress.com hosting , and their Business plan in particular, still isn’t for everyone, though. So, to ensure this review is entirely balanced (as all good reviews should be, of course), we’ll also go into the cons/negatives of the service.

Let’s begin…

Table of Contents

Freedom to use your choice of themes and plugins, website creation help, website backups and site restoration, hosting from wordpress experts, no bandwidth limits, access to premium themes and plugins, support for custom code, best-of-both-worlds approach to content publishing and website management, access to server space and databases, what about the other wordpress.com hosting plans, why not just use regular web hosting, plugin restrictions and conditions, transferable client sites, multiple website environments, ecommerce support, lightweight theme speed test results, multipurpose theme speed test results, wordpress.com page speed summary, wordpress.com business plan vs the competition, wordpress.com load impact performance testing, wordpress.com uptime test results, wordpress.com business hosting technical details, final thoughts, main features of wordpress.com business hosting.

WordPress.com Business Hosting

Before we get to the reasons why you may not want to sign up with WordPress.com Business hosting, here are some of the best reasons to consider this option for your website.

Being able to use any theme you like or install all of the plugins you want may not sound like much to anyone who’s hosted a WordPress website with companies such as Bluehost , GoDaddy or SiteGround ( read our comparison post here ).

However, up until relatively recently, if you wanted to use the WordPress.com hosting services, you were severely limited when it came to which themes and plugins you could use on your website.

Now, though, customers of the WordPress.com Business hosting plan can not only search for and install themes and plugins directly from within their WordPress dashboard, but they can also upload themes and plugins from their computer — including those they’ve purchased directly from other sources, or even ones they’ve created themselves.

There are some plugins that aren’t allowed , such as WP Super Cache, BackWPup and Advanced Database Cleaner. However, having a list of prohibited plugins is a pretty common practice with many managed WordPress hosts, including WP Engine and Kinsta (read our comparison here ), who also ban plugins that might negatively affect the service they provide.

Fortunately, the features of the banned plugins, such as caching, website backups and other optimization tools are available to you as part of the WordPress.com Business hosting plan. Because of this, you’re not really missing out on any essential functionality. Instead, you’re just getting access to these features directly from your web host, rather than from third-party plugin developers. This could even be a benefit, because if anything goes wrong, or if you need help, you’ve only got one company to deal with, rather than multiple providers.

Whether you’re new to creating websites or you need some inspiration for your next project, you should find the WordPress.com website creation wizard useful. Although you can use the default WordPress user experience that’s available with self-hosted websites, with WordPress.com hosting, you also get the option of walking through the setup process to launch your site.

Website Creation Checklist

As well as the helpful checklist, the wizard also lays the foundation for your site by asking what type of project you’re working on. Throughout the wizard, the live chat icon is displayed, giving you a quick way to get help from the support staff should you need it.

Choose type of website

After you’ve chosen the type of website you want to create, such as a blog or business site, you can then apply one of the prebuilt styles or demos. There are lots of them to choose from, so, no matter what you’re working on, you should find a relevant option.

Define website topic

Once you’ve defined what type of website you want to create, the wizard will add some content and show you the relevant options related to themes and other design decisions.

Website Setup Wizard

You can also quickly choose from the available formatting styles through the wizard, enabling you to change the fonts, colors and other display properties of your site.

Choose website formatting

Once the site is starting to take shape, you can begin editing the placeholder content and adding your own text through the intuitive interface. Simply click on the text you want to edit, and you can type directly into the page.

Click-and-Type Editing

Finally, you can choose a domain name or address for your website. The WordPress.com wizard will help you to find a suitable address and domain name extension, and you get the domain name free for the first year as part of the WordPress.com Business plan (although you will have to pay to renew it each following year).

Choosing a Domain

As part of the service, Business plan customers can also schedule a one-on-one session with a member of the WordPress.com support staff to help set up their site and learn more about the WordPress software.

Although you don’t have to use the wizard, as you can see, it’s a comprehensive tool that will help new website owners and WordPress users quickly build the outline of their site. While there are lots of third-party website builder tools for WordPress, it’s nice to have access to one that’s been built by the WordPress team, and that integrates seamlessly into the WordPress software.

Everything’s Managed for You

Not only do they help you to launch your website, but they’ll also manage it for you — or at least many of the most important aspects of running a WordPress website.

What this means in practice is that the WordPress.com team will do their best to ensure your website is running smoothly and securely. So, for example, if your website suddenly becomes popular, maybe after an article has gone viral or your audience has gradually grown, extra server resources will be seamlessly allocated to your site. This is all done without the need to upgrade your plan or move your website, as can be the case with some other hosts.

You can also set the plugins you’ve installed to be automatically updated (although, even if you don’t enable this feature, some plugins will be updated anyway if a security-related fix is made available).

Plugin Update Manager

As part of this managed service, your website is automatically backed up each day. Restoring a backup and rewinding your site to one of the backup points is very straightforward, and you can also download the backup files for safekeeping.

WordPress Backup System

As this functionality is provided via the premium VaultPress service, also from Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com, whose founder also helped to create WordPress), you get access to one of the best WordPress backup solutions around as part of the WordPress.com Business plan. If you do download a backup, the extracted archive gives you access to all of the files that make up your website, including the WordPress database.

Website Backup File Contents

Another really nice feature of the WordPress.com Business hosting service is that you can view a list of the last thousand activities that have been carried out on your site from your dashboard. This includes who has logged in, when and from which IP address.

Website Activity Log

Although not everything is logged, a lot of activities are, including plugin-related activity, content creation and deletion, and other changes to your site. From the activity log, it’s possible to rewind to before a previous action was performed.

So, if you’ve accidentally deleted a page, for example, you should be able to effectively undo this action via the activity log. However, you will lose any of the other changes you made to your site since that point.

Rewind Website Changes

Although the backups and restore points can be accessed through your website dashboard, if your site is down or unavailable, perhaps due to a fatal error, it’s still possible to use the backup functionality to restore your site to a previous point.

While most web hosts provide some type of backup solution, this VaultPress-powered system from WordPress.com is the most functional and easy to use so far.

WordPres.com Support

Many of the best managed and shared WordPress hosts pride themselves on hiring expert support staff to look after the websites of their customers and provide them with assistance when they need help.

These companies also optimize their servers and the other technology they use to get the best performance out of WordPress.

While that’s great, if you choose to become a WordPress.com Business customer, you’ll effectively be cutting out the middleman and hosting your website directly with the company whose founder helped to create WordPress, and who continues to support the development of this software.

You also get 24/7 access to the WordPress.com support staff, or Happiness Engineers as they like to call them, via the live chat and email ticketing channels. During testing for this WordPress.com Business review, the support staff was both responsive and helpful.

So, in theory, if there’s anyone who knows how to host, manage and support WordPress websites and their owners, it should be WordPress.com.

The WordPress.com and WordPress.org connection doesn’t guarantee a high-end service, though. So, to help establish what type of service customers do get access to, the speed tests, uptime monitoring and load handling results later on in this review will reveal what the actual situation is.

There are no bandwidth or visitor limits in place on the Business plan, something that is pretty rare when it comes to managed WordPress hosting.

The 200 GB storage space is generous too, making the WordPress.com Business plan an attractive option if you want to host large files or receive lots of traffic to your website — especially in this price range.

Podcast Audio File Player

The WordPress.com plans now also have improved support for hosting podcasts , so, if you’re thinking about starting your own show, this is another reason to consider this host for your website. Video hosting is also well accommodated, thanks to the VideoPress player and support on the Business plan.

Customers on the Business plan (and lower-priced Premium plan) get access to a selection of themes they’d otherwise have to pay to use. At the time of writing, there were more than 200 premium themes to choose from , as well as even more free themes.

WordPress Premium Theme Browser

The themes cover a wide range of styles and purposes, so, whatever type of website you’re going to build, there’s a good chance you won’t have to pay for a premium theme from elsewhere if you sign up with the Business plan from WordPress.com.

More Premium WordPress Themes

Also, as these themes are available from inside your WordPress.com dashboard, they can be easily accessed and quickly applied to your website. The interface makes it easy to filter the themes by their features and what type of website they’re suited to creating. Furthermore, they’ve all been approved by the WordPress theme review team , so they should have all been produced to a high standard.

However, if access to premium WordPress themes at no extra cost is important to you, then you may be interested to know that WP Engine customers get access to all of the StudioPress themes as part of their hosting plans.

When it comes to premium plugins, Jetpack from Automattic — the company behind WordPress.com — is activated on your site by default. Although Jetpack and its core features are free for anyone to use, customers on the WordPress.com Business plan get access to some of the Jetpack modules from the paid plans , which would cost from $11.97 a month if purchased separately.

Among the features of the Professional Jetpack plan are tools to increase the performance of your site, extra security features, and social media automation functionality. You can find out more about the tools you get access to in our recent guide to the Jetpack plugin .

Of course, as covered earlier, one of the key features of the Business plan, over the cheaper options from WordPress.com, is that you can install your choice of free and paid plugins from other providers.

As well as having the freedom to install your choice of themes and plugins (apart from those in the list of incompatible extensions), as a WordPress.com Business user you can also customize your website through the use of custom code. So, if you want to modify a theme beyond what’s possible through its options and settings, edit an existing plugin or customize the WordPress functionality in some other way, you can do so.

That said, if you really want to make major custom code-related changes to your WordPress website, you should contact the WordPress.com support staff before signing up to discuss your needs and find out if they can be accommodated, just in case they go against the terms of service .

When it comes to managing your WordPress website, including configuring the settings, creating content, and installing plugins and themes, this functionality can be accessed through the WordPress.com custom dashboard.

WordPress.com Dashboard

This WordPress.com dashboard is different from the default dashboard of self-hosted WordPress websites, and it does a good job of simplifying the default WordPress user experience. However, you can also use the default WordPress dashboard if you want the ‘true’ WordPress experience.

Default WordPress Dashboard

With access to both user interfaces, those who are new to WordPress, as well as those who’ve found the default WordPress user interface overwhelming or confusing, should appreciate the simplified dashboard of the WordPress.com service.

WordPress Posts

However, those who prefer the pure WordPress user experience, with direct access to all of the features and functionality of the default WordPress dashboard, should be happy to know they can manage their site and create content in this way.

WordPress Dashboard Posts List

Some of the features of the WordPress.com Business plan, such as the backup system and the premium theme library, are only accessible through the WordPress.com dashboard. Therefore, it’s good to see that you can quickly switch between the two interfaces as needed.

New WordPress Editor

This choice of user interfaces and experiences should help the WordPress.com Business plan appeal to anyone who has a self-hosted WordPress website and is worried about a potential loss in functionality when migrating to the WordPress.com service. At the other end of the spectrum, those who prefer a more streamlined approach to website management should find the choice of dashboards appealing, too.

Classic WordPress Editor

As the default WordPress dashboard and admin area has grown in functionality over the years, it has become a little overwhelming, especially for those new to WordPress.

To overcome this, more and more web hosts are now attempting to implement their own user interfaces for simplifying the WordPress user experience. However, the WordPress.com team have probably come up with the best solution so far for creating a user-friendly interface that simplifies managing a website without sacrificing any functionality.

Most but not all managed WordPress hosting services let you use an online file manager or FTP software to access the server space where your website is stored. With this access, you can create, delete and edit the files on your server. You can also upload files, such as plugins, themes, and any other types permitted by your host.

SiteGround File Manager

One of the benefits of this server access is that you can quickly edit the files that make up your WordPress website, such as the wp-config.php file, allowing you to change how WordPress works or fix certain issues, such as the database connection error .

SiteGround Database Access

In the past, it wasn’t possible to access your server space in this way or access the database for your WordPress website. Now though, this access is available on the WordPress.com Business plan.

Relatively Affordable

After looking at the features of the WordPress.com Business plan, it’s clear this service can legitimately be called managed WordPress hosting; the results from our performance testing of the two sites hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan (which we’re about to get to) also demonstrate this.

So, with that in mind, and the fact that the entry-level plans from popular managed WordPress hosting companies such as WP Engine and Kinsta also come in at $25 (if you pay for a year upfront), the $25-a-month price of the WordPress.com Business plan makes this a relatively affordable option, provided you choose to pay annually.

If you decide to pay monthly, then the fee is $33 a month. You also lose access to a few features by paying monthly instead of annually, such as the free one-year domain registration and live chat support.

Although you can pay much less by choosing budget shared hosting from a company such as HostGator or Bluehost , you won’t get access to the same level of features or performance as you do from the WordPress.com Business plan.

It’s worth pointing out that the prices listed above are for customers in the US. You might pay a different rate based on your location.

Feature Comparison

If you’re on a tight budget, but would still like your website to be hosted by WordPress.com, the other lower-priced plans may be of interest:

  • Personal: $4 a month, billed yearly with 6 GB storage space.
  • Premium: $8 a month, billed yearly with 13 GB storage space.
  • Business: $25 a month, billed yearly with 200 GB storage space.
  • eCommerce: $45 a month, billed yearly with 200 GB storage space.

The main drawback of the cheaper plans (Personal and Premium), compared with the Business plan, is that you can’t upload themes and install plugins. You can’t remove the WordPress.com branding either, and there are limits on storage space.

If you’d like to know more about the different plans, you can view all of their details on the WordPress.com website .

Now that the WordPress.com Business hosting plan gives you pretty much the same freedom with plugins and themes as regular shared and managed WordPress hosting, why not just use a company such as SiteGround or WP Engine to host your website?

That’s a good question, and, hopefully, one the results from our performance tests will help you to answer. But it’s not just about site speed. As this review has hopefully shown, features like the powerful and intuitive backup system, the user-friendly WordPress.com dashboard and the website setup wizard make this service an appealing hosting option.

Drawbacks of WordPress.com Business Hosting

Before we get to the test data, there are some reasons why WordPress.com Business hosting may not be right for you.

As mentioned earlier in this review, there are a few plugins you can’t install on your website.

While the list of incompatible plugins shouldn’t contain any surprises to those who’ve looked at managed hosting before and seen the lists of plugins those companies disallow, you should definitely check the list yourself before signing up with WordPress.com Business hosting.

At the other end of the spectrum, websites hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan must use the Akismet anti-spam plugin and the Jetpack plugin. Although the Jetpack plugin has some excellent features , some people may resent having to use it. However, it’s not uncommon for other WordPress hosts to have mandatory plugins that their customers must install, such as caching and site management tools.

Lacking Some Features Found Elsewhere

If you choose premium managed WordPress hosting from a company such as WP Engine or Flywheel , or even some lower-priced shared hosting plans, including those from SiteGround, you get access to some features that aren’t available on the WordPress.com Business hosting plan.

One such feature is the ability to create private sites for your clients that aren’t publicly available or billed for until they’re ready to go live. So, if you’re a web designer looking for a host that can help you collaborate with clients, and conveniently transfer ownership of the sites you create, there are probably better options out there than WordPress.com Business hosting.

Also, if you’d like the ability to work on a development or staging version of your website, before pushing those changes to your live site at the touch of a button, this functionality isn’t available from WordPress.com Business hosting.

Another set of functionality not available on the WordPress.com Business plan is the ability to create an eCommerce store. Although you can add a simple PayPal button to your website that does allow you to sell items online, if you want to create a fully-featured online store, you’ll need to upgrade to the more expensive $45-a-month eCommerce plan .

Lastly, while the WordPress.com user interface is well designed, it isn’t as nice to look at as the stylish Flywheel customer portal .

WordPress.com Business Performance Test Results

So, now we’ve covered the pros and cons of the WordPress.com Business hosting plan, let’s take a look at perhaps the most important factors to take into consideration when choosing a web host — the site speed, uptime levels and ability to handle multiple visitors at once.

WordPress.com Loading Time Test Results

First up, to test the speed of this host, two WordPress websites were created on two different WordPress.com Business accounts. On one site, the default and lightweight Twenty Nineteen theme was used, and, on the other, the popular and heavyweight Avada theme was installed and activated.

Testing the performance of the websites using these two contrasting themes should give you an idea of how quickly your website could load, depending on the style of theme you plan to use, and type of website you’ll be managing.

For the speed tests, the loading times of a URL from each site was monitored by Pingdom. On the site using the heavyweight Avada theme, the URL of the homepage was monitored, and for the lightweight Twenty Nineteen theme, a blog post.

The loading times of those URLs were recorded by Pingdom every 30 minutes over a period of seven days, giving an average load time for each site.

The Twenty Nineteen theme is activated on new WordPress websites by default, and is a good example of a lightweight theme someone may use for a simple blog or basic business site. Once the site was set up, a basic page was created that included some text and an image. The rest of the site, including the settings and plugins installed by WordPress.com, were left in their default state.

Twenty Nineteen WordPress Theme

After seven days of monitoring, where the speed of the site was recorded every 30 minutes, the average loading time of the test page of the website hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan was 603 milliseconds.

Pingdom Results

This average loading time is very respectable, and indicates that the WordPress.com Business plan is more than capable of hosting blogs and simple websites. Now, on to the results of the website using the heavyweight theme.

As Avada is one of the most popular WordPress themes around — if not the most popular — it’s a suitable choice for creating feature-rich websites for testing.

Once the second site hosted on the other WordPress.com Business plan was set up, the premium Avada theme was installed, and one of the demos from its library of options was imported. The Avada Agency website demo was chosen for this test as it included lots of popular features, such as sliders and video backgrounds.

Avada WordPress Theme Agency Demo

As well as the plugins that are automatically applied to any website hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan, the Avada theme also activates a few plugins when it’s installed. All of these plugins, as well as the WordPress settings, were left in their default states.

The file size of the page being tested from this site was much larger than the test page on the other site, and, because of this, the average loading time after seven days of monitoring by Pingdom was 1.06 seconds or 1,060 milliseconds.

WordPress Pingdom Avada Page Speed Test

As the image above shows, the test page on the site using the heavyweight Avada time loaded in an impressive amount of time. This was despite the file size of the page being much larger than the test page from the site using the lightweight theme.

Pingdom Page Speed Summary

To summarize, both of the test websites hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan performed well in the Pingdom page speed tests:

  • Lightweight Twenty Nineteen theme average loading time: 603 milliseconds (382.39 KB page size).
  • Heavyweight Avada theme average loading time: 1.06 seconds (5.29 MB page size).

However, as the test site using the heavyweight Avada theme performed especially well, it appears the WordPress.com Business plan is a particularly good choice for anyone using this type of theme or creating pages with large file sizes.

It’s also worth pointing out that no efforts were made to optimize the test sites. Therefore, if you focused on making your WordPress website load faster , by, for example, reducing image file sizes, minifying files, or enabling gzip compression, you could be able to get even better results from your WordPress.com hosted site.

In a recent comparison of WP Engine and Kinsta , we also tested the loading times of a website using the Avada theme.

Although this article isn’t a comparison of these hosts, it’s interesting to note that the site using the same heavyweight theme had better loading times on the WordPress.com Business plan, compared with the times of the sites hosted on the entry-level WP Engine and Kinsta plans.

However, the site hosted by WordPress.com that was using the lightweight Twenty Nineteen theme wasn’t as fast when compared with the Kinsta and WP Engine-hosted sites using the same theme.

Interestingly, in tests we carried out for our SiteGround GoGeek vs StartUp comparison , when it came to the lightweight theme, the sites hosted on these cheaper plans loaded in similar times to those on the WordPress.com Business plan.

However, when it came to the heavyweight theme, the loading times of the site hosted on the shared SiteGround plans weren’t as impressive as those hosted on the WordPress.com Business plan.

These results support the point made earlier that, if you’re planning to create a simple site using a lightweight theme, the loading times from a good shared host such as SiteGround may be similar to those you’d get from the WordPress.com Business plan.

However, if you’re going to use a popular multipurpose theme such as Divi or Avada , or your website will contain lots of images and other assets with large file sizes, you’ll likely get better performance from the WordPress.com Business plan.

Pure page speed isn’t the only metric we looked at for our WordPress.com Business plan review. We also wanted to know how well the sites hosted on this plan could handle multiple visitors accessing them at the same time.

As our test sites don’t actually receive any traffic, we used the Load Impact service to simulate multiple visitors accessing the site simultaneously.

For this performance test, the homepage of the website using the heavyweight Avada theme was monitored by Load Impact. The service simulated 250 users accessing the page, increasing from one virtual user to 250 simultaneous users at a steady rate during a ten-minute test.

In the graph below, the blue line represents the number of virtual users (VU) accessing the site at the same time, while the green line displays the load time of the page.

WordPress.com Business Load Impact Test

As you can see from the graph above, the load time of the site didn’t suffer as the number of virtual users simultaneously accessing it increased to 250. You can see the results and other details from this test for yourself on the Load Impact website .

As this level of performance compares well with the results from the same Load Impact tests from our Kinsta and WP Engine reviews, it puts the WordPress.com Business plan in the same category as the similarly priced entry-level plans from those two managed WordPress hosts when it comes to the ability to handle the load of multiple users simultaneously accessing the site.

Measuring the downtime of a website is another good way to test the performance of a host. So, for ten days, we monitored the availability of our test sites with the Pingdom uptime checker service.

Pingdom Uptime Test

As the results show, one of our test sites didn’t experience any downtime, while the other was unavailable for one minute during ten days of monitoring.

Considering uptime is even more important than page speed, it’s great to see that our test sites were available for at least 99.99 percent of the time.

Before we conclude this WordPress.com Business hosting review, here are some technical details about the service that you may be interested in:

  • Uptime checks and guarantee: There are no uptime guarantees in place or monitoring for downtime.
  • Support channels: WordPress.com Business plan customers have access to the email live chat support service 24/7.

Hopefully, that answers any remaining questions you may have about the service. If not, feel free to leave a comment, or contact the very helpful and responsive WordPress.com pre-sales team via their live chat channel.

The WordPress.com Business plan is very impressive.

The ability to install your own choice of themes and plugins means that the WordPress.com Business plan should be included in any discussion of the best managed WordPress hosts . As well as functionality, the results from the testing show that this service can compete on performance with the best hosts in this price range.

Add in the extra benefits of the WordPress.com Business plan, such as access to premium themes, the powerful backup system, and website setup wizard, not to mention the competitive pricing, and this service emerges as one of the best options for WordPress website owners looking for premium hosting.

In the past, the hosted WordPress.com service has been considered an inferior alternative to the self-hosted WordPress experience. Now, though, the Business plan from WordPress.com overcomes nearly all of the objections anyone may have to choosing this service over traditional web hosting.

So, if you’re looking for the best hosting experience for your website, the WordPress.com Business plan should definitely be on your shortlist.

WordPress Business Plan Review

WordPress Business Plan Review: Is It Worth It? (5 Truths)

Here is an in-depth WordPress Business plan review! Let’s find out if the Business plan is worth it for your website. Are you thinking about upgrading from your free WordPress plan? The WordPress Business plan is the largest of all of the  WordPress.com  plans. If you desire to create a website with WP.com, then this would be the best plan to choose because it comes with the most perks. Although it comes with the most perks, is it the best overall choice?

This is what we are going to answer today. Before you pay $300 for a website, make sure to read this review article. I will help you with making the best choice and below I will help you with creating a successful blog site today.

WordPress business plan price

You save more money when you self-host your website instead of using the WordPress.com Business plan.

How much does WordPress business cost?

How much is the WordPress business plan cost? Let’s find out!

The Business plan is one of the most expensive website builders that you will find. Is WordPress business worth it at $25 a month? To me this is a ridiculous price for a beginner to pay to have a website.

The WordPress Premium plan costs $8 a month . The Business plan is $17 per month more than the WordPress Premium blog, which is the most popular paid plan that WordPress offers. The Personal plan costs $4 a month. The Business plan is $21 more than the WordPress Personal plan. Yearly you will be paying $32 with Personal. You will be paying $96 a year with Premium. With the Business plan, you will be paying $300 a year.

Instead of paying these prices, you are better off self-hosting your website with  SiteGround . It makes more sense. You can get web hosting with SiteGround for as low as $6.99 a month with their Startup web hosting plan.

Would you rather pay $84 a year or $300 a year? SiteGround has other plans such as their GrowBig plan. GrowBig is currently 60% off and costs $9.99/mo. Once again, would you rather pay $120 a year or $300? The last shared hosting plan with SiteGround is their GoGeek plan which can be purchased at $14.99 a month. The GoGeek plan is over $120 cheaper than the Business plan. It is wiser to self-host because you will receive the perks of self-hosting and you will pay less than the Business plan with an affordable monthly web hosting package such as SiteGround.

Let’s do one last comparison with the top website builders.

Wix  costs anywhere from $14 to $39 a month. Wix has gotten expensive throughout the years. All of their plans are over $10 a month and they come with website limitations.

Weebly  costs anywhere from $6 to $26 a month. Prices cost more when you pay monthly instead of annually.

Strikingly  can be purchased for $8 to $49 a month.

Duda’s  Business plan costs $14.25/mo and their Business + Ecommerce plan costs $44/mo.

Shopify  is one of the most expensive ecommerce platforms in the world. Their lowest plan will cost you $29 a month. Their plans range from $29 to $299 per month.

SiteGround  – Not only is SiteGround cheaper than the WordPress Business plan, but at $6.99 a month it is also cheaper than the top website builders in the world.

WordPress business plan features

WordPress.com list of business plan features

–  When you self-host your WordPress website you will have more features available to you.

For the most part WordPress.com sites include only basic features and widgets that you would expect for a site builder. There is nothing that wows you with any of the other WordPress plans besides Business. All WordPress plans come with Jetpack Essential Features. This is a plugin that includes SEO, spam protection, social sharing, site stats, and more. WordPress comes with built-in features such as an importer, infinite scroll, related posts, email subscription, contact forms, security scanning, video planning, backup & export, and a few more basic plugins.

WordPress Business has just given their users the ability to install custom plugins on their site. This is the only plan that allows you to install custom plugins. In order for your Business site to be compatible with plugins a domain or a subdomain must be added to your website. If you have multiple administrators only the one who owns the plan will be able to install plugins for the first time. When you self-host your WordPress website you will receive the full of extent of the WordPress features list. You will even receive features from your web hosting company.

Features might be the biggest reason that top bloggers and website owners self-host. It is almost impossible to find a full-time blogger who makes over $50,000 a year that doesn’t self-host his/her WordPress website.

SiteGround comes packed with features to increase your search engine presence and offers features such as cPanel & SSH Access that will make life much easier for you. cPanel in itself comes with features such as file manager, FTP connections, file restoration, backup wizard, zone editor, redirects, SSH access, bandwidth usage, and more. WordPress.org  users are given over 50,000 free plugins that they can install onto their website. To get access to these plugins you must go the plugins section in your WordPress dashboard.

You can activate their featured plugins, popular plugins, recommended plugins or you can search for a plugin that you might desire. For example, let’s say that you wanted to add customer reviews onto your website, which is known to boost sales. All that you would have to do is type in customer reviews in the search box and install one of the many plugins. If you wanted to create a community site similar to Facebook or other social media platforms you could install a plugin such as ProfileGrid.

This plugin allows you to easily create user profiles, groups, communities, paid memberships, directories, and more. If you wanted a coupon code for your business you can install plugins such as Events Manager, WP Coupons and Deals, Coupon Creator, and more. If you wanted to turn your website into an ecommerce platform or if you wanted a section to have an online store, then you could easily download the Woocommerce plugin. WordPress.org is filled with endless possibilities and you are given more opportunities to increase revenue than with any other platform.

WordPress websites that are self-hosted rank better than WordPress sites hosted with the Business plan.

SEO might be the most important factor when it comes to having a successful online business. Positive SEO brings more visitors to your website, it gives your website credibility when you rank above the competition, it increases the popularity of your brand, it increases your ROI, and it helps you to understand your visitors and customers. Millions of people have a website, but they never rank and this leads to discouragement and quitting on your dreams. Make sure that you start with a platform that gives you the best SEO to succeed.

Most professional bloggers self-host because when you self-host you are given the full extent of WordPress’s capabilities. With WordPress.org you can install various SEO extensions to increase your site speed and make your website more SEO efficient. You are given plugins such as LiteSpeed Cache, Hummingbird Page Speed Optimization, Autoptimize, Speed Booster Pack, Yoast, WP Meta SEO, and more.

The revamped Business plan now gives you plugins so you are able to install SEO plugins and SEO tools as well. What the Business plan does not give you is the SEO features of SiteGround. SiteGround offers various built-in features to make your website run more efficiently. With SiteGround you are given some of the best server technology such as NGINX server speed, the newest network protocol, top speed PHP execution, multiple data centers, and more. All of these hosting features contribute to an 300ms average load response time which is among the best in the industry.

Self-hosting gives you the ability to host multiple websites.

WordPress Business does not allow you to host multiple websites and this is one of their drawbacks if you have a growing business. Most business owners have more than one website. One website can be used to promote one website and increase sales and another website can be used as a backup site. You can even use another website to start working in a different niche. There are many reasons to have more than one website.

With SiteGround you will be able to have more than one domain when you select their GrowBig or GoGeek plan. Maybe you might only desire one website now but I guarantee that you will create more sites later. Make sure that you don’t put a block to all of your ideas. I never thought I would have more than one website when I created my first site. A couple of weeks later I already had about 3 other sites in my mind that I was ready to create. Never put limits on your dreams!

Start a website with SiteGround .

WordPress business plan themes

Self-hosting gives you a larger selection of WordPress themes.

One of the most exciting times for me as a site owner is when it is time for me to get the perfect design for my website. You are going to want everything set up to your liking. WordPress Premium and Business are similar. They give you unlimited access to their Premium themes. However, these themes are basic in comparison to the library of themes that are available to you when you self-host. Not only are they basic, but you might end up paying $50 or more for one of their themes. These themes are not the best for SEO and you will not have FTP access.

When you use WordPress.org you will have 2000+ free themes to choose from. If you don’t want a free theme, then you can purchase a theme from third-party theme sites such as Theme Forest, Themler, ThemeIsle, Rocket Theme, and more. WordPress.com even gives you more SEO themes such as Genesis. I recommend Genesis to new bloggers who want to rank well. The top bloggers are using Genesis which is saying something about the SEO functionality of their Framework.Lastly, when you use WordPress.org you can go beyond the average custom CSS changes. WordPress offers user management, HTTP requests, translations, databases, URL routing, and more.

Self-hosting gives you phone support through your web hosting company.

None of the WordPress plans give you phone support. This is dangerous. Imagine if you are operating a business that is generating $3000 a month and out of the blue your website goes offline. You are going to want to talk to someone ASAP to fix the issue with your website. WordPress does give you a community forum, email, and live chat support. However, a growing business desires more than email and live chat. Believe me, you want phone support!

Phone support gives you a sense of security as your problem is being resolved. Phone support offers faster response to your issues instead of having to wait for someone to write out ways to fix your website problems. Through  SiteGround  you are given 24/7 phone support for your website. You are also given anti-hack systems and 24/7 ticket and email support.

WordPress Business limits ways that you can make money.

The more monetizing strategies available to you the more money that you can possibly make. With the Business plan you can add ads to your website through their AdWords program, but that is about out. With their Business plan, you will not be able to use AdSense, Infolinks, Chitika, etc. When you self-host you own that site and you can do whatever you want on your website.

Is WordPress business plan worth it?

Although there are many disadvantages of using Business such as the cost, the small number of themes, etc. there are some advantages compared to the other plans. The advantages of using WordPress Business vs their free plan or other plans include: the ability to remove WordPress.com branding, you will receive Google analytics integration, you are able to attend live courses, your site will have ecommerce abilities, you are given SEO tools, you have unlimited storage space, etc. WordPress Business even gives you a free trial and a 30-day refund policy. Although there are some advantages, you could easily do the same thing when you self-host at a much more affordable price.

Is it easy to create a website with WordPress?

If you are a beginner, then you don’t have to worry about ease of use. You don’t have to have coding skills to use WP. WordPress is by far easier to use than popular drag and drop website builders and it is also easier to use than Joomla and Drupal. Even if you are a beginner you can easily create a WordPress website in under 5 minutes, which is not an exaggeration.  SiteGround  gives you the option of having WordPress preinstalled which saves you time. Overall using WordPress.com is the cheaper option, it providers more features, and more support for your website. SiteGround gives you a large number of website tutorials if you ever need any help with anything. Below I will guide you through a quick website setup guide.

WordPress.com Experiments With Allowing Business Plan Customers to Install Third-Party Plugins and Themes

One of the most important things that distinguishes self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.com is the ability to install custom themes and plugins. A recent change to WordPress.com’s Business Plan removes this limitation, allowing customers to install most third-party plugins and themes.

WordPress.com Comparison Chart

In a WordPress.com support thread created in February, a user asked how to install plugins on WordPress.com. Volunteers responded with the usual explanation that plugins can not be installed on WordPress.com and that they would need to use the self-hosted version of WordPress instead.

A few days ago, Valedeoro, a member of WordPress.com’s support staff, updated the thread announcing that third-party plugin support had recently been opened to customers on the WordPress.com Business Plan.

Quick update on third-party plugins: We’ve recently opened the opportunity to install plugins for Business Plan users. Keep in mind that most features are covered already by the plugin included in your WordPress.com account, so it is possible that you do not need any additional plugins.

Further into the thread, a second support staff member acknowledged that WooCommerce can be installed. A third support staff member confirmed that the ability to install most third-party plugins and themes was added to the Business Plan.

Details of the changes have not been published yet. “We’re still in an experimentation phase,” Automattic representative Mark Armstrong said. “It’s something we’ve rolled out to Business Plan users over the last couple weeks, and we’re looking forward to continued testing.”

This move would place WordPress.com squarely in the managed WordPress hosting space. If installing custom plugins and themes becomes a permanent feature, it will be interesting to see how it affects the confusion between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.

Can Peepso Plugins, Wp Data Tables Plugins & The Events Calendar Plugin be used

I don’t know and there’s not a list of all themes and plugins that are able to be installed.

@titus Yes! You can install those plugins :)

I’m very curious how this will play out and the details… basically WordPress.com would become a “traditional” Managed Host akin to Pagely, WPEngine etc?

@Titus if you’re interested in Peepso Hosting we’ve recently launched a partnership with them: https://wefoster.co/peepso-hosting/

It was only a matter of time until this happens. The confusion between .com and .org has been one of the most annoying things while selling commercial WordPress themes as you’re often dealing with customers who purchase the wrong package / product.

From that point of view this change is great. On the other hand it will be interesting to see how hosting companies will respond to this. It definitely will lead to more competition which eventually is good for end users, but probably not for all hosting companies out there.

This is a smart move for WordPress.com. With this feature, it will be much easier to get new users and to keep old ones. Also, from my perspective finally I can stop explaining to my clients why they can’t use my themes on WordPress.com :)

It would be great when a list of plugins is published. This opens a great opportunity to add more features to wordpress.com and empower the platform.

This sure blurs the already blurry line between WP.com and WP.org. According to my calculations, this makes it virtually impossible to explain the difference between the two.

I guess we’ll have to explain the differences now between WordPress.com, WordPress.com Business Plan, and Self-hosted WordPress lol.

Indeed. If only WordPress.com would change their name…. there are so many other possible brand names that better describe what it does.

Whoa.. this is interesting. It’s like a cheap version of VIP with some limitations (no FTP or database access). I wonder if plugins like Adminer will be allowed.

I believe this will also allow them to better compete with some website builders that allow custom themes and plugins like Shopify.

Funny how different people/companies will see this an opportunity or or as a threat depending on where they fit into the ecosystem…

What happened to the ability to edit comments on WPTavern? I wanted to get rid of that duplicate “or” … :-(

Sorry about that. I guess it’s broken again. I’ll look into it!

That’s odd, the Click to Edit link shows up for me.

No edit link for me. :-(

Maybe its turned on just for admins?

You’re right. I don’t quite know whether it’s a threat. While this may be a boon for theme and plugin developers, maybe not so much for those who have been building custom for clients on .org based sites. Although, leaving maintenance and update to the .com folks might be interesting as well.

Jeff, does this mean we can now run our own advertising such as Google Adsense instead of the WordPress WordAds system? A lot of bloggers want to run ads but can’t. That would certainly hinder this new service. Anyone know?

Fascinating.

This presents a major paradigm shift for WordPress.com, and could present some challenges to the hosting industry, while also creating new opportunities for developers.

Wow, what a game-changer. I’m liking this.

https://woocommerce.com/2016/12/woo-year-review-2016/

In their year end blog, WooCommerce explicitly said that they are creating managed version on WordPress.com and it is coming later this year.

I hope this is not the solution they have come up with because I was expecting more of a Shopify competitor.

Me too. That was my first thought when I read this.

It’ll be interesting to see if Automattic allow customers to install split licensed products from Themeforest and CodeCanyon.

I thought this was what WordPress.com VIP Go was going to be. I’m confused.

Yup, that’s what I also thought. This is a weird move.

For us, as plugin developers, this is a nice move as it opens up more market for us.

But if I were a developer of strictly FREE plugins, with zero premiums or stuff to sell, I’d feel completely cheated at this point. WordPress.com starts making money off of a free plugin. The developer doesn’t make money from her or his plugin. Only Automattic makes money off of their work.

Does this bother no one else?

Developer X makes a free plugin, which brings great add-ons to wordpress. Developer X makes zero money off of this plugin, because Dev X doesn’t sell premiums, support packages, etc. Automattic, however, takes Dev X’s plugin and they make money from it.

A lot of people will buy the Business Plan now because of the 3rd party plugins.

Again, for me: this is perfect. I’ll have more people (paying people) who will install my freemiums, and they’ll end up also buying something from me. Which is cool.

For the dedicated devs who just wanted to offer something cool for free, I’m not sure this will seem like a fair move on Automattic’s part.

How does this affect free plugin developers? This appears to be just a hosting service. Free plugin developers were aware that paid hosting services would be used by almost all users of their plugins before they built them.

Then they should allow for 3rd party plugin integrations on all their plans. Otherwise, it looks like a special feature created just for the Business Plan.

However, I don’t agree with wp.com being a hosting service. It’s marketed as a website builder.

WordPress.com is presented as a platform. It’s a website builder platform which you get to use in a freemium system: some features are free, some are paid.

If 3rd party integrations is a paid feature, then it’s a paid feature of a platform, not of a hosting service.

WordPress.com is presented as a platform. It’s a website builder platform which you get to use in a freemium system: some features are free, some are paid.

It was. That no longer seems to be the case.

If 3rd party integrations is a paid feature, then it’s a paid feature of a platform, not of a hosting service.

It appears to be a totally different platform altogether.

Nice. Well if they re-brand as a Managed Hosting solution for WordPress then everything will be good. And it would make a lot of sense for them.

Smart people developing the core; Automattic just providing Managed Hosting and not having to deal with platform issues.

As a plugin developer I’m psyched for this. Keep us updated, Jeff!

Why Can’t I Add or Install Plugins in WordPress? (5 Reasons)

Last updated on May 14th, 2024 by Editorial Staff | Reviewed by: Syed Balkhi

One of the most common questions our readers ask us is: “Why can’t I add plugins in WordPress?”

This situation usually happens when the user is seeing an upgrade message or their admin area doesn’t have the Plugins menu. If you are dealing with this issue, then you are in the right place.

In this article, we will explain why you cannot add or install plugins in WordPress.

Why Can't I Add or Install Plugins in WordPress

This guide has listed 5 of the main reasons why you can’t add or install plugins in WordPress. Feel free to use the quick links below to skip to the specific topic that applies to your situation:

  • You Are on WordPress.com
  • There Are User Role Restrictions
  • You Are Facing the Memory Limit Issue
  • You Are on a Multisite Network
  • You Uploaded the Wrong Plugin File

1. You Are on WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a blog hosting service that offers a limited version of the popular self-hosted WordPress software. See our guide on the difference between WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org for more details.

WordPress.com users cannot install plugins unless they upgrade to the Creator plan or higher, which starts from about $25 per month. If you are on a Free, Beginner, or Explorer plan, then you cannot install third-party plugins.

Trying to install a plugin in WordPress.com

If you don’t want to pay for that amount, then you can move your blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org .

If you need help doing that, then you can use our free WordPress blog setup service. Just make a note that you want us to transfer your site, and we will do it for free.

Pro Tip: Want to create a website on WordPress.org without hassle? Our WPBeginner Pro Services can help kickstart your online presence and build a beautiful site with no effort.

2. There Are User Role Restrictions

WordPress has a built-in user role management system that assigns different levels of access to users on your website.

Administrators are the highest user role with full access to all functionalities on your WordPress site, including adding, installing, and activating plugins.

On the other hand, Editors , Authors, Contributors, and Subscribers cannot install plugins.

Administrator vs Editor dashboard in WordPress

If you’re working on a website but don’t see the ‘Plugins’ menu, it’s possible you don’t have Administrator access.

In this case, if you trust the person managing the website (e.g., a developer or webmaster), you can politely ask them to grant you Administrator permissions to install the plugins you need.

3. You Are Facing a Memory Limit Issue

The second most common scenario is that you can see and access the Plugins page, but you can’t install plugins. When you try to install plugins, you will see an error message.

This error is usually caused by the PHP memory limit. WordPress is written using the PHP scripting language , and each PHP script uses a certain amount of memory.

There are settings in your WordPress hosting and inside the WordPress core that define the amount of memory a PHP script can use.

When a process reaches this limit, it either gets terminated or shows an error like this on your WordPress website :

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted

The quick fix to this problem is increasing your PHP memory limit. You can do that by adding this line to your wp-config.php file :

For more detailed instructions, see our guide on how to fix the WordPress memory exhausted error .

Do note that while increasing the PHP memory limit can sometimes resolve the issue and allow you to install plugins, it’s important to understand that it’s not always the ideal solution.

Malicious code could exploit a high memory limit to consume more resources than intended, potentially impacting your WordPress site’s security .

Before modifying the memory limit yourself, it’s strongly recommended to consult your WordPress hosting provider. They can analyze your website’s specific needs and advise on a safe and appropriate increase in the memory limit, if necessary.

For more information, you can read our article on how to properly ask for WordPress support .

4. You Are on a Multisite Network

Another possible reason that you can’t see the Plugins menu in WordPress is if your site is part of a WordPress multisite network .

A WordPress multisite network allows you to manage multiple websites from a single WordPress installation. This can be useful for situations where you need to run a network of similar websites.

However, a key difference between a multisite network and a typical WordPress installation is that the network administrator has more control over individual sites.

In some cases, the network admin might disable the Plugins menu for individual sites within the network to maintain consistency or ensure stability across all sites.

Installing plugins on multisite network

To solve this problem, you can ask your network administrator to install plugins for you.

For more on this topic, see our guide on why you don’t see all plugins on WordPress multisite installs .

5. You Uploaded the Wrong Plugin File

Let’s say you want to upload a third-party plugin file, but WordPress keeps showing an error message like below:

Example of plugin upload error

In this case, you may want to see if you are uploading the right file in the first place. Plugin files usually come in a .zip package, which means they’ll use the .zip format.

You may also want to check if the zip content files you’ve downloaded are compatible as well. Not all third-party plugins come from trusted sources, and this may be the reason why they’re not uploading properly.

For more information about installing plugins, check out our guides below:

  • How to Install a WordPress Plugin (Step by Step)
  • Beginner’s Guide: How to Choose the Best WordPress Plugin
  • Should You Install Plugins Not Tested With Your WordPress Version?

Also, to minimize security risks, we recommend only installing plugins from reputable sources like the WordPress.org plugin directory . The WordPress.org directory has a review process and tends to offer plugins from trusted developers.

Here are some additional tips for choosing secure plugins:

  • Look for plugins with active development and good user ratings.
  • Check the ‘Last Updated’ date to ensure the plugin is compatible with your WordPress version.
  • Read the plugin description and reviews to understand its features and potential compatibility issues.

I have woocommerce installed on my wordpress website. I am trying to install WooPayments and Stripe but the plugins won’t let me click on install buttons since it requires woocommerce.

“Additional plugins are required WooCommerce”

So the error is that woocommerce is already installed and active but it is unable to detect that woocommerce is running.

In the case where it is not detecting a required plugin, we would recommend reaching out to the plugin’s support to ensure a specific version is not needed in case there was a recent update.

There is a good chance your site is a part of a multisite network. If it is not then we would recommend checking that you do not have any plugins that would prevent adding new plugins.

I can see plugin widget in my dashboard but when I clink on add plugin, there are no plugins. I just see an error: “An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums.” If I search a plugin name in search bar, the page refreshes but finally this massage appears again. what did happened?

Sep 6, 2023 at 10:07 am

For that error, we would recommend checking with your hosting provider to see if they have the specific error logged or if they may have a setting in their system that may have blocked the connection to WordPress.org.

How ridiculous. I have several websites and I was going to create a new WordPress-based site that needed to use a comparison chart but I’m not willing to pay $300 a year for plugins. I’ll go elsewhere I guess.

I have inserted the plugin name but it still prompts me the same error.

Error: The plugin has no name. Add a Plugin Name: line to your main plugin file and upload the plugin again. For more information, please review our documentation on Plugin Headers.

Jan 4, 2022 at 9:56 am

If the plugin is one you’re downloading from an external site you would want to reach out to the plugin’s support with that error message. If it is a custom plugin then you would want to ensure your plugin name is set as a comment in the header.

Not all plugins work with multisite installations, we would recommend checking with the support for that plugin and they would be able to help with any issues like this.

I tried to click Add new plugin to install “All-in-One WP Migration”. However whenever I click on ‘Add new’ link server is returning 503 error. Rest all links on admin page works fine. Any suggestions?

I set up a WordPress site in 2014 and was able to get plugins without going into a business plan. And I sent up another site a few years ago and it was also not any problem to add plugins. As far as I know, it was via WordPress.com and not WordPress.org – I downloaded a theme and editors that and used my own URL hosted by a hosting company. I’m quite confused now as no one seems to be saying that this policy of having to pay for a business plan is a new thing. Is it a new thing?

If your site is on a hosting provider and not the WordPress.com website then it is a WordPress.org site. Having to purchase the business plan on WordPress.com for access to plugins is not something new.

Sep 14, 2020 at 12:10 pm

I had one site of mine that had the issue of no option for adding or updating plugins. For some reason define(‘DISALLOW_FILE_MODS’,true); was in my wp-config file.

Once I deleted that line, my plugin options were restored. It took me a while to find this solution. I hope this helps people find this solution.

Thanks for the good article! I am bit confused, because I am super administrator and can’t install any new plugins. I can activate and deactivate plugins for sites or the whole network. But I don’t have the page for plugin installtion. Do you have any suggestions in this case? Thanks!

Aug 27, 2020 at 10:42 am

If you’re using a multisite like it sounds like you are, you would need to install the plugin in the network admin area rather than on the individual sites.

You may want to check with your hosting provider to ensure there are no errors on their end that could be part of the problem. Is your site on WordPress.com or a managed hosting provider?

Mar 24, 2019 at 6:15 pm

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong with new wordpress.com blog (true newbie). My menu doesn’t look like those above. All I see are the following 7 options, all are listed on the left: Site Identity, Colors & Backgrounds, Fonts, Header Image, Menus, CSS and Widgets. I guess my question is, is this as it should be for the free (.com) site? Is it from this menu that I will create and complete my free blog?

Sorry to be so ignorant about this. I think I’m missing something as I don’t imagine it’s supposed to seem so confusing.

Mar 25, 2019 at 3:15 pm

Sadly, our tutorials are for WordPress.org rather than WordPress.com which is what you’re using would be part of the confusion. If you go to the wp-admin area of your WordPress.com site the admin area will look similar but you will still have the WordPress.com limitations.

You may not have an admin account or someone you hired to work on your website has disabled your access to plugins area. Sometimes developers do this to make sure that their customers don’t accidentally break their websites.

May 7, 2017 at 10:31 pm

If comments are closed on all your articles, then go to Settings » Discussion page inside WordPress admin area and check the box next to ‘Allow people to post comments on new articles’ option. Any new article you now add will have comments enabled by default.

For your older article you will have to edit them and then on the post edit screen click on the Screen Options button at the top right corner of the screen. Check the box next to Discussion option. Now scroll down below the post editing area and you will see a Discussion meta box where you need to check the option ‘Allow Comment’ option.

business plan plugin for wordpress

When it comes to WordPress plugins, there are a lot of options available. However, not all plugins are created equal, and some may require a WordPress business plan to use. So, the question remains: do you need a WordPress business plan for plugins? The answer is not a simple yes or no, as it depends on your individual needs and usage of WordPress.

WordPress is a popular platform for creating websites and blogs, and its plugin library is one of the reasons why. Plugins can add functionality to your site, from contact forms to e-commerce solutions. However, not all plugins are available for use on all WordPress plans. Some plugins may require a WordPress business plan, which is a more advanced option with additional features and customization options. So, if you’re wondering whether you need a WordPress business plan for plugins, the answer depends on what you want to achieve with your site and which plugins you want to use.

Why Use WordPress Business for Plugins?

If you’re running a WordPress website and want to extend its functionality, you might be wondering whether you need to upgrade to the WordPress Business plan. While there are some free plugins available, the Business plan offers a range of benefits that can help take your website to the next level.

Increased Functionality

One of the main benefits of upgrading to the WordPress Business plan is access to a wider range of plugins. With over 50,000 plugins available, you can add new features and functionality to your website with ease. From SEO optimization to social media integration, there’s a plugin for almost anything you can think of.

Access to Premium Features

Many plugins offer a free version with limited functionality, but upgrading to the premium version can unlock a range of additional features. With the WordPress Business plan, you can access premium plugins that offer advanced functionality and features not available in the free versions.

Compatibility with Themes and WooCommerce

When choosing a plugin, it’s important to ensure that it’s compatible with your website’s theme and any other plugins you’re using. With the WordPress Business plan, you can be confident that the plugins you’re using will work seamlessly with your website. This is particularly important if you’re using WooCommerce to run an online store, as compatibility issues can cause a range of problems and impact the quality of your work.

Overall, upgrading to the WordPress Business plan can offer a range of benefits for your website. From increased functionality to access to premium features and compatibility with themes and WooCommerce, it can help you take your website to the next level.

Marketing and Customer Base

Access to a larger customer base.

One of the main benefits of using WordPress Business for plugins is the access to a larger customer base. WordPress powers over 40% of all websites on the internet, which means that there is a huge potential audience for your business. By using WordPress Business, you can tap into this massive user base and reach out to potential customers who are already familiar with the platform.

Furthermore, the WordPress.org plugin repository is a popular destination for users looking for new plugins. By listing your plugin on this repository, you can reach out to millions of WordPress users who are actively looking for new solutions to improve their websites.

Improved Marketing Opportunities

WordPress Business also provides improved marketing opportunities for your business. With the ability to customize your plugin’s description and add screenshots and videos, you can create a compelling marketing message that will attract potential customers.

Additionally, WordPress Business offers a variety of marketing tools and integrations that can help you promote your plugin. For example, you can use the Jetpack plugin to connect your website to social media platforms and automate your marketing efforts.

Developers can also benefit from WordPress Business’s marketing tools. By creating a blog or publishing articles on the WordPress.org website, you can establish yourself as an expert in your field and attract potential customers to your plugin.

Overall, WordPress Business provides a powerful platform for marketing your plugins and reaching out to a larger customer base. Whether you are a developer looking to promote your plugin or a business looking to improve your website, WordPress Business can help you achieve your goals.

Security and Speed

Improved website security.

WordPress Business plan provides essential plugins and features that improve website security. With the Business plan, you can install third-party security plugins that offer advanced features such as two-factor authentication, malware scanning, and firewall protection. These plugins can help protect your website from hacking attempts, malware infections, and other security threats.

Additionally, the Business plan includes SSL certificates that encrypt data exchanged between your website and visitors’ browsers. This encryption helps prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information such as login credentials, personal data, and payment details. With the Business plan, you can also enable two-factor authentication for all users, which adds an extra layer of security to your website.

Faster Website Speed

Website speed is a crucial factor in online success. Slow loading times can hurt user experience, reduce engagement, and lower search engine rankings. WordPress Business plan offers several plugins and features that can help improve website speed.

Firstly, the Business plan includes unlimited bandwidth, which means your website can handle more traffic without slowing down. Additionally, the plan includes access to premium caching plugins, which can help speed up your website by storing frequently accessed data in a cache.

Furthermore, the Business plan includes the ability to install third-party optimization plugins that can help improve website speed. These plugins can optimize images, minify CSS and JavaScript files, and remove unnecessary code, among other things.

In conclusion, the WordPress Business plan offers essential plugins and features that can help improve website security and speed. With the plan, you can install third-party security plugins, enable SSL certificates, and use premium caching plugins and optimization plugins to speed up your website.

While some of these plugins are available for free, others require a premium purchase or subscription. It is important to choose plugins that fit your needs and budget, and to activate and install them correctly to ensure their proper functionality.

Cost and Revenue

Pricing and business plan options.

When it comes to WordPress plugin development, cost is a crucial factor to consider. The cost of developing a plugin can vary depending on the complexity of the plugin, the developer’s hourly rate, and the time it takes to complete the project. According to Upwork, the hourly rate of a WordPress developer ranges from $61-$80. This means that if you used Upwork, you could find a freelancer willing to build the plugin for $20/hour. If it takes the developer 10 hours to make the plugin, you’re looking at an average cost of $200.

In addition to development costs, you may also need to consider the cost of hosting your WordPress site. WordPress hosting plans can range from free to hundreds of dollars per month, depending on your needs. Some popular WordPress hosting providers include Bluehost, SiteGround, and WP Engine.

When it comes to choosing a business plan for your WordPress site, there are several options to consider. WordPress offers several plans, including the free plan, Personal plan, Premium plan, and Business plan. Each plan offers different features and pricing options, depending on your needs.

Potential Revenue Opportunities

If you’re considering developing a WordPress plugin, it’s important to think about potential revenue opportunities. There are several ways to monetize your plugin, including:

  • Selling your plugin on the WordPress plugin marketplace
  • Offering a premium version of your plugin with additional features for a fee
  • Offering support and maintenance services for your plugin
  • Accepting donations from users who find your plugin helpful

It’s also important to consider the potential user base for your plugin. WordPress is used by millions of people worldwide, and there are thousands of plugins available to choose from. When developing your plugin, it’s important to consider factors such as compatibility with different WordPress versions, ease of use, and functionality.

In conclusion, when it comes to developing a WordPress plugin, cost and revenue are important factors to consider. By carefully considering your pricing and business plan options, as well as potential revenue opportunities, you can create a successful plugin that meets the needs of your users.

Can I accept paid and free listings?

Yes it can. You can do this by creating plans for 0.00 and some other paid amount at the same time.

Do you have video tutorials for building WordPress directories?

Yes we do. They can be found here .

Will this plugin work with my theme?

Our WP directory plugin will work with any well-written, WP compliant theme. Generally speaking, paid themes tend to be higher quality than free ones.

Whatever theme you pick, we recommend using the Theme Check plugin (available for free on WordPress.org) to validate a theme. The more errors and warnings you see on the theme when you run that check, the worse the theme is. You can read more about it at https://wordpress.org/plugins/theme-check/

Can I translate my web directories?

Yes! We offer many user-provided translations under the /languages folder. It is already available in the following languages:

And you can also easily translate it yourself .

Is this plugin compatible with WordPress Multisite (WPMU)?

Yes it is. However, you cannot “network activate” the plugin (as this will share the database). Activate it on only the sub sites you need it.

This can be done under Plugins -> Add New as the Administrator user. Do not “network activate” as the “super admin”.

When it comes to starting and running a successful WordPress plugin business, there are a few things you’ll need in place. A business plan is one of these essential pieces of information, and if you’re not already creating one, it’s time to start.

What is a business plan?

A business plan is a document that lays out your business goals, strategies, and objectives. It should also include a detailed financial analysis of your proposed business, as well as a timeline for achieving success.

Why is a business plan important?

A business plan is essential for any business, but is especially important for plugin businesses. A business plan can help you determine the financial viability of your plugin, identify potential markets and customers, and map out a plan for reaching those markets.

How to create a business plan for your WordPress plugins

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the process of creating a business plan will vary depending on your plugin and business goals. However, there are a few tips that can help you get started.

1. Define your business goals

First and foremost, you’ll need to determine your business goals. This involves answering questions such as:

What are your plugin’s primary objectives?

What are your plugin’s Target markets?

What are your plugin’s goals and objectives?

Once you have a clear understanding of your goals, you can start to develop strategies and plans to achieve them.

2. Analyze your current business

In order to create a successful business plan, you’ll need to analyze your current business situation. This includes reviewing your past sales figures, analyzing your customer base, and assessing your current financial situation.

3. Estimate your costs and revenue

In order to estimate your costs and revenue, you’ll need to know your current expenses and income. This information can be gathered through financial statements, market research, and estimates.

4. Create a timeline and budget

Once you have an accurate estimate of your costs and revenue, you can create a timeline and budget for your plugin business. This will help you track your progress and ensure that you’re making the most informed decisions.

ClickFunnels is a website builder that uses templates to build sales funnels for specific products, services or classes. It’s designed to represent one product that it pitches to consumers through a sales page. Walking consumers through the funnel, there may be upsells and cross-sells that happen as the funnel tries to maximize every sale. WordPress can do this as well but doesn’t have the templates built the way ClickFunnels does. WordPress is a website builder for a more traditional type of website that will have pages describing the company and a store page that features products and services for purchase.

ClickFunnels is designed for the entrepreneur looking to hype and sell a particular product that has long sales pages and video marketing themes. WordPress is a more diverse platform that allows entrepreneurs to build a more robust website using free or paid themes.

ClickFunnels WordPress

Starting Price

Price is a very important consideration when looking at a website builder. Where WordPress has a low entry point, ClickFunnels is considered high. You can get into WordPress for free and still have a robust working website. Meanwhile, ClickFunnels starts at $127 per month. This is a steep starting point for a company that is getting started. However, ClickFunnels relies on its funnels to help entrepreneurs convert sales sooner rather than later.

Free trials help you test the product and service prior to buying it and are extremely helpful to consumers. ClickFunnels has a 14-day free trial period for any of its plans. WordPress has a free plan but no free trial on its upgraded plans. Essentially, you need to upgrade the plan to see if you like the more expensive features. There’s no way to try them out for a short period of time and then make the decision.

Customer Support

When something goes wrong or there is a problem, how can you access help to resolve it? This is done through customer support. Both ClickFunnels and WordPress have support. However, ClickFunnels is limited to email and chat during business hours. WordPress has email support on its Free plan. This is upgraded to 24/7 support on its paid plans, where you can get chat support anytime you need it.

Social Media Integrations

Being able to push blogs or sale items to social media increases your chances of being seen and getting sales. Both ClickFunnels and WordPress have unlimited social media integrations. You don’t have to worry about what platform you are sending it to, you can do it with a few simple clicks.

Storage Limit

ClickFunnels has no limit on the storage capacity of your website. This gives you a lot of leeway to host videos and courses without worrying about maxing out capacity. Meanwhile, WordPress has anywhere from one to 50GB of storage, depending on the plan you purchase. It is feasible that you may need to upgrade your plan to get the storage you need for your website.

Drag and Drop Editor

Drag and drop editors make it easy to customize a website and make it your own. Both ClickFunnels and WordPress utilize drag-and-drop editors, so getting started is as easy as it can be.

Plan 1 Plan 2 Plan 3 Plan 4 Plan 5 Plan 6

Understanding what real customers have to say about a product or service is important in understanding whether it lives up to the marketing hype. Forbes Advisor considers what users say on reputable review sites, such as G2.

When it comes to ClickFunnels, G2 posts 390 reviews with an average rating of 4.6 stars out of five. Things that consumers like about ClickFunnels include that it is an effective tool to market a product or service. You don’t need any advanced website building experience or know how to get a great-looking and effective funnel built. People also like the numerous integrations ClickFunnels has and the third-party tools you can utilize. Consumers don’t like the price of ClickFunnels. They find it on the high end of website builders and on the high end of funnel-building platforms.

WordPress has quite a number of reviews on G2: 8,644. It maintains an average of 4.4 stars out of five. Consumers like that it is open source, which means with the right developer, you can customize the site to meet your needs. Websites are mobile-friendly and there are tons of free and premium themes to make the site look fabulous and unique. What consumers don’t like is that WordPress is vulnerable to hackers and doesn’t have great customer support.

Neither ClickFunnels nor WordPress made it to the Forbes Advisor Best Website Builders List. This is likely because of the specialty nature of their platforms. Here are some other popular platforms to consider.

Free Trial Customer Support Drag-and-Drop Editor Starting Price

If you’re shopping for a website builder, consider the platforms offered by ClickFunnels and WordPress. One is designed more for a specific sales funnel while the other meets the needs of most website builders.

ClickFunnels is best for:

  • Entrepreneurs who want to launch a specific product, service or course that requires a lot of sales content to explain why the product is the best on the market.

WordPress is best for:

  • Entrepreneurs with a tight budget looking to get a lot of features and benefits from the platform.
  • Developers who can customize the website using the open-source coding on the platform.

Wix

How much does it cost to hire someone to build a website?

While many website builders allow you to build your own website without paying a third-party contractor, there are times when people will hire someone. The cost is contingent on the work that needs to be done, meaning what type of coding is necessary, if any, and how many pages need to be built. It can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to upward of $10,000, with annual maintenance programs costing around $1,000.

Is Wix or WordPress better?

Wix wins Forbes Advisor’s Best Website Builder platform. WordPress doesn’t even make the list. Wix is easy to use and has a robust option that will fit into most budgets. WordPress is massive but can be difficult to use and learn.

How many hours does it take to build a website?

The time it takes to build a website depends on how big the website is and how complex the site’s operations are. It can take as little as five hours or more than 200 hours to build a website.

How can I install plugins on my wordpress.com website without the business plan?

Hope this question isn't too commonly asked.

Today I made a website on wordpress.com called boxedfish611584273.wordpress.com . The motive of the site is confusing and a bit long-winded to explain lol

Now currently the site is on the free plan however I apparently need the business plan to install plugins. If I can get plugins, I would download the Google Site Kit in order to host ads however currently that is not possible for me.

What can I do to install plugins with the free plan or how can I get ads running on it using the free plan?

Historically, WordPress and Weebly have both been good options when it comes to building your website. But since Weebly was acquired by Square in 2018, its future has been in question. Currently, Square has only promised to continue supporting Weebly through July 2025, making it a somewhat risky option when you’re building a new website.

That said, let’s take a look at how the two services stack up against each other in their current states. Once you know the pros and cons, you may decide that the Weebly dilemma isn’t worth worrying about, as WordPress can be much more powerful.

WordPress.org is separate from WordPress.com. WordPress.org provides the completely free, open-source WordPress software, but you must pay for your own hosting. You’ll also need to find and download plugins to access the features you want. Small businesses don’t normally use WordPress.org because of this lack of functionality. However, this article will focus on both WordPress.org and WordPress.com.

WordPress vs. Weebly: Quick overview

WordPress.org is open source, which makes it a more powerful option and allows for more customization if you know what you’re doing in terms of web development. Both it and Weebly are friendly to business owners new to web design, but Weebly does host websites on its paid plans. That enables it to offer perks like free SSL certificates.

WordPress.com offers paid plans to small business owners and has more functionality and features than the free WordPress.org platform. It can also be easier for business owners to grasp since it doesn’t require as many web development skills as WordPress.org.

Weebly also comes with e-commerce tools built in. You can get these with WordPress.org, but only through third-party plugins. You can get these included with WordPress.com plans, but you might have to pay for a higher tier to get all the e-commerce tools you need.

Verdict: WordPress

PLAN NAMEPRICE PER MONTH WHEN PAYING MONTHLYABILITY TO CONNECT CUSTOM DOMAINFREE CUSTOM DOMAIN

Even though WordPress.org wins when it comes to the price of its services, WordPress.com might offer more functionality — and overall better value — to small business owners. Even when comparing it to Weebly. However, with some of Weebly’s higher-priced packages, you can get a free domain (if you pay annually, like with WordPress.com).

Weebly’s higher-tier plans also offer unlimited storage and free password protection. All Weebly plans and WordPress.com plans come with a free SSL certificate, though you can also get this with a WordPress.org site, depending on who you choose as your website host .

WordPress pricing and value

WordPress.org itself is free, open-source software. However, you will have to purchase a domain and hosting from another provider in order to get your website to work. Then you’ll run your website using WordPress.org as your content management system. That means WordPress.org itself is free, but pricing for your domain and hosting services will vary.

WordPress.com is different from WordPress.org, as it offers a free plan plus five paid plans. It is definitely easy for small businesses to use since it doesn’t require you to have a lot of knowledge about web development or coding. It also has a lot of perks and functions that WordPress.org doesn’t offer, like plenty of growth and monetization tools, SEO tools and e-commerce functionality.

Weebly pricing and value

While Weebly does have a free version, you’ll only be able to use an unprofessional subdomain unless you cough up some cash. Unlike WordPress, you’ll have to pay at least $13 per month if you want to connect a custom domain. However, if you pay for the Professional ($16 per month) plan or Performance ($29 per month) plan, you’ll get a free custom domain with your Weebly subscription.

Both WordPress and Weebly can be easy to use, with drag-and-drop editing (known as “blocks” in WordPress) that requires very little technical knowledge. If you do have tech skills, though – or someone on your team who does – WordPress offers a much higher level of customization if you’re willing to dive into the code.

WordPress web editor

WordPress.org’s block editor is extremely easy to use if you have no coding background. However, if you do have the skills to customize your site, the platform is powerful enough that you can design almost anything you’d like.

WordPress.org also comes with tens of thousands of plugins, which allow you to integrate other services. The skills required to use each plug-in vary, so depending on which one you download, you may be able to use them with zero coding skills, or you may need to know what you’re doing. Most plug-ins have a free version, but there’s also often a paid version which gives you access to more features.

WordPress.com uses the same web editor as WordPress.org. However, with WordPress.com, you can’t use the plug-ins offered with WordPress.org. You can also only access all the themes it offers when paying for the highest tier plan, Entrepreneur, which costs $70 per month.

Weebly web editor

Weebly comes with a super easy-to-use drag-and-drop editor. It’s a great option if you’re building your website on your own. However, you won’t get the same level of customization that’s available with WordPress. You can play around with the elements in your format, but anything beyond that is much more difficult to adjust.

E-commerce functionality

Verdict: Weebly

One of Weebly’s primary selling points is its e-commerce functionality. WordPress on its own doesn’t have these tools, but you can download plug-ins to give your WordPress site e-commerce features.

WordPress e-commerce functionality

WordPress.org itself isn’t an e-commerce platform . There’s no inherent tool built in that will help you sell your products. However, its myriad plug-ins allow you to integrate any number of e-commerce tools. So while Weebly wins this battle because it has those tools built-in, they’re accessible for WordPress users, too. You could even build your own code to create e-commerce capabilities, but you’ll likely need a tech team to make that happen.

Typically, you will need to sign up for the Entrepreneur plan (for $70 per month) to create an online store. It does include a range of premium store themes and design tools, as well as inventory management features, the ability to sell your goods and services in many countries and the ability to integrate with shipping providers.

If you choose that plan, you won’t have any limits on the number of products you can sell. You will also receive marketing automation features and can get help with upselling products to your customers.

Weebly e-commerce functionality

Weebly shines when it comes to e-commerce. All of its packages include:

  • Shopping cart feature.
  • Unlimited number of item listings.
  • Item badges and options.
  • Quick shop capabilities.
  • Inventory management.
  • Automatic tax calculator.
  • Square gift cards.
  • In-store pickup option.

Now, if you go with the Free package, in-store pickup is the only option you’ll be able to offer your customers. Upgrading to a Personal or Professional package opens up the opportunity to ship orders and the option to sell digital goods in your online store .

Those who pay for the highest-tier Performance package will be able to accept PayPal payments, feature customer reviews and increase sales with abandoned cart follow-up emails.

This one is close. If your only goal is to reach the customers you already have, you could achieve your goals with either WordPress or Weebly. However, because WordPress.org is so highly customizable, if you’re using your blog for marketing purposes or are concerned about search engine optimization (SEO), it ends up being a better choice.

WordPress blogging

WordPress is a great blogging tool. You can use the block editor to easily build a post with no experience, or you can use the classic editor for a more text-based experience. Of course, you can always delve into the code behind the scenes, but it’s not a requirement.

WordPress has SEO tools built in as a default. Whether you’re using Yoast or AISEO, you’ve got plenty of customization options that can help you build highly visible posts if you use the tools correctly. To open the full suite of tools, you may need to pay a subscription fee, but the ones that are available for free go a long way, especially for newbies.

For those who are looking to create content for their readers, WordPress.com is the best fit. The Free plan offers many blogging features, and if you want to upgrade for a custom domain and an ad-free site, the Personal plan is a cheap option. Either way, you will have access to WordPress.com’s block editor, which you can use to create an unlimited number of pages and smart directs.

Weebly blogging

While it’s not as customizable as WordPress, Weebly does allow you to easily write and post blog entries on your site using the intuitive drag-and-drop editor. You won’t have access to Yoast, but there are built-in settings for things like meta keywords and RSS feed capabilities, and users have the ability to download some “apps,” which are the equivalent of WordPress’ plug-ins – though they’re not as prolific in number.

Marketing and SEO

If you’re new to website building, either Weebly or WordPress will give you beginner tools to make your website SEO-friendly for marketing purposes. But once your skills advance (or you hire a coding team), WordPress.org can help you take things to the next level in a way Weebly can’t.

WordPress marketing and SEO

We’ve already discussed SEO integrations for blog posts, but believe it or not, WordPress allows you to go even deeper than that. That’s because you can edit everything in the source code.

However, just because you can do this doesn’t mean you should. Unless you have a lot of coding experience and know what you’re doing in terms of SEO, this is a task you should probably outsource. But it’s good to know that it can be done.

With all WordPress.com websites, you will receive SEO tools. Some of these tools will include the ability to automatically generate sitemaps to help search engines index your website and the ability to clean URLs to help your page appear in search results. WordPress.com users can also edit page titles and descriptions without needing to know how to code.

Weebly marketing and SEO

While Weebly does offer some SEO tools and allows you to edit some HTML and CSS code, and you can get your site set up with Google Search Console, it’s not open-source like WordPress. That means that it’s good enough to get the job done for beginners, but you won’t be able to turbocharge your efforts to the same level as WordPress if you have more advanced skills.

Performance and security

Weebly wins as it includes security features in all of its packages as well as provides hosting, which means its performance is measurable. That said, your WordPress site may be either more or less impressive depending on who you choose to pay for hosting services .

WordPress performance and security

WordPress.org requires you to take a bit of a more active role in your website’s security. It doesn’t offer a free SSL certificate or any security software as a platform on its own, though you may find these features included in your domain or hosting package (which have to be purchased separately from another provider). It’s not that you don’t have these security capacities – just that you’ll have to get them from a third-party provider.

As far as performance goes, that, again, is going to depend on your hosting provider . You could choose a host that’s either better or worse than Weebly in terms of performance.

All websites created through WordPress.com come with a range of built-in security features depending on your plan tier. These features include SSL encryption, firewalls, backup and recovery tools, the monitoring of suspicious activity and frequent testing of your website’s security. It also has a security team that works to maintain the safety and performance of your website.

Weebly performance and security

Weebly websites come with free SSL certificates and DDoS mitigation included. While Weebly uses SSL language in its marketing, the security certificates now operate on TLS, which means your customer’s purchases are encrypted and protected.

We tested the performance of three Weebly-hosted websites . All three loaded under Google’s recommended threshold of 1.8 seconds for first contentful paint, with an average load time of 1.4 seconds. This is respectable. You may get either a faster or slower load time with WordPress depending on your chosen host and website optimization.

While both Weebly and WordPress have apps, WordPress’ user experience has gotten better over time while the Weebly mobile app experience has gotten worse. In our personal experience, the easiest way to utilize all your CMS features is still on a PC, but you can get a lot done on your phone in 2024 – especially with WordPress.

WordPress mobile app

WordPress is pretty good about updating its mobile app, and its most recent version is probably the easiest to use yet. You’ll be able to write and publish blog posts, upload media and check up on user comment moderation. You will also have access to your site’s stats using the app. Both WordPress.com and WordPress.org use the same mobile app.

However, WordPress.com does use Jetpack, which has several features to help you manage and edit your website, even if you’re not near your computer. You can draft and publish posts and even read and reply to comments made by your readers. You can also use it to keep track of your site visitors and gain insights into which posts your readers liked the most.

Weebly mobile app

At one point in time, we may have ranked Weebly’s app ahead of WordPress. But it’s been on a steady decline since Square bought out the company. The Weebly mobile app can be buggy at times, and since it integrates with eCommerce for Square, sometimes you’ll be asked to switch between the Square app and the Weebly app as you attempt edits. The best way to get a good user experience for Weebly web design in 2024 is on a PC.

Final verdict

Winner: WordPress

It’s not just that WordPress beats out Weebly across a majority of categories – though it does. The fact that the fate of Weebly beyond July 2025 is unknown is a pretty big deal, as you wouldn’t want to invest a ton of time and energy into your website for it to be defunct within a year.

Migrating a website to a new provider can be a Herculean task. If you’re not particularly adept at web development, you’re probably going to need to hire someone to help you get it done. You can avoid that drama by going with another host and using WordPress as your CMS.

Who is WordPress best for?

WordPress.org is best for those who don’t want to risk the need for site migration over the next 12 months. It’s also a good option for those who want powerful customization opportunities, as you can edit almost anything with the open-source software. Despite its power, it’s still user-friendly enough to be used by business owners who are complete novices when it comes to web design .

WordPress.com is typically the better option for small business owners, especially because its interface is a bit more simple, and can be easy to learn. WordPress.com plans also come with hosting and security features, so you won’t need to worry about as much. If you don’t need many e-commerce features, then the lower-tier plans will work perfectly.

Who is Weebly best for?

Weebly was a great product for a long time. In its current state, it’s still a platform that’s easy to use and can help you get the job done even with zero coding background. However, because it may be taken off the market or have support discontinued after July 2025, now is probably not the time to start using it. Instead, go with a provider who fully plans on sticking around past next year.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Sometimes Weebly is cheaper than WordPress, but it depends. WordPress.org is free, but it doesn’t come with a free domain or web hosting services. You’ll have to purchase those separately.

The plug-ins you choose to pay for can also push costs up. WordPress.com has paid plans that start at a lower price point than Weebly, but the further you move up in terms of packages and features, the less competitive WordPress.com pricing gets.

Yes, you can transfer a Weebly site to WordPress, but it’s a massive task with lots of opportunities for error. It’s far easier to build your site with WordPress from the get go, and is probably a wise idea considering the lingering questions about whether or not Square will continue to support Weebly beyond July 2025.

The Challenges of Managing WordPress Websites Separately

Whether you’re a freelancer or working for a web design agency, managing multiple WordPress websites is tricky, to say the least. This is especially true if you handle updates for dozens, if not hundreds, of websites. Between remembering multiple logins, keeping track of updates, and the time and effort it takes, it can be utterly exhausting .

It’s easy to feel like you’re playing catch-up, constantly switching between different WordPress websites and trying to keep track of logins. This is counter-productive and can lead to missed updates, increased stress levels, and security vulnerabilities. With so many moving parts, letting one of your sites slip through the cracks is easy. One missed update could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Most importantly, neglecting to update WordPress plugins and themes can seriously affect your websites. Outdated plugins and themes often contain security loopholes that hackers can exploit, leading to data breaches or even ransomware attacks. Outdated plugins can also lead to compatibility issues, loss of performance, and more.

Thankfully, there is a better way to manage multiple WordPress websites.

The Solution: WordPress Management Tools

One of the best things you can do for your productivity and your sanity is to use a WordPress management tool. These tools allow you to manage multiple WordPress websites from a central location. They can keep track of plugin and theme updates, handle security issues, and, in many cases, be filtered by individual clients. WordPress management tools are a great way to manage your time more effectively, allowing you to focus on other tasks, like SEO optimization or design and content changes.

Why You Should Use a WordPress Management Tool

If you’re weary of juggling countless logins and endless updates, a WordPress management tool can be your ultimate lifesaver. Here are a few reasons why you might want to incorporate one into your workflow:

  • They Can Save Time and Boost Efficiency: Stop wasting time on repetitive tasks. Improve your day-to-day routine by automating updates, managing multiple WordPress websites in one location, and freeing up time to focus on what really matters—growing your business.
  • Reduce Errors and Improve Accuracy: By overseeing all of your WordPress sites from a single dashboard, you’ll minimize the likelihood of human error. Consistent management ensures that your websites are up-to-date, secure, and performing optimally.
  • Improve Organization and Productivity: A WordPress management tool can help you keep your websites organized and accessible. You can also easily manage clients, teams, plugins, and themes, streamlining your workflow and boosting your productivity.

The Benefits of a Single Dashboard

A single dashboard is like having a bird’s-eye view of your entire WordPress world. It lets you see all your websites in one place, making them easily accessible and organized. You can quickly check their status, update plugins and themes, and manage users without breaking a sweat. Plus, it’s a game-changer for teamwork, as everyone can access the information they need with little effort. With a centralized dashboard, you’ll spend less time juggling logins and focusing more on what matters, such as building beautiful WordPress websites and growing your online presence.
