2. Aquaponic Grow Beds- These beds will hold your plants and the nitrate rich water. More preferably, darker material grow beds are used, as they prevent light from getting into the roots as it can reduce algae growth. You can consider vertical systems where grow beds are built over each other, or floating beds on the top of the fish tank.

3. Aquaponic Grow Media- It is referred to the substance that the plant’s roots grow through. In traditional system, it is soil and for aquaponics system soil is too heavy, plants in an aquaponics system get their nutrients directly from the nitrate rich water. But to give proper support and structure to the plant, crushed rock, hydroponic clay, aquarium gravel can be used.

4. Bio-filter and Settling Basin- Through this, nitrification bacteria can grow and convert ammonia into nitrates, through which plants’ roots grow. And through settling basin, uneaten food and detached biofilms are collected.

In this system, fish naturally produces the nutrients that plants need to grow and survive. Fish are kept in the aquaponics tank and their waste is settled in the bottom, and then it is pumped through the filter to the plants, and grow beds allow plants to absorb nutrients from the fish waste.

The aquaponic process begins with feeding the fish, which release ammonia-containing excreta. Bacteria are used to break down ammonia into nitrates which act as natural fertilisers. After the nitrates have been absorbed, the clean water is pumped back into the fish tank. Aquaponics can help grow a massive variety of produce, from vegetables and fruits to flowers and herbs.

The Gaza Strip of Palestine is one of the most volatile regions globally, forever at war and riddled with bad politics. The Oslo Agreement, signed in 1993, prohibited Palestinians from digging wells on their land. Combine this with scanty rainfall, and their food security is severely compromised. Between 2010 and 2013, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations set up aquaponic systems on the rooftops of the residents of Gaza City. The food-insecure female-headed households were given special consideration. It showed positive results, food consumption increased, and livelihoods became more self-reliant.

Why Aquaponics?

In 2015, the EU released “Ten technologies which could change our lives”. At number 8 was aquaponic farming. It read, “aquaponics can be used as a solution for developing innovative and sustainable food sources, can shorten supply chains, and could improve food security and food systems resilience”. The benefits of aquaponic farming are multiple - for the farmer-entrepreneur, the environment, and also the rest of us-

1. Aquaponic farming reduces dependence on an extensive land area as opposed to traditional farming. Some studies suggest that it needs as little as 1/8th of the land used by conventional agriculture. Aquaponics allows you to go vertical and increase production yield many times over.

2. Aquaponics does not use any chemical fertilisers or pesticides to promote plant growth. Fish waste is enough to provide the nutrition needed by plants. Since there is no soil, there are hardly any insects or pests either. Using chemicals can put the survival of the fish in jeopardy. It is a robust and natural ecosystem in itself.

3. Aquaponic farming is a zero-discharge system where water is re-circulated continuously. It uses 90% to 95% less water vis-a-vis conventional soil-based agriculture and around 40% less when compared to hydroponics.

4. It is a soilless system. Hence, it can be established in areas with infertile or no soil (Case in point Cherai village of Kerala, discussed below).

5. The aquaponic system acts as a food factory - producing food throughout the year. Compared to conventional farming, where seeds are sown at a particular time and can be harvested only during specific times. In aquaponic farming, the fish can supply the nutrients to crops throughout the year.

Made-in-India Aquaponic Start-ups

Commercial aquaponic farmers make money by selling both fish and plants. Some also teach the science and commerce of aquaculture to others through workshops or online classes to further monetise their business. Here are a few of the ‘Made in India’ aquaponic farms among the many springing up in our country

1. Landcraft Agro, Kolhapur - Mayank Gupta is an IITian turned farmer or farmpreneur, we should say. In 2018 Mayank and Lalit Jhawar started Landcraft Agro, an aquaponic farm in Kolhapur, which spans over 2 acres and gives around 200-300 kgs of harvest DAILY! They grow 40 types of vegetables and sell them under the brand name ‘Trueganic’. Next, they plan to optimise their supply chain network by getting farmers on board for contract farming. 

2. Red Otter Farms, Nainital - Sprawling across 45,000 square feet in the foothills of Nainital, Red Otter Farms was started in 2017 by Anubhav Das and Srishti Mandaar. Their produce is primarily salad greens which they claim are clean inside-out. So much so that it can be eaten without washing, straight from the bag! They sell their unique salad boxes across Delhi NCR. Their clients include the likes of The Taj Hotel and Modern Bazaar.

3. Eat Neat Project, Bengaluru - Hard to believe, but Bharath Dayananda has established the Silicon Valley of India as his farmland. Eat Neat Project is an NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore’s Pre Incubated AgriTech Startup. They call themselves “the farmers of the future”. Its mission is simple - to “revolutionise the way we produce and consume food”. Eat Neat Project also provides consultancy and workshops to people who want to set up their aquaponic farms.

What are the critics saying? 

Roses don’t come without thorns. Aquaponic farming is no different and comes with its own set of challenges. The initial cost of an aquaponic system is very high and demands daily maintenance and upkeep. Tuberous crops and root crops like potatoes and radish are not the most suitable for aquaponic farming. While aquaponics may help conserve water and land, its electricity consumption is massive. Water pumps need to function at all times, and the fish need to be kept at a constant temperature. The fish and plants also require continuous monitoring. Its success hinges on a robust business plan. One wrong step and the entire system collapses. Critics also question if the produce from aquaculture is as healthy as it is deemed to be.

“If there is magic on this planet, it’s contained in water”, said the great American educator and natural science writer Lorene Eiseley.

According to a study by the International Food Policy Research Institute, climate change will be responsible for a severe fall in agricultural production and disruption of food supply chains. Consequently, nearly 23% more of us, i.e. 9.06 crore Indians, will go hungry by 2030. Can the aquaponic way of farming change our grim future?

3. Marketing Strategy: This section identifies the products to be produced, how they will be marketed, and the potential competitors. This section will also describe the product's packaging, distributing, and promoting approaches.

4. Operating Strategy: This section describes the approach to product management, farm size, physical and human resources, and regulatory requirements.

5. Financial Strategy: This section provides income and expense estimates, expected profit and loss, sources of funds, and potential business risks to its success.

1. Overview

Your business plan overview provides your vision and mission statement. It also summarizes your goals for your commercial aquaponics farm. The overview is divided into the following:

  • Introduction

Describe the purpose and key issues to be addressed by the business plan. It provides an understanding of what information is contained in the business plan.

  • Vision Statement

 Your vision statement describes your vision of your commercial aquaponics farm's future and how you incorporate your values into your farm. It provides clear decision-making criteria and answers what economic, environmental, or community values are essential to the farm. The goals describe what is to be achieved by the farm. Goals can be short-term goals or long-term goals. Goals reflect what you want to achieve and when you like to achieve them.

Developing your marketing strategy requires understanding the market, demands of your product, potential customers, as well as potential competitors. In this section, you must convince your reader that your commercial aquaponics farm is a viable market. 

The marketing strategy is divided into these sections:

1. Introduction: The introduction section of the marketing strategy shows the following:

  • The market or potential customers of your commercial aquaponics farm.
  • The products that the farm will produce and sell.
  • The distribution process or how and where the products will be made available to the customers. 

 In discussing the market section, know the answer to these questions:

  • Who are your potential customers, and where are they located?
  • How likely are they to buy your product?

Distribution: Getting your product to the market will be critical to your marketing strategy, as the quality of crops and customer perception will depend on the freshness and quality of your product. This section discusses the handling of products from harvest to sell, including options for storing the product before selling. 

Discuss these questions: 

  • How will you sell your product?
  • Will they distribute your product directly from the harvest to the customer?
  • How will you maintain your product quality during storage and distribution?
  • What will you do with the product that is not sold or delivered?
  • What is your method of distribution?
  • How will you price your product?

Discuss these questions:

  • Who are your competitors?
  • How does your product differ from your competitor's product?
  • Are your competitors established in the market?
  • Do they offer a greater variety of products?
  • Will your pricing be competitive?

4. Operating Strategy

Before developing your operating strategy, it is essential that you have completed your market analysis and identified the type and volume of plants to grow and fish to raise. It divides the operating strategy into these sections:

1. Crop Management (Your approach to cultivating and harvesting plants and fish)

Crop management involves managing the volume of fish and plant crops needed to meet your marketing strategy's objectives. This involved understanding the approach used to raise the fish and plant the crops and the planting and harvesting schedule. Discuss the specific method to be used, such as a raft system , media-based system , nutrient film technique (NFT) , or a combination of the three main systems of aquaponics. 

This section discusses the following questions:

  • Since the relationship between the fish and the plants is interdependent, will the volume of your plant crops meet the market demand drive of the fish's volume needed to provide the necessary nutrients for the plant?
  • Will the volume of the fish from the water support the demand of the plants?
  • Will the fish be marketed as a farm product or managed only to support crop production?
  • Will plant crops start from seeds or seedlings purchased from suppliers?

  • Consideration should also be given to monitoring the system, such as water quality and temperature, pH, ammonia, humidity, water pump, light, and other parameters that are important to the healthy growth of the fish and plants.
  • Internet, telephone, and other communication requirements for remote monitoring.

Consider these questions in discussing human resources:

  • What is the workforce needed for the first five years?
  • What positions will be created for the farm, and how many workers will be required for each position? 
  • Will you provide training for each position?
  • How many workers will be compensated, and will there be full-time, part-time, or volunteer workers?
  • What are the ranges of salaries for each position?

The key issues needed to be considered in discussing human resources are:

  • There may be a need for an additional workforce during harvest days.

Financial Strategy

This section should describe your approach to developing a financial strategy. The financial strategy is divided into these sections.

Develop a five-year projection on the annual expenses for the commercial aquaponics farm. The costs should include marketing, operating, and human resource expenses discussed in the marketing, managing, and human resources strategy section. I’m new to the BC province, and have been SUPER intrigued about stepping up, stepping out and beginning a venture into commercial aquaponics after years of building multiple small to medium scale systems and more importantly completely believing in the fact that being able to grow organically and responsibly for ourselves and the community is something that really is the thing of the near and ongoing future.

One Of India's Biggest Aquaponics Farms Employs 80% Women

When Lalit Jhawar and Mayank Gupta wanted to enter the organic food supply chain and source and supply fresh organic produce across the different cities in India, they realized that there is barely any cultivation and supply of organic produce in India. So, they decided to delve further into this problem, ultimately leading to the founding of one of India's biggest aquaponics farms in 2018: LandCraft Agro . Mayank tells us how it all happened.

"We realized that India as a country has not seen much innovation and development at scale in its organic agricultural practices. Also, Indian farmers have developed a habit of using a ton of artificial fertilizers and pesticides to aid their crops and have become habituated to them. This has led to most of India’s arable land and groundwater being heavily contaminated with runoff of these chemicals. These combined issues made us think about cultivating organic produce ourselves."

The duo then decided to travel the world and visited farms and research centers in the USA, China, Hong Kong, and Thailand to learn about the latest happenings in organic and sustainable growing methods.

"While evaluating all the methods we came across, we realized aquaponics fits the bill well here in India, growing a large amount of food in a small geographical footprint, and also rearing high-quality fish in the process."

The organic produce market is developing strongly in India, with a rise in customer awareness and knowledge about organic produce and its benefits. "Aquaponics is definitely going to benefit as a result of this, and we see a 5-10 fold increase in demand of organic produce in the next 2 to 3 years", Mayank believes.

So, the choice to go aquaponic was an easy one, and now the two growers are using a re-circulating deep-water culture aquaponic growing system. In this, the plants and crops are floating on a continuously re-circulating bed of nutrient-rich water.

Growing demand

LandCraft Agro currently offers a mix of around 12 green leafy vegetables and herbs to customers. "However, we are also doing a lot of in-house Research and Development to develop the ideal aquaponic growing methods and techniques for new crops, and we keep adding new items to the basket we sell", Mayank says, adding that demand is increasing. "The demand we have for them is strong and has been growing at a rate of 15-20% MoM since farm inception and the start of supply."

World's biggest

And it doesn't stop there; the duo have quite ambitious plans for future growth, Lalit explains. "Our plans are to expand our current 90,000 sq.ft. growing facility to a facility which is over 2 million square feet in size, and become India’s (and potentially) the world’s largest aquaponics farming company. We also plan to expand our produce footprint as we keep a lot of R&D going on at our facilities, and plan to introduce a larger basket of vegetables, herbs, and fruits."
