When was Jesus Christ Born?

Today, we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December every year. However, nobody knows the exact date when Jesus was born. No historical evidence exists nor was it explicitly mentioned in the Bible. So, how did people come about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December?

Christmas Date and Its Origin

Many believe that the birth of Christ did not happen on Year 1, but somewhere between 2 BC and 7 BC. The first-ever recorded evidence of Christmas celebrations can be traced all the way to 336 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine was the very first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity, and hence, celebrated the birth of Christ on December 25th. However, there are more theories that explain why we celebrate Christmas on 25th.

An ancient Christian tradition marked March 25th as the day when Mary was told that she would give birth to a very special baby, this event was called the Annunciation in Christian literature. Nine months after March 25th was December 25th, which is when Jesus would have been born.

How “Old Christmas” is Celebrated?

Today, the world follows the Gregorian Calendar, which was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Prior to this, the Roman Calendar was used. However, the Roman calendar had more days in a year than the Gregorian Calendar. Hence, when the world switched to the Gregorian Calendar, almost 10 days were lost. Hence, the day that followed October 4th, 1582 was October 15th, 1582.  Similarly, when the UK adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752, the day that followed September 2nd, 1752, the day which followed was September 14th, 1752.

Some Orthodox Churches still use the Roman Calendar, hence, they would celebrate Christmas on January 6th, which is where December 25th would have been on the Gregorian Calendar. In some parts of the world, January 6th is called Old Christmas, due to the fact that this would have been the day Christmas would have been celebrated if the calendar switch was never made.

“Christmas is celebrated on 25th December every year. This festival commemorates the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ – the Messiah of God. Although it is a Christian festival, people from different communities celebrate it with great fervour and enthusiasm.

A Christmas tree is an artificial pine tree that is decorated with lights, artificial stars, flowers, toys, and bells all over it. It looks beautiful when the decoration is complete. Churches are decorated with lights during Christmas and people hang star lanterns outdoors to mark the onset of the festive season. All members of the family sit and pray together in praise of Jesus Christ.

Kids are especially enthusiastic about Christmas as they expect Santa Claus to visit them and bring gifts to their homes on the night of Christmas Eve and the early hours of Christmas day. Presents are placed under the Christmas tree which is wrapped in gift boxes and opened on the day of Christmas.

Kids sing Christmas carols like, “Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell, Jingle all the way” and perform various skits celebrating the auspicious day. चर्च में विशेष प्रार्थनाएं होती हैं। लोग अपने रिश्तेदारों एवं मित्रों से मिलने उनके घर जाते हैं। सभी एक-दूसरे को उपहार देते हैं। इस दिन आंगन में क्रिसमस ट्री लगाया जाता है। इसकी विशेष सज्जा की जाती है। इस त्योहार में केक का विशेष महत्व है। मीठे, मनमोहन केक काटकर खिलाने का रिवाज बहुत पुराना है। लोग एक-दूसरे को केक खिलाकर पर्व की बधाई देते हैं। सांताक्लाज का रूप धरकर व्यक्ति बच्चों को टॉफियां-उपहार आदि बांटता है।

ऐसा कहा जाता है कि सांताक्लाज स्वर्ग से आता है और लोगों को मनचाही चीजें उपहार के तौर पर देकर जाता है।

ईसाई समुदायों के लिये क्रिसमस एक महत्वपूर्ण त्योहार है हालाँकि ये पूरी दुनिया में दूसरे धर्मों के लोगों द्वारा भी मनाया जाता है। ये एक प्राचीन उत्सव है जो वर्षों से शीत ऋतु में मनाया जाता है। ये प्रभु ईशु के जन्मदिवस पर मनाया जाता है। पारिवारिक सदस्यों में सभी को सांता क्लाज़ के द्वारा क्रिसमस की मध्यरात्रि में उपहार बाँटने की बड़ी परंपरा है।

क्रिसमस का त्योहार (Christmas Festival)

सांता क्लाज़ रात के समय सभी के घरों में जाकर उनको उपहार बाँटता है खासतौर से बच्चों को वो मजाकिया उपहार देता है। बच्चे बड़ी व्याकुलता से सांता और इस दिन का इंतजार करते है। वो अपने माता-पिता से पूछते है कि कब सांता आयेगा और अंततः: बच्चों का इंतज़ार खत्म होता है और ढ़ेर सारे उपहारों के साथ सांता 12 बजे मध्यरात्रि को आता है।

इस दिन केक का बहुत महत्व होता है। लोग एक दूसरे को उपहार स्वरूप केक भी देते है और अपने यहां भोज पर आमंत्रित करते है। ईसाई लोग अपने घर में तरह -तरह के केक बनाते है। इस दिन लोग क्रिसमस के पेड़ को सजाते है, अपने दोस्त, रिश्तेदार और पड़ोसियों के साथ खुशियाँ मनाते है और उपहार बाँटते है। इस दिन की मध्यरात्रि को 12 बजे सेंता क्लाज हर एक के घर आते है और चुपचाप बच्चों के लिये उनके घरों में प्यारे-प्यारे उपहार रखते है। अगली सुबह ही अपनी पसंद के उपहार पाकर बच्चे भी बहुत खुश होते है। इस दिन सभी स्कूल, कॉलेज, विश्वविद्यालय, कार्यालय और दूसरे सरकारी और गैर-सरकारी संस्थान आदि बंद रहते है। पूरे दिन ढेर सारे क्रिया-कलापों द्वारा क्रिसमस अवकाश के रुप में लोग इसका आनन्द उठाते है।

लोग बड़े डिनर पार्टी का लुत्फ  उठाते है जिसे भोज कहते है। इस खास मौके पर ढ़ेर सारे लजीज़ व्यंजन, मिठाई, बादाम आदि बनाकर डाईनिंग टेबुल पर लगाते है। सभी लोग रंग-बिरंगे कपड़े पहनते है, नृत्य करते है, गाते है, और मज़ेदार क्रिया-कलापों के द्वारा कर खुशी मनाते है। इस दिन ईसाई समुदाय अपने ईश्वर से दुआ करते है, अपने सभी गलतियों के लिये माफी माँगते है, पवित्र गीत गाते है और अपने प्रियजनों से खुशी से मिलते है।

लगभग एक महीने पहले से ही क्रिश्चन इस त्योहार की तैयारियाँ करने लगते है। इस दिन पर घर, कार्यालय, चर्च आदि की सफाई करते है: पोताई करना और कागज तथा प्राकृतिक फूलों से अच्छे से सजाना, चित्र, दीवार पर ध्वज पट लगाना। आकर्षक दिखने के लिये बाजारों को भी सजाया जाता है और हम देख सकते है कि बाजार क्रिसमस कार्ड, सुंदर ग्लासेज़, उपहार, सीनरी, खिलौने आदि से भर जाता है। लोग अपने घरों के बीच में क्रिसमस के पेड़ को सजाते है और उसको ढ़ेर सारे उपहार जैसे कि चौकोलेट, कैंडिज़, गुब्बारे, गुड़ीया, चिड़ीया, फूल, लाइटें आदि से इसे चमकदार और सुंदर बनाते है।

भजन गाते है तथा अपने मित्र, सगे-संबंधियों, और पड़ोसियों में उपहारों का आदान-प्रदान करते है। इस दिन ये लोग एक बड़े भोज का आयोजन करते है जिसमें लजीज़ पकवानों से सभी का स्वागत किया जाता है। दावत के बाद सभी लोग गीत-संगीत पर झूमते है और रात में गाना गाते है। ये बहुत ही जोश और खुशी का उत्सव है जिसे पूरी दुनिया में मस्ती के साथ मनाया जाता है।

इस दिन ईसाई लोग भगवान से प्रार्थना करते है। प्रभु ईशा के सामने वो अपनी गलतीयों के लिये माफी माँगते है। अपने भगवान ईसा मसीह के गुणगान में लोग पवित्र भजन गाते है, बाद में वो अपने बच्चों और मेहमानों के लिये क्रिसमस के उपहार बाँटते है। इस दिन पर अपने मित्रों और रिश्तेदारों को क्रिसमस के कार्ड देने की परंपरा है। सभी क्रिसमस भोज के बड़े उत्सव में शामिल होते है और अपने पारिवारिक सदस्यों और मित्रों के साथ खुशबूदार पकवानों का लुफ्त उठाते है। बच्चे इस दिन का बहुत उत्सुकता से इंतजार करते है क्योंकि उनको ढेर सारे उपहार और चौकेलेट मिलते है। क्रिसमस का उत्सव स्कूल और कॉलेजों में एक दिन पहले 24 दिसंबर को मनाया जाता है, उस दिन बच्चे सांता क्लाज की ड्रेस या टोपी पहनकर स्कूल जाते है।
