First Grade Reading Skills | Letter Knowledge

Connection to reading.

Children must learn the names of the letters of the alphabet and the sounds of the letters. When they understand the connection between letters and their sounds, they will begin to understand that letters put together form words. This is the very foundation of reading.

For example, if we can say the sound of each of these letters: t + a + p, then we can blend them together to say “tap”.

Child's Reading Level | Family Reading Guides | Home Reading Helper

Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet and know the sounds of each letter. For example, the letter M says the sound “mmmmmm”.

Children's Reading Resource | Pre-K - 3rd Grade | Home Reading Helper

Why Is Letter Knowledge So Important?

Do i know the letter sounds teaching letter knowledge to your child, practice writing letters of the alphabet, why talking about the letters we see all around us prepares our child to read.

HOME ACTIVITIES

Focus on sounds.

If your child is still mastering their letter sounds, find moments throughout the day to check in and ask them about the sound a word starts with. If you’re at the park, ask “What sound do you hear in the beginning of “slide”? Ssss, you’re right! How about “park”? P, p, p!” These low-stress check ins help keep you informed about the letters that need more practice.

Pick a random letter in the alphabet. Find a food word that starts with this letter, like “t” while shopping at the grocery store. Take turns picking the letter.

Chalk Letters

Use sidewalk chalk to write an uppercase letter and have your child write the lowercase matching letter and tell you the sound it makes. If they struggle to write the right letter, show them how you write it and tell them it’s ok. Keep these games light and fun for your child; don’t show frustration or worry if they’re struggling. They’ll catch on as long as you keep practicing.

Pour rice or cornmeal in a plate or small, rimmed baking pan. Have kids trace a letter with their finger and say its name and sound. Gently shake the rice on the plate to “erase”. Make sure to show them the letter first so they can copy the shape.

Have your child trace an easy three letter CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) word like dot, tap, or cup in shaving cream. Spray shaving cream in the bathtub and have them write in the foam using their finger. Have them sound out the first letter sound.

The Guide to 1st Grade: Reading and Writing

Review reading and writing curricula for first grade, learn what to expect, and discover the books and activities you can use to support learning..

It feels like you were just buying your child’s first picture books, and already, it’s time for them to start 1st grade. But let’s be honest: Kids aren’t the only ones who get nervous about a new school year! That’s why we’ve created this 1st Grade Guide to make the leap easier than ever. Here, you’ll find all of the resources you need for your child to succeed in reading and writing, so you can spend less time researching and more time learning with your little one — and, naturally, planning that cute first-day-of-school snapshot.

First grade is packed with important and exciting transitions as children leave behind much of the play of preschool and kindergarten, and begin to develop more academic skills.

Your child will also go through a significant transition to more extensive learning. As your child adjusts, they may get tired at the end of the day or have trouble focusing as the day progresses — that’s normal! Just check with your child’s teacher on their progress, and work together to develop strategies if they're having trouble adjusting, especially at the beginning of the year.

Most importantly, prime your child for success by continuing the learning process at home with enriching books and activities that support what they're learning in class. When your first grader spends time learning new skills with you, it not only makes that time more valuable to them, but also helps them reach the milestones expected at this age. Here is everything you need to know about the exciting year of 1st grade, and the materials that will help your child thrive.

First Grade Reading Skills

Building reading skills is an essential part of a first grader’s learning process and academic success down the road. Even when students are not specifically learning “reading,” they are constantly using this skill to learn other subjects—which is why it’s crucial for your child’s success in all subjects. As first graders develop their reading comprehension, they will talk more about certain topics and gain a deeper understanding of what they read.

To build their reading skills, your first grader:

  • Recognizes the features of a sentence (for example: first words, capitalization, and ending punctuation).
  • Recognizes the spelling and sound of two letters that represent one sound, such as  th , ch , wh  (these are also known as digraphs).
  • Learns to read regularly spelled one-syllable words.
  • Understands how an “e” at the end of a word changes a vowel within the word.
  • Breaks up longer words into syllables in order to read them.
  • Reads grade-level words that have “irregular” spellings.
  • Knows the difference between and reads fiction texts and non-fiction texts with purpose and an understanding of the plot and important ideas and characters.
  • Talks about and answers questions about the text they read.
  • Reads texts aloud at an appropriate speed and with expression.
  • Compares different characters, events, or texts.
  • Understands the purpose of and uses common features in a book, such as headings, tables of contents, and glossaries.
  • Begins to read grade-appropriate poetry and identifies words and phrases that relate to emotions and the senses.

First Grade Reading Activities

Put on a Show : Read a favorite story or poem out loud as though it’s a play, using different voices for the character and the narrator to help your child practice pacing and expression. Your child can also read a dramatic book (like Giraffes Can't Dance ) to you!

Become Poets : Read small and simple poems together and talk about the feelings they convey. Next, try writing your own poems together about objects, people you know, or anything else you like!

Create Your Own Dictionary : As your child learns to read new words and understand the meaning of those words, keep track of them in your own personal dictionary. Your child can write them down, draw a picture to illustrate the word or its definition, or write a sentence using the word.

1st Grade Writing Skills

Once your child has mastered writing letters and begins to improve their spelling skills, they can begin to write longer pieces in a variety of genres. First grade is that magical time in which your child progresses from simply writing words to becoming a “writer,” and their spelling skills will improve in the meantime. Students also begin to use technology in 1st grade, specifically for writing and research. You can help by using the Internet and other technology at home with your child in an appropriate and supervised manner.

As with reading, your child will use writing throughout the day in a variety of subjects. For example, students may write about a math problem, explaining how they solved it, or write about a topic they learned in science or social studies. All of this work makes them a better writer—and learner—overall.

To build their writing skills, your first grader:

  • Writes a variety of texts including, opinion pieces, narratives, and explanatory/informational pieces.
  • Writes with structure, including an introductory sentence, supporting or accurate details, and some sense of closure.
  • Begins to use digital tools, including computers, to practice and “publish” writing.
  • Gathers information as a class, with the aid of a teacher, to answer a question or create a shared research or writing project.

First Grade Writing Activities

Write Your Own Stories : After your child experiences an important moment or event, ask them to write about it and illustrate it as though it is a story — and if they'd like, they can then share it with your family and friends!

Answer a Question : When your child asks a question, research the answer together using books, dictionaries, or computers (under your supervision). Then, work together to craft an informative poster or collage with the question and the answer, using both text and pictures to show what you learned.

Make a Family Magazine or Book : Task your first grader with illustrating a book using drawings and text to describe different family members or friends. Each person can have their very own page!

The Teaching Rabbit

The teaching rabbit's resources, literacy centers for first grade.

July 3, 2019 Melissa Freeman Primary , Sentences , Word Work , Writing 0

first grade literacy centers

Using literacy centers in your classroom is a great hands on way to help students build reading, writing, and word work skills every day. You may choose to run your centers while you are busy working with small guided reading groups or assessing individual learners. It is important to teach students how to use each center before having them work there on their own. Working through each center once as a class can give students a basic understanding of what they should be doing.

The literacy centers described below are best for Grade 1 students, although some can be used in Kindergarten or Grade 2 depending on the level of your students.

Beginning and Ending Sounds Literacy Center

beginning and ending sounds cards

These Beginning & Ending Sounds Cards (CVC words) are perfect for a word work center. Laminate them for your students to  use with dry erase markers.  They can make words by adding the beginning and ending letters.

Students can then copy the words they have made into their notebooks or use the recording sheet that is included to sort the words by their vowel sounds.

This center comes with 45 cards (9 cards for each short vowel sound).

Haason Reddick trade grades: Jets going for broke; Eagles avoid long-term gamble

Oct 16, 2022; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick (7) reacts after a defensive stop against the Dallas Cowboys during the second quarter at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles traded outside linebacker Haason Reddick to the New York Jets for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2026. The pick can become a second-rounder if Reddick records 10 sacks and plays 65 percent of the Jets’ defensive snaps in 2024.

Why they made the move

Reddick, who turns 30 in September, is in the final year of his contract and looking for a new deal, so there had been a looming possibility the Eagles would move him.

Although the Temple product had been a strong fit with the Eagles with 27 sacks in two years, it’s understandable why the Eagles aimed to get younger on a defense that struggled during their late-season swoon. A massive financial commitment could be considered a gamble for someone who’d play two or three games before turning 30. Not to mention, they just signed edge rusher Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million deal in free agency.

The Jets , of course, are going for broke with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in town. They also lost Huff in free agency and had an obvious need on the edge.

Reddick has been productive and reliable over the past four years with 50 1/2 sacks and only one missed game. It’ll also be a second homecoming of sorts for the New Jersey native, and his pedigree as a recent winner with the Eagles will be valuable as the Jets attempt to fulfill the franchise-altering expectations that came with Rodgers’ arrival a year ago.

Haason Reddick played twice as many snaps on early downs last season compared to former Jet Bryce Huff, generating 17 more pressures than him on such downs. Reddick was one of three players to record 6 or more pressures in 8 games in 2023 (M. Parsons, J. Allen). #TakeFlight https://t.co/2KcnJxkJ2W pic.twitter.com/07W9ekbKGn — Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) March 29, 2024

Jets trade grade: A-minus

Though the Jets have had some long-standing issues, there’s been no question about coach Robert Saleh’s ability to lead a defense since they began adding high-caliber talent a couple of years ago. Reddick should help in that cause.

This should be viewed as giving up a third-round pick. In an era when successful teams rotate waves of pass rushers, a 65 percent snap rate is more of a hope than a likelihood. If Reddick hits both benchmarks, though, it means he’ll have delivered a strong season, and a second-round price tag would be worth it.

The Jets would presumably still like to extend Reddick’s contract, but they didn’t surrender all leverage to the player by paying an exorbitant price, such as a first-round pick. If Reddick has a big season and leaves in free agency, he’ll figure into the Jets’ 2026 compensatory pick formula. If the trade doesn’t pan out and he leaves, it’d be hard to fault the aggressive approach for a proven commodity.

Some notable Haason Reddick stats: – He's played at least 74% of the snaps in each of the last four years. That might go down with #Jets . – Over last 4 years, ranks 4th among all defensive players in sacks (50.5), 11th in QB hits (86), 8th in TFL (51) and 9th in total pressures… — Zack Rosenblatt (@ZackBlatt) March 29, 2024

Eagles trade grade: B

Let’s look at this from a different perspective.

The Eagles knew they were at a crossroads with Reddick, so they got much younger by signing Huff away from the Jets. Huff, who turns 26 next month, is on an upward trajectory after a career-best, 10-sack season.

Then, they swung Reddick to the Jets and recouped a future second-day draft pick. That’s good business. I’m not trying to pretend this was part of general manager Howie Roseman’s elaborate long-term scheme, but he deserves credit for getting creative during an offseason when changes were necessary.

Letters to the Editor: Huntington Beach’s mayor as Trump’s VP? Residents say sure, we don’t want her here

Gracie Van Der Mark and Tony Strickland in a meeting.

• Show more sharing options

To the editor: My first thought after I spied Gustavo Arellano’s March 23 column ( “I know who Trump should pick for VP — and she’s right here in O.C.” ) was “Brilliant! Let her inflict her MAGA-ness on someone else!” As a lifetime resident of Huntington Beach I am weary of our mayor’s antics.

Arellano is spot on in his assessment of Van Der Mark’s Trumpian qualifications. Thrives on publicity? Check. Isn’t burdened by pesky facts or statistics when making decisions or statements? Check. Has a “My way or the highway” governing style? Check. Is dismissive of people or ideas counter to her own? Check. Is fond of sweeping generalizations? Check. Is more concerned with promoting personal ideology than being a consensus builder? Check. May use power to retaliate against those they deem not sufficiently loyal? Double check. (Just ask the three council members not in the mayor’s posse.)

Mayor Van Der Mark and three other council members ran for election as a team. They dubbed themselves “the Fab Four” but I call them “the Gang of Four.” Much like our former president, colleagues not in agreement with them often find themselves in diminished roles with little chance of having their ideas considered or talents utilized. They are ignored — along with any citizen who opposes the Gang of Four.

I agree with Mr. Arellano that Van Der Mark is a political soulmate for our indictment-ridden former president, but the thought of these two occupying the highest leadership positions in the country makes me shudder.

Mary Franklin, Huntington Beach

To the editor: While I am (relatively) certain that Gustavo Arellano was being facetious about Trump picking Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark as his vice president, as a 40-year resident of the city I am on my knees begging: Please take her! Take her far away from Huntington Beach, which she is ruining. Arellano mentions her racism, which seems to be a requirement for being a Trump supporter, but her desire to create an unrealistic, non-diverse, white-washed city where institutions such as the public library are things to be afraid of and managed out of existence I find even scarier. She and her fellow conservative council members do not listen to their constituents, at least not all of them. So, yes, please send her to Washington. Or anywhere else. Protect Huntington Beach!

Patricia Garza, Huntington Beach

To the editor: Gustavo Arellano’s suggestion that Gracey Van Der Mark is the best person to be Trump’s running mate made me happier than my antidepressants.

Huntington Beach, for those of us who live here, has become a nihilistic, “Twilight Zone” type of community. If only our City Council had been happy just fencing things (the beach, Central Park, medians of streets, etc.), but now they are going after our minds.

It’s useless to explain the value of freedom and democracy to our current City Council members who agree with this mayor. Intellectual freedom and access to information for all people of all ages is a nonstarter with them. It’s all about the money — so Trumpian.

I appreciate the coverage of Huntington Beach issues The Times and county-wide journalists provide, but perhaps a local newspaper would have alerted more residents to the danger these people posed and more would have voted in the last election. Now our library may be privatized and few people seem to understand what’s really happening.

Barbara Snider, Huntington Beach

To the editor: I have been a follower of Gustavo Arellano’s since his early days at OC Weekly and am now happy to see him writing for The Times. He has always kept his fingers on the pulse of Orange County and the cities within.

That is why I’m so glad to see he picked Huntington Beach as the subject of his March 23 column. I’ve lived most of my life in the neighboring city of Newport Beach. Newport has the same mix of rich and poor, Republicans and Democrats, but everyone seemed to get along pretty well. Controversial council meetings were usually about water quality in the bay or the placement of a new high-rise building. And Huntington has had its bad moments with skinheads and beach riots, but such moments couldn’t be blamed on the city government. When I moved to Huntington Beach about eight years ago, things seemed to operate about the same in both cities.

Things changed in 2023, when Gracey Van Der Mark and the new ultra-right council members were sworn in. Gustavo is right, the very first thing they did was stop the Huntington Beach Interfaith Council from giving the invocation before meetings. Council meetings have become chaotic, with many running past midnight. Citizen-oriented committees from local government have been eliminated. Now they are going to “explore” privatizing the city’s public library system, which means fewer books and a smaller staff. How much lower can they go? The bottom looks very deep.

FYI Guy: Active lifestyle, or something else?

My first thought in reading the statistics showing that San Juan County had the longest-lived population was our healthy lifestyle there. [“Life expectancy in Washington counties varies by as much as 11 years,” FYI Guy, March 18]

But I believe most of it is caused by another factor. I am 87 years old, several months older than the oldest, on average. Now I live in Anacortes. We moved here in 2018, after 30 years living on Obstruction Island, an island with no ferry service and a demanding lifestyle.

We left after my husband’s stroke in 2016. New priorities dictated the move. We live in a one-floor home on a cul-de-sac, three blocks from the hospital, one block from a county bus stop and 11 blocks from the town core. Most friends our age on the islands have also moved to retirement homes or other kinds of age-dictated arrangements.

I believe that is why San Juan Island’s aging population seems healthier — the medically at-risk older population leaves.

Caroline Buchanan, Anacortes
