Narayan Gopal Shrestha

When one tunes into the revered voice of the music prodigy Narayan Gopal, recognizing immediately the soft and somber textures, the mellow timbres, and the undulating vibrato of his voice, one becomes steeped in feelings of awe, astonishment, and intense longing.

Narayan Gopal’s songs aren’t just confined to older generations, every emerging musician, singer, or listener of all ages, equally appreciates the music genius’ heart-wrenching songs. Some sing along with great reverence, while others try to emulate his style into the new-age indie style pop-rock. Whichever way the Narayan Gopal songs might have resided in Nepalese heart it is irrefutable that the evergreen singer has thoroughly entertained and enthralled everybody with his impeccable musical talent.

Narayan Gopal Guruacharya, born into a Newar Chathariya Shrestha family in Kilagal Tole, Kathmandu, on  18 Asoj, 1996 B.S. (4 October, 1939 AD) was the second son of nine siblings of classical musician Asha Gopal Guruacharya (father) and Ram Devi Guruacharya (mother). The known names of the siblings, his six brothers, and four sisters are Manohar Gopal Guruacharya, Nanda Gopal Guruacharya, Ram Gopal Guruacharya, Laxman Gopal Guruacharya and Shanti Guruacharya. After his completion of School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in 2016 B.S, Narayan Gopal obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities from Tri-Chandra College.

According to his close friend Nagendra Thapa, Narayan Gopal had also learned wrestling and was very good at it, and was physically called a warrior ( pahalman ). Interested also in history, as many acclaims, he would have become a historian if not a singer. He was a great actor too and had acted for the role of a blind person in the drama “Tyag” written by Durgalal Shrestha in 2013 BS. He was in fact, according to his relatives, very good at mimicry too. Gopal was a big-time foodie and often liked cooking his own side dishes, like boar meat. He had a penchant for sour food, milk, and ghee. According to music researcher Prakash Sayamika, Narayan Gopal used to sit at Tundikhel, Kathmandu’s largest grass ground, and eat Nepali sweets like Gundapak and Pustakari.

Growing up in a musical family, Narayan was influenced by his father, a sitar maestro of his own time. He learned many musical instruments but was particularly keen on playing harmonium and a Hindustani percussion instrument called tabala . “Father was a teacher of musical instruments, and he had told Narayan dai to not go into vocals. But as we know he did not listen; as a rebel, dai went into vocals and garnered such unsurmountable level of fame and appreciation,” remembered Laxman Gopal Gurubacharya, Narayan Gopal’s youngest brother. While Narayan Gopal’s prodigious musical ability enabled him to render his voice to over 550 compositions of every possible genres life including modern songs, ballets, dance dramas, movies, and patriotic songs at various societal scenarios and stages of his life, his versatility as a singer was not limited to his vocals and was equally diversified in composing them too. Many melodious Nepali singers like Tara Devi and Phatteman Rajbhandari have sung some of Gopal’s finest compositions.

Narayan Gopal’s musical talent was first recognized by his friends, Manik Ratna Sthapit, who lived in the neighboring Pyukha Tole, and Prem Dhoj Pradhan, who lived in Bheda Singh Tole. The three friends would practice singing Hindi songs together at Manik Ratna’s house. Prem Dhoj and Manik Ratna recount that Narayan Gopal would always joke around and changed the Hindi lyrics into Nepali, sometimes damaging the melody of the songs for a comical effect. Narayan Gopal’s first public musical performance was during the 40th anniversary of Tri Chandra College where he played tabala, While his first teacher, father Asha Gopal Guruwacharya, Manik Ratna, and Prem Dhoj composed Gopal’s first song.

To further broaden his style, Gopal held discussions with his admirers, competitors, and critics, and in the process of the singer visited Darjeeling, India, in March 1965 where he met his long-time fan and future wife, Pemala Lama. There he also met another young musician Gopal Yonzon, to whom he was first introduced by Yonzon’s first love Madan Pradhan. The two were bound in the relation of special friends as mitjyus because both had “Gopal” in their names. With the partnership of this famous composer and lyricist, Narayan Gopal ventured into tragic love ballads which gave Narayan Gopal’s music a different dimension. Often remembered for his melancholic heart-rending songs that eased, soothed, and told the tale of pain that resonated with that of the listeners, Narayan Gopal was called “The King of Tragedy”.  The two Gopals were challenged to carve a new niche for Nepali music as famous Western musicians, like the Beatles and Bob Dylan and so on were entering and influencing the local ones. They were successful in confronting this influence and maintaining their popularity at its peak as they continued to create massively successful songs.

A similar association (like that with Gopal Yonzon) with other eminent singers and poets could be documented in Narayan Gopal’s life as he collaborated with famous poet Bhupi Sherchna, with whom he had a close affinity as friends. He sang Bhupi Sherchan’s lyrics like “Aljhechha Kyare Pachauri, timro Chiyako Buttama” , and “Maile Gayeko Geetma Timrai Hansilo Muhar Chha” , which became hit numbers. Similarly, Narayan Gopal’s partnership with influential Nepali poet, Ishwor Ballav gave hit numbers like “Duita Phool Deuralima, Sathai Rakhyaun jasto Lagchha” , “Mero Behoshi Aaaj, Mero Lagi Parda Bho”, and “Yo Kasto Byatha Ho” . Ishor Ballav’s lyrical poem written for Narayan Gopal gave him new heights in his career. Similar consistent collaboration with other established Nepali composers like Nati Kaji, Shiva Sankar, and Amber Gurung shone Narayan Gopal even more and he was known as the singer of intellect. The music prodigy had also sung for hit Nepali films like Manko Badha, Sindoor, Lahure, Chino, and many other dramas.

Narayan Gopal was the first singer in Nepali singing history to pass Radio Nepal’s voice test. He was taken there by his friends, Manik Ratna and Prem Dhoj. While other singers would sing Hindi songs for the test, he sang “Panchi Ko Pankha Ma Dharti Ko Diyo” penned by Dr. Ram Man Trishit and composed by Prem Dhoj for him. Narayan Gopal was employed as a mere instrumentalist at the Rashtriya Naach Ghar (National Dance Theater) and later rose to the post of manager ( hakim ). He also worked as the editor of a musical journal “Bageena” for its first three issues. He became the managing director of “Sanskritik Sansthan” and adviser to the Ministry of Communication and was also an associate professor at the “Lalit Kala Campus”, Nepal’s first Fine Arts Campus that pioneered the teaching of basic and advanced level courses in fine arts.

Narayan Gopal was honored with multiple awards accolades, like Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, Jagadamba Shree, Ratna Record award, Best Composition (Radio Nepal), and Best Singer (Radio Nepal) among many others, albeit many of them were awarded to him posthumously. However, the first-ever prize he received as The Best Musician was given by Radio Nepal in 2023 BS.

In the Honor of the Swor Samrat, the government has also built many statues throughout Nepal, such as one in Chakrapath, Kathmandu where flower garlands and red floral bouquets are offered to commemorate the 21st death anniversary event of Narayan Gopal adorn its vicinity. His statue was dismounted for a few months to facilitate water pipeline installation, it was reinstalled on the occasion of his death anniversary. Also to commemorate his unmeasurable contributions to the Nepali music industry, the Nepali month Mangsir 19 is marked as the memorial day of the singing legend.

During the twenty-eight years of his career, Narayan Gopal sang in eighteen movies and recorded more than 150 songs, being the epitome of music in the 50s, 60s, & 70s. Even after some three decades of his departure in 1990, he still remains the undisputed voice emperor. To this day, many of his keepsakes like instruments, precious awards, and recognitions that earned him the moniker of “Swor Samrat” remain safeguarded at his house at Maharajgunj by the Narayan Gopal Music Trust. The veteran artiste’s rich repertoire of timeless classics makes him one of the most unforgettable immortals in music history.

Narayan Gopal died of diabetes complications at 9:00 PM of 19 Mangsir, 2047 B.S. (5 December 1990) at the Bir Hospital, Kathmandu, at the age of 51.  His friends urged/requested him to quit smoking and drinking, he did quit drinking a few months but cigarettes, he continued until he died. He would smoke 25-30 sticks every day, according to his friends.

Narayan Gopal’s funeral procession turned out to be one of the saddest but biggest events in Nepali Music History. The sea of admirers: the fans, the actors, actresses, poets, singers, politicians took part in the procession. People wept their eyes out many couldn’t believe his untimely demise. The politicians Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Ganesh Man Singh also paid homage to the National gem.

“Today’s singers should sing for themselves rather than for others” stressed Narayan Gopal, whose honest and authentic persona could be seen rendered from his pure passion to make music, devoid of any falsity or deliberateness. These masterpieces are pure in the sense that he sang them only for the sake of singing, and not for commercial benefits. That is why Narayan Gopal’s legacy remains engraved deep into the hearts of every Nepali.

Legend Singer

Narayan Gopal Guruwacharya(In Nepali: नारायण गोपाल गुरूवाचार्य ) (October 4, 1939 – December 5, 1990) was a prominent popular singer and composer of Nepali music. He has been referred to as “Swar Samrat” (Nepali: स्वर सम्राट, meaning: Emperor of Voice) in Nepali music. He was also known as “Tragedy King.” His voice range allowed him to sing songs of every genre of Nepalese music. Often, his songs were orchestrated with the sitar, harmonium and flute. Later career After his short stay in Hetauda, Narayan Gopal returned to Kathmandu and managed to find a job in Rastriya Naach Ghar (National Dance Theater) with the help of his friends Manik Ratna and Janardan Sama. He had entered Naach Ghar as a mere instrumentalist, but he slowly rose to the post of a hakim (rector).

At this stage of his life, he found himself confronting a new generation of Nepali youths. Among the young musical talents of that time, his partnership with Dibya Khaling took off; and he started lending his voice to Khalings compositions, thus initiating another phase of his singing career. Songs like सँधै नै म हाँसे तिमीलाई रुवाई, मायाको आधारमा सम्झौता नै हुन्छ, बिपना नभइ helped to revive his popularity. During this stage he started to collaborate with new breed of songwriters such as Khyetra Pratap Adhikari, Kali Prasad Rijal, Norden Rumba, Dinesh Adhikari, and Bishwambhar Pyaukurel, while his relationship with his old collaborators was neglected. Among the composers of the new generation, he collaborated with the likes of Sambhujit Baskota, Bhupendra Rayamajhi, and Shubha Bahadur. In his late stage of career, he lent his considerable prestige to launch the career of many upcoming musicians. As such, he was willing to compromise his artistry and sing weak songs by new composers and songwriters. He also sang in film songs.

In total his career spanned twenty-eight years, during which he sang in eighteen movies and recorded more than one hundred and fifty-seven songs.

Death Narayan Gopal died from complications of diabetes on December 5, 1990 (19 Mangsir, 2047 B.S.) in Bir Hospital, at 9 p.m. in Kathmandu, at the age of fifty-one. He had no children. He has six brothers and four sisters.

Narayan Gopal: Some unknown stories of the iconic man

Nasana Bajracharya

“Ankha  chhopi  narou  bhani  bhannu  parya  chha … Mutumathi  dhunga  rakhi  hasnu  parya  chha…”

There would be hardly anyone in Nepal who does not know the lyrics of the song or the man behind the scenes with his magical voice. Narayan Gopal is a name that resonates in most of most music lovers in Nepal, and many of them still listen to his songs with the same adoration. Even after some three decades of his death, he is still a popular icon for Nepal.

Yet, there are only a handful of people who knew the Swar Samrat closely.

Narayan Gopal was talented and famous in his musical endeavours, no doubt, but he was equally infamous and landed in many controversies too. But those close to him say many of them were either speculation or hearsay. Here, we discuss some unknown stories about him as shared by a few people close to him.

narayan gopal parents

Narayan Gopal Gurubacharya (also spelt Guruwacharya) was the second eldest son born to father Aasha Gopal and mother Ram Devi Gurubacharya on October 4, 1939. He had eight siblings including five brothers and three sisters.

As he grew up in a musical family, he was influenced by his father, a sitar maestro of his own time. Growing up, he learned many musical instruments but was particularly popular for playing harmonium and tabala.

“Father was a teacher of musical instruments, and he had told Narayan dai (elder brother) to not go into vocals [of modern genre]. But as we know he did not listen; as a rebel, [Narayan] dai went into vocals and garnered such unsurmountable level of fame and appreciation,” remembers Laxman Gopal Gurubacharya, Narayan Gopal’s youngest brother.

Narayan Gopal’s closest of friends, Manik Ratna, Prem Dhoj Pradhan , Gopal Yonjan, Bhoj Raj Sharma and Nagendra Thapa played key roles from recognising his melodic voice to getting him into the singing genre full time.

“Father was not happy that dai was singing and used to scold him so much, even restricting him into the house at times. But, he used to sneak out and go for musical practice with his friends. If he came home late, our father would not give him food and lock him in his room. But, he was loved by our mother. She would sneak in food to dai in a basket, with a rope, from one window to his window below,” remembers Laxman Gopal.

Other than being a musical genius, Narayan Gopal was well known for his love for food. “He was a true foodie. If he wanted to eat something, he would buy the ingredients and even cook for himself. He also loved occasional drinking too. And because of his food habits, dai was not that popular in gatherings.”

A family man

narayan gopal old photos (3)

Laxman Gopal is 15 years younger than Narayan Gopal. “Given the age difference, I got to spend much less time with him in our family home. Dai moved out of the house when he was 30. But, he never ignored his responsibility towards us or the family. And I was close to him, in fact, he played a key role in making my career and making me into what I am today.”

“In 1978 , father passed away. At that time, dai was working at Naach Ghar [of Jamal] and would always send us a portion of his salary. He sponsored my and my siblings’ education. When I came of age, I started working at Rastriya Banjiya Bank, but when I left that job, he gave that unemployed boy some work at Naach Ghar and made me [financially] independent. I owe a great deal of my life to him,” shares Laxman Gopal.

narayan gopal and pemala lama

Just like the depth of romanticism in his evergreen songs, Narayan Gopal was a person full of such feelings too. “Not many know how romantic dai was. Everyone knows of his love for bhauju, Pemala Lama, whom he met in Darjeeling. But what people do not know is he went to Darjeeling because of another love interest,” Laxman Gopal reveals, “He had gone there to woo a girl. But, due to some circumstances, he broke up and instead met bhauju [sister-in-law] there. They were inseparable from there.”

“When he came back to Nepal with Pemala, father was not happy. Being from a local Newa family of that time, our father was strict and did not approve of their (intercaste) marriage. But, he stood by bhauju and left home. They went from one place to another, first to Pokhara, then Hetaunda, then Bhagwanpur, Thamel and then to Maharajgunj that many know today.”

Misunderstood by many

write a short biography of narayan gopal

Narayan Gopal is arguably one of the best and most popular singers of all time in Nepal. Yet during his lifetime and even after his death, the name surely landed in a number of controversies and misunderstandings.

According to Raj Kumar Shrestha, a violin teacher and the caretaker of Narayan Gopal Music Trust in Maharajgunj, “It is said that Narayan Gopal was very punctual as a person. So, if anyone would not come on time, he would just get up and leave. Many translated this as his arrogance and were dismayed by his behaviour.”

“Also a foodie, he would rather eat on his own than be with picky eaters. So this trait of his was also misunderstood by people,” adds Shrestha. He, however, expresses he did not get to be in the presence of Narayan Gopal but since he got involved with the trust, he has learned many stories of the great singer, his personality and his vision.

On the other hand, locals of Kilagal, where Narayan Gopal’s family house is, also remember him as a distant person. Rabindra Man Shakya, one of the locals, say, “He did not have many close friends here in the locality; he was more familiar and close with people from Bhedasingh, Janabahal, and Pyukha.”

Admitting this though, Laxman Gopal says it was only because of musical involvement and not because of his personality or personal grudge. “He used to play and sing bhajan at Janabahal , and Prem Dhoj Pradhan was from Pyukha, so they were his connections.”

Maybe one of the most misunderstood stories about the singer is his alleged relationship with the late Queen Aishwarya Rajya Laxmi Shah. “King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya appreciated good art and music. Dai went to the palace to play sometimes, but there was nothing between him and the queen as alleged,” Laxman Gopal says, “If there was, we as family members would have known that. So, it is nothing but hearsays and people misunderstanding his involvement.”.

narayan gopal music trust

With time, the number of people listening to Narayan Gopal has decreased. The cassette-based distribution of his songs has plunged too. But what Narayan Gopal achieved in his lifetime is a rare achievement and he will live on with his songs.

Yet somehow the Swar Samrat did not get enough institutional or national recognition while he was alive. “The title Swar Samrat was given to him by the people [by his close friend Bhupi Sherchan ] and not the state,” adds Shrestha.

Also, many of the recognitions were given to him after his death. Shrestha says, “It is understandable as, until his death, there were not many award functions like today. So, only after Narayan Gopal passed away did he get the recognition.” Interestingly he also could not collect the award while he was alive.

At his house in Maharajgunj, the Narayan Gopal Music Trust and his wife, Pemala , have collected many keepsakes of the iconic singer including the instruments he used, his personal belongings, old photos and a number of plaques and awards the singer got. But sadly, they fill up in just one room and that is all that is left of the iconic singer. They are all looked after by the trust that was established as per his wish in 1990, the same year the singer took his last breath at Bir Hospital.

raj kumar shrestha violin teacher

Maybe the only thing that is still continued of Narayan Gopal’s legacy is the violin classes that Shrestha teaches at the trust. “It was his vision. He wanted to give students a place to learn violin as it was rare back then. So continuing that, even today, I teach a few eager students here [in Mahargunj].”

Most of us know Narayan Gopal through his songs, here’s getting to know the legendary singer through his friends.

Swor Samrat” Narayan Gopal Gurubacharya is considered one of the greatest singers Nepal has produced. Born on October 4, 1939, he sang over 500 songs before his demise on December 5, 1990, due to diabetes and chronic renal failure. Four associates from his past recount their first meeting with the “Tragedy King” and reveal how his personality metamorphosed over the years.

Narayan Gopal’s house was next to Ram Man’s and he used to visit all the time. I remember him wearing short shorts. He was 3 or 4 years older than me but everyone called him “Sanu”. He used to play tabla and was also a great mimic. He impersonated the news presenters of All India Radio and imitated the singers as well. He was a jolly person, he liked making people laugh. But, at the same time, he was arrogant too. He didn’t present himself well with people he didn’t know. His arrogance did not fade away but he certainly knew how to utilize it.

After being friends with Gopal Yonzon, he started associating more with the Darjeeling group. I believe this had a positive consequence. He interest in literature grew and his song selection improved in a critical way. He started associating with literary figures and was influenced by poets. With this came a depth in his music and lyrics. This also meant there was a change in his personality. When I met him later, there was a certain gravity to his character. He wasn’t jolly like earlier and there was a refinement to his arrogance, if that makes any sense.

A few months before he died,  Prem Dhoj Pradhan, Nati Kaji, Shivashankar and I visited him. He was really happy to see us. He was jovial but we could feel something was wrong. He loved to eat and so, before we left, he said he would invite us for some thalthalay maasu some day. That was the last time we met, or at least, the last time we met when he was still able to talk. This is also, incidentally, my favourite memory of Narayan Gopal.

Prem Dhoj Pradhan is a legendary singer and childhood friend of the “Swor Samrat”. “Timro Jasto Mutu” is one of his favorite Narayan Gopal songs.

Two years later, Dr Ram Man Trishit started a group called Nava Kala Pariwar which I was a part of. Narayan Gopal  lived next door and was always over. The purpose of the Pariwar was to go to different toles once a month where 5 or 6 of us sang for an hour. Narayan used to play tabla but was too shy to sing. At Ram Man’s house, however, he used to sing on request while I played the tabla. This is how we became friends.

Narayan was particularly fond of the Indian singer, Manna Dey. He was a simple, genuine, good-humored person. If he made a mistake, he was always ready to apologize. However, he didn’t let anyone take advantage of him. I admired that quality. This is one of the reasons why he was one of the first people to take up the issue of royalty with Radio Nepal. Later, we used to meet occasionally. A few months before he died, I met him at Radio Nepal, sitting beside a tiny pond, smoking a cigarette. His feet were swollen. He told me he had quit alcohol but couldn’t quit cigarettes. He smoked around 25-30 sticks a day. In fact, I used to tell him to quit or at least control his drinking from time to time. He always nodded but never replied. The last time I met him was when he was in the hospital. He didn’t talk, just shook his head. He died the next day.

Ratna Shamsher Thapa is a noted poet and lyricist. Of the 25 or so songs Narayan Gopal and him worked on together, only 10 have been found.

I first met Narayan Gopal at Tri Chandra College. He was a classmate of mine. We started working together in 2016 BS for a function celebrating Tri Chandra’s anniversary. “Swarga Ki Rani” was one of the first songs we collaborated on. The event went on for 5 days and on every single day, people kept requesting “Swarga Ki Rani”. It was after this that he came into prominence. Some time later, after getting a contract with Radio Nepal, he asked me if I could write some lyrics for him. I agreed. He then signed a six-song contract with Indreni Records. All of them featured my lyrics, including “Swarga Ki Rani”. And all of them were superhits.

Narayan Gopal was a fun, friendly person and our combination worked well together. As for his skills with music, he was a great composer and had incredible range. I sometimes used to joke and tell him to add more keys to his harmonium. Another admirable quality was that he was always looking to do something new. We used to bunk classes to go to his place and work on songs. He was not hackneyed; he had a different vision. I think he was pretty clever in that he didn’t let his music stagnate, unlike a lot of his peers. He worked with different people and experimented and that’s what contributed to his success.

We drifted apart when he started working with Gopal Yonzon. People have speculated but nothing really went wrong - we just stopped talking. See, I have a reciprocal nature. I don’t give anyone the upper hand. If people think that Narayan Gopal is the sole reason for my success, I want them to know that I am still on top when it comes to my field. We broke off our relationship 50 years ago but I am still here.   Peter Karthak is a journalist and a musician. He spent many an evening in groups with Narayan Gopal at a ‘tharra pasal’ in Ason but they never drank together.

I first met Narayan Gopal in Darjeeling in 1962, when we were both students of Amber Gurung. Hillians, the band I was in, was very popular then and, seeing our potential, Mr Gurung asked us to perform for Narayan Gopal, who was visiting. He invited us because Nepali songs at that time, funded by King Mahendra, had become really popular, thereby overshadowing the music of Darjeeling where we lacked financial support. Mr Gurung had a bit of an inferiority complex because of this so he wanted us to show Narayan Gopal what we were capable of. That was our first encounter. We wanted the entire band to perform but we couldn’t, so it was just me playing one guitar with some harmonized vocals. We played our song “Mayalu Mayalu” and then he requested some Western rock as well. We complied by playing “PS. I Love You” and “I Saw Her Standing There” by the Beatles. According to Mr Gurung’s instructions, we showed him how we operated musically in a modern way in Darjeeling.

He was a quiet personality. Unlike a cosmopolitan society like Darjeeling, he was from Kathmandu which was socially more suppressed. We couldn’t understand his Newari accent laden Nepali and he didn’t have good English either. He was a bit moody as well.

We became closer when I moved to Kathmandu. My wife’s brothers were friends of his and he used to treat her like a sister. Personally, I don’t agree with the title “Swar Samrat”. There were far greater singers but, yes, he did have a great range. I also played on a few of his special recordings. It was during one of these sessions in 1976 that I last met him. It was also Narayan Gopal’s last recording at Radio Nepal. He never went back due to internal political disagreements. This was also when I learned that Narayan Gopal had stopped talking to Gopal Yonzon and that their partnership had been broken forever.

In memory of legendary singer Narayan Gopal

write a short biography of narayan gopal

Narayan Gopal, a brilliant personality in the field of Nepali music , passed away on 2047 BS but he is still beloved by the Nepalis even now. His rich melodious voice and meaningful songs are still a big hit today. While there was a huge dominance of Hindi songs in Nepal, Gopal played an important role in creating the identity of Nepali songs.

While his music made the audience happy, his nature was not suitable for the audience as he used to sing according to his mood. In some cases, there are stories of disputes with the audience and leaving the stage in the middle of his performance.

Born in Kathmandu, Narayan Gopal's father was involved in classical music and he also wanted his son do the same. Although Narayan Gopal went to India to study classical music , he turned to modern music. The veteran singer's popularity was growing day by day after he entered the music industry. At that time, the only radio station in Nepal "Radio Nepal" played his song every day. Almost all the songs he sang were hits.

He had an interracial marriage with Pemala Lama, a young woman from Darjeeling, India, for which he had to leave his home. He also became a geography teacher at Amar Singh School in Pokhara for a living and before building a house in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, they were living in Narasimha Chowk in Thamel. After the death of him and his wife, a foundation has been set up in his private house. The couple had no children.

Narayan Gopal was a skilled singer and a good musician. He also worked as a music teacher in various educational institutions. He even had had the opportunity to work as the General Manager of Cultural Corporation for a few year however he was accused of taking away the job opportunity from his friend. He also worked as an editor for a music magazine called Bagina for a few years.

Besides his love for music, it is said that he used to go to Dasharath Rangasala Stadium regularly to watch football and loved to play chess. He also worked as an expert in the Ministry of Communications after 2046 BS.

It is reported that he died due to excessive consumption of alcohol and cigarettes. And his death was a big tragedy to all of his fans as thousands of people turned to pay their respect at Pragya Bhawan, Kamaladi where his body was kept. Never before had so many people been present when an artist died.

The area where he resided now is named after him ' Narayan Gopal Chowk '. His statue is placed at the top of the crossroads and even though he is not with us today, Narayan Gopal still lives through his songs.
