Frequently Asked Quesions

What’s the difference between the dnp and phd programs.

Northeastern offers two different doctoral degrees in nursing: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The PhD is a research-oriented degree, while the DNP is practice-oriented. Nurses interested in leadership might be interested in the DNP, whereas those interested in becoming nurse scientists would be a good fit for the PhD program.

What financial support is available for students?

A select number of competitive Graduate Assistantships are available for doctoral students. Graduate Assistantships cover tuition and include a stipend in exchange for working 20 hours/week as a research or teaching assistant.

NOTE: Graduate Assistantships are awarded each academic year.

Can I transfer credits towards the program ?

You may be able to transfer in up to 9 credits that have not been previously used towards another degree and were taken at the graduate level for a grade of B or better. Students must receive approval from the program director prior to transferring courses and must be enrolled in the program in order to begin the transfer process.

More information about Northeastern University’s transfer policy can be found in the  Bouve Transfer Policy.

Can I attend the program on a part-time basis ?

Full-time or part-time enrollment is available. Students who attend full-time complete the degree in five continuous semesters (21 months).

Students who attend part-time usually complete the degree in three years . Students must consult with the financial aid office to assure PT status is acceptable for loan eligibility . All students (full-time or part-time) must take the NRSG7100 Leadership in Advanced Nursing Practice course as the first course which is offered in the Fall.

Can I speak with faculty in the PhD program that share my research interests ?

Yes, we would be happy to put you in touch with our faculty. Please send your query along with a description of research interests so that you can be appropriately matched to:

Doctor of Nursing Practice: Nurse Practitioner Online DNP

Preparing nurse practitioners for excellence.

Nurses with a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) degree are prepared to serve as clinical leaders and integral members of the healthcare team. Their expertise in quality improvement and systems leadership influences healthcare systems, health policy, and healthcare outcomes for individuals, families, and underserved populations.

Expanding upon these skills, our program provides students the choice to specialize in Adult Gerontology Primary Care or Psychiatric Mental Health to further impact the healthcare system and patient care.

The UMass Dartmouth online DNP program prepares nurse practitioners to practice at the highest level of care. DNP-prepared nurse practitioners learn to:

  • transform patient care through interdisciplinary collaboration, population-focused and evidence-based health interventions, and measurement of the outcomes of these interventions at both the individual and community levels
  • work with increasingly diverse populations and complex healthcare systems
  • be the future nurse leaders who advance nursing and healthcare practices in southeastern Massachusetts, the Commonwealth, and beyond.

Online, laboratory, and clinical experiences are structured to expand the skills and grow the confidence of the student as advanced practice nurse practitioners and nurse leaders. The support and collaboration of community partners—both clinicians and health care agencies—are essential components of this program.

Doctor of Nursing Practice: Nurse Practitioner curriculum

UMass Dartmouth offers three pathways to the DNP. Each track is offered asynchronously online to help you manage your education and life's demands. All classes are attended 100% remotely except for the one on-campus day each semester.

BS-DNP pathways

The BS-DNP pathways are for students who hold a bachelor's degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree with an associates in nursing. Students whose undergraduate major is non-nursing will take a transition (GAP) course. All students complete 63-66 credits that include over 1,000 hours of clinical practice. In addition, students complete a scholarly project that translates research into practice and measures the effectiveness of this intervention in both health outcomes and cost effectiveness. The BS-DNP may be completed in 4-years by attending full-time or 5-years part-time.

  • The Adult Gerontology Primary Care track will lead the transformative reform of health systems to achieve and maintain safe clinical practice environments; promote health, wellness and high quality patient care; and translate research into innovative practices that improve health outcomes and contain health care costs to both patients and society. Adult Gerontology NPs care for patients ages 12 years or older.
  • The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track prepares nurses to provide care to psychiatric patients across the lifespan.
  • Your RN license must be from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, your permanent (home) residence must be in listed states, and faculty-supervised clinical hours must occur in these states as well.

The DNP coursework includes translation research methods, theory, health policy, population health, informatics, systems leadership, leadership residencies, and a scholarly project to achieve the goals for the DNP and to meet national accreditation and certification standards. Nurses who earn the Adult Gerontology Primary Care or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner DNP at UMass Dartmouth will have completed the required coursework and clinical experiences for certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Post Master's DNP track

The Post-MS DNP plan prepares certified NPs with the highest level of education in nursing practice. A 27-30-credit, the Post MS-DNP program is available for nurses who hold an MS in Nursing and certification as an APRN. Post MS-DNP students complete 27-30 credits with a focus on advanced practice, leadership, and innovation. Students also complete a project that translates research into practice, emphasizing implementation, analysis, and dissemination of findings. This program is completed in less than two years time.

Alumni achievements

The UMass Dartmouth graduate nursing program opened in the late 1980s and has produced more than 250 graduates who work in southeastern Massachusetts and beyond. In 2007, the PhD in Nursing admitted its first cohort of students and has grown steadily.

The BS-DNP program positions the graduates of UMass Dartmouth to meet certification criteria as an adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner.

Many graduates continue their affiliation with the College of Nursing & Health Sciences by serving as preceptors, mentors, clinical instructors, and guest lecturers for our students, including:

  • Dr. Mary McCurry, Professor, Adult-Gerontology Track Coordinator, and a graduate of the former Adult Nurse Practitioner track of the MS program
  • Dr. Margaret Rudd-Arieta, DNP Faculty, Residency Site Coordinator, and a graduate of the Post MS-DNP program

News  GUIDANCE FOR NURSING PRACTICE BY GRADUATES AND STUDENTS IN THEIR LAST SEMESTER OF NURSING PROGRAMS

Please see the following guidance for nursing practice by graduates and students in their last semester of nursing education programs. This authorization to practice is intended as an interim plan to allow recent graduates and senior students to work while they prepare for and take the NCLEX examination and apply for licensure.

Guidance for Nursing Practice by Graduates and Students in Their Last Semester of Nursing Education Programs

On April 20, 2024, Governor Maura Healey signed into law the  Fiscal Year 2024 Supplemental Budget Act (Chapter 88 of the Acts of 2024) which states:

An individual who graduated from a registered nursing or practical nursing program approved by the board or who is a senior nursing student attending the last semester of a registered nursing or practical nursing program approved by the board may practice nursing; provided, that: (i) the individual is employed by or providing health care services at the direction of a licensed health care facility or a licensed health care provider; (ii) the individual is directly supervised while providing health care services; and (iii) the employing licensed health care facility or licensed health care provider has verified that the individual is a graduate of a registered nursing or practical nursing program approved by the board or that the individual is a senior nursing student attending the last semester of a registered nursing or practical nursing program approved by the board. The board shall issue guidance to implement this section that shall include guidance regarding the appropriate supervision of nursing students.

Chapter 88 of the Acts of 2024 authorizes graduates of an approved nursing program and individuals who are nursing students attending the last semester of an approved nursing program to practice nursing prior to obtaining licensure as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.  This authorization to practice is intended as an interim plan to allow recent graduates and senior students to work while they prepare for and take the NCLEX examination and apply for licensure.

The Board of Registration in Nursing and Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality are issuing this guidance as required to implement the legislation and clarify the responsibilities of graduates, students, licensed healthcare facilities, [1] and licensed healthcare providers.

Nothing in this guidance shall supersede specific requirements applicable to health care settings regarding nurse staffing and supervision.

Graduates and Students in their Last Semester

In order to practice under the authorization of Chapter 88 of the Acts of 2024, a graduate or student in their last semester:

  • Must have graduated from a board approved nursing education program within one year of the hire date or be a student currently enrolled in their last semester of a board approved nursing education program.
  • A list of licensed healthcare facilities is located here:  https://www.mass.gov/orgs/division-of-health-care-facility-licensure-and-certification
  • Licensure of healthcare providers may be verified here:  https://checkahealthlicense.mass.gov/
  • May not practice under this authorization, prior to obtaining a nursing license, for more than one year from the date of hire. The graduate may not practice under this authorization if they receive a failing score on the NCLEX examination.
  • May not represent themselves to be a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.

Responsibilities of Licensed Healthcare Facilities and Licensed Healthcare Providers

In order to allow a graduate or student in their last semester to practice under the authorization of Chapter 88 of the Acts of 2024, a licensed healthcare facility or licensed healthcare provider shall:

  • Verify the individual is a graduate of a board approved registered nursing program or practical nursing program or is a student in their last semester of a board approved registered nursing or practical nursing program.
  • The licensed healthcare facility or licensed healthcare provider must obtain independent verification and/or official documentation from the nursing education program. It is not sufficient for a licensed healthcare facility or licensed healthcare provider to rely on an individual’s representation of their educational status.
  • A list of board approved nursing education programs is located here:   https://www.mass.gov/doc/approved-registered-nurse-practical-nurse-programs-PDF/download
  • Not allow a graduate or student to practice nursing under Chapter 88 of the Acts of 2024 without obtaining licensure as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse for more than one year.
  • Provide nursing graduates and students with an orientation to the patient care environment that aligns with the individual student academic preparation and competencies.
  • Provide nursing graduates and students with policies that support their practice in the clinical setting where they are assigned.
  • Ensure that patients are informed that such individuals are nursing graduates or students.
  • Provide direct supervision to nursing graduates and students.
  • Direct supervision includes but is not limited to the supervising licensed nurse being physically present in the health care practice setting and readily available where nursing students and graduate nursing students are practicing.
  • Direct supervision includes but is not limited to the supervising licensed nurse being physically present in the health care practice setting and readily available where graduates and students are practicing.
  • Graduates and students must practice under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, performing tasks within the scope of practice of the supervising nurse of equal or higher educational preparation.
  • Graduates and students must seek assistance from the supervising nurse immediately when they encounter patient care situations that are beyond their competency and level of academic preparation.
  • Graduates and students may not be assigned tasks that are beyond their competency and level of academic preparation, or that are outside the scope of practice of the supervising nurse of equal or higher educational preparation.

In addition, the licensed healthcare facility should establish and maintain written policies and procedures, consistent with this guidance and applicable facility licensure regulations, regarding the graduates and students practicing nursing at their facilities, which include a process for verification, appropriate supervision, patient consent, and promotes quality care.
