Though women have been fighting for their rights for many generations, many types of gender discrimination persist in our society. Let’s explore the many different reasons why gender discrimination can occur at work and what effects it may have on individuals so that we can put changes in place which will prevent this from progressing.

The main and frequent gender discrimination takes places during the hiring process.

Getting a job can be one of the most stressful situations for many adults. Gender has a major influence on what job we hold. When we think of construction workers, presidents, CEOs and police officers we think of men while being a nurse, teacher and flight attendant we perceive it as a female’s job (Cundiff and Vescio 3). It is difficult for a female to get a job as a construction worker, culture norms made it seem improper for a female to work in this field. Having this job would require hard labor, which many men believe they are the only ones who can do it effectively. As for men, if they did a job that was mostly female-dominated suck as nursing, the public would perceive them as weak, and not “manly” enough (Settles and O’Conner 7). Employers are reluctant to hire a certain gender based on the job description. These continuing gender stereotypes often can inhibit females in achieving the higher status/position jobs.

Gender discrimination can occur in many types of job roles/positions. For example, males hold more leadership positions than females. “Women comprise 66% of U.S workforce, yet only 21% hold middle management positions, and a mere 15% are at senior management level” (Sipe 2). Women are being discriminated against and don’t hold a larger amount management level because they are perceived to be weak and unable to work by their male counterpart (Crofts and Coffey 1). There are many unjust situations women experience resulting in fewer opportunities. 

Females have to face more issues than men, like having children and taking care of the family. In some cases, women have to put their job on hold to take a maternity leave and take a couple of months off from work, while men are free and can get a greater chance of a promotion (Flanagan 2). Women have to work twice as hard than men so they can prove they’re able to the same as them. Having all these obstacles can make females feel it’s impossible to achieve a role or a job because of there gender resulting in them giving up.” University women in male-dominated academic fields were more likely to consider changing their major and that they continued to perceive gender-based obstacles in their fields” (Sipe 2). If females aren’t given an equal opportunity to achieve a higher position, it will result in them getting paid less.

Another form of discrimination women face in the workplace is the wage gap. The wage gap is a major controversy brought up in the workplace. At a young age, we were taught that men go out and work while women stayed home and took care of the family. American women have been battling for equal pay for many decades, the Equal Pay Act was to end the idea of men earning more the females based on sex. Although the wage gap between men and females improved we can still see some discrimination against women. For a very long time, it has become a norm that men earn more the women. 

According to U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, women earned 81 cents to every dollar men earned (Tufarolo 5). Women are getting paid less for the same workmen are doing. It is highly likely if a male and female had the same education and some job position that the men would get paid more. This can cause many dilemmas for singles mothers taking care of a child. Women have to earn enough money to take care of monthly bills and still have enough money to buy groceries (Fogel 2). Not only is the gender gap affecting the way they take care of the loved ones, but it also affects there retirement plan. If men are earning more than females, men would have a larger margin to save up for retirement (Manuel 6). A certain gender should not influence the amount of money one should make. The amount of education acquired and skills someone has should be the reason why they get paid more. Some females might not choose a certain job even if it pays more because of the fear of being sexually harassed.

Gender discrimination can also lead to sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment can come in two forms, quid pro quo, and hostile work environment. Quid pro quo is when you are put in a tough situation where you have to exchange something to receive something, most people know it has “this for that “. women are told to do a sexual favor for a promotion or a raise (Sipe 3). The other version is a hostile work environment where an employer might make an inappropriate sexual comment or unwanted touching. This type of sexual harassment can turn into something serious like sexual assault. Women are traumatized and frightened to every report it. Females are hesitant to come forward and report this type of sexual harassment for many reasons. The first reasons maybe of shame, victims of sexual harassment feel violated and exposed while being at the mercy of another person (Burner 1). They often start to blame themselves for the sexual assault and convincing themselves not to report it.

The second reason is that victims are in denial (Burner 3). Many victims refuse to accept that the harassment they experienced was assault. They convince themselves it wasn’t a big deal. Some victims might even convince themselves they were the only ones victimized and don’t come forward until other victims do. The result of denial and hopelessness can lead to depression. The third reason can be the fear of consequences they will face if they come forward with the sexual harassment or assault (Burner 5). This is one of the biggest reasons why females workers don’t speak out. They feel that if they speak out, they can lose their job, not be promoted, be seen as an agitator, won’t acquire another job or even fear for there safety.

Although laws such as the women’s rights, equal pay act, and civil rights act have extremely improved and narrowed the glass ceiling, the fights for women’s rights is not over. In today’s society, we can see that women are still being mistreated. They are being discriminated against because of their gender. Women receive fewer job offers than men, they receive lower pay, they don’t hold as much management positions compared to men and are being sexually harassed in the workplace. Women should not have to fight for their rights, again and again, the laws placed to protect all workers rights should be consistently enforced. Discrimination is totally unacceptable in today’s society. We must change the united way we think of women and how we treat them. We need to move forward together and change as a society so that no female worker suffers from gender discrimination in the future.

Gender Inequality in India

As per the World Economic Forum’s gender gap ranking, India stands at rank 108 out of 149 countries. Aug. 18 marks the 100-year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women in the United States the right to vote. As this milestone approaches, about half of Americans (49%) say granting women the right to vote has been the most important milestone in advancing the position of women in the country, according to a Pew Research Center study. And while many Americans say the last decade has seen progress in the fight for gender equality, a majority say the country still hasn’t gone far enough in giving women equal rights with men. 

Here are some key takeaways from  the report , which was based on a nationally representative survey of 3,143 U.S. adults conducted online from March 18-April 1, 2020.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand Americans’ views of the current state of gender equality and the advancement of women around the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote. For this analysis, we surveyed 3,143 U.S. adults in March and April 2020, including an oversample of Black and Hispanic respondents. The adults surveyed are members of the Ipsos Public Affairs KnowledgePanel, an online survey panel that is recruited through national random sampling of residential addresses and landline and cellphone numbers. KnowledgePanel provides internet access for those who do not have it and, if needed, a device to access the internet when they join the panel. To ensure that the results of this survey reflect a balanced cross section of the nation, the data are weighted to match the U.S. adult population by gender, age, education, race and ethnicity and other categories. The survey was conducted in English and Spanish.

Views on how far the country has come on gender equality differ widely by gender and by party

A majority (57%) of adults say the U.S. hasn’t gone far enough when it comes to giving women equal rights with men.  Assessments of the country’s progress vary by gender and political party. Women (64%) are more likely than men (49%) to say that the country hasn’t made enough progress, and Democrats and those who lean to the Democratic Party are more than twice as likely as Republicans and Republican leaners to say the U.S. hasn’t gone far enough to give women the same rights as men (76% vs. 33%). 

Americans are more dissatisfied with the state of gender equality now than when the question was asked in 2017. Three years ago, half of adults said the country hadn’t gone far enough in giving women equal rights with men, compared with 57% of adults today. This attitudinal shift has occurred across both gender and party lines.

Among those who think the country still has work to do in achieving gender equality, 77% say sexual harassment is a major obstacle to women’s equality.  Smaller shares, but still majorities, also point to other obstacles: 67% say women don’t have the same legal rights as men; 66% say that there are different societal expectations for men and women; and 64% say there aren’t enough women in positions of power. Women are more likely than men to say these are major obstacles.

About three-quarters of Americans who say country has work to do on gender equality see sexual harassment as a major obstacle

When asked what gender equality would look like, many of those who say it’s somewhat or very important for men and women to have equal rights point to the workplace. Specifically, 45% volunteer that a society where women have equal rights with men would include equal pay, and 19% say there would be no discrimination in hiring, promotion or educational opportunities. About one-in-ten (9%) point to more or equal representation in business or political leadership.

About three-in-ten U.S. men think women’s gains have come at the expense of men. Most Americans (76%) say the gains have not come at the expense of men, although 22% of adults – including 28% of men and 17% of women – think they have come at the expense of men. Republican men (38%) are twice as likely as Democratic men (19%) to say the gains women have made have come at the expense of men. A quarter of Republican women also say this, compared with 12% of Democratic women.

Among women, those without a bachelor’s degree are about twice as likely as college graduates to say women’s gains have come at the expense of men (21% vs. 10%). Educational differences are less pronounced among men.

Americans are more than twice as likely to say that, when it comes to gender discrimination, the bigger problem is people not seeing it where it really does exist, rather than people seeing discrimination where it does not exist (67% vs. 31%). Three-quarters of women point to gender discrimination being overlooked as the bigger problem; 60% of men agree.

An overwhelming majority of Democrats (85%) say the bigger problem is people overlooking gender discrimination. Among Republicans, more say the bigger problem is people seeing discrimination where it doesn’t exist (53%) than say it is people not seeing it where it does exist (46%). Republican women are far more likely than Republican men to say people overlooking gender discrimination is the bigger problem (54% vs. 38%).

Majorities say the feminist movement and the Democratic Party have done at least a fair amount when it comes to institutions and groups that have helped advance women’s rights. Seven-in-ten Americans say the feminist movement has done a great deal or a fair amount to advance women’s rights in the U.S., while 59% say the same about the Democratic Party. Far fewer (37%) say the Republican Party has done at least a fair amount to advance women’s rights.

About three-in-ten adults (29%) say President Donald Trump has done at least a fair amount to advance women’s rights, while 69% say Trump has not done much or has done nothing at all.

More say feminism has helped white women a lot than say it has done the same for Black or Hispanic women

While a majority of Americans say feminism has had a positive impact on the lives of white, Black and Hispanic women, more say feminism has helped White women a lot. About three-in-ten U.S. adults say feminism has helped the lives of white women (32%), About three-in-ten U.S. adults say feminism has helped the lives a white women a lot, compared with 21% and 15% who say this about Black women and Hispanic women, respectively.

Asked about the impact of feminism on other groups of women, a majority of Americans (57%) say feminism has helped lesbian and bisexual women at least a little, but fewer (41%) say feminism has helped transgender women. And while about half (49%) say feminism has helped wealthy and poor women at least a little, more say it’s helped wealthy women a lot (24%) than say it’s been equally helpful to poor women (10%).

About four-in-ten women (41%) say feminism has helped them personally. Women most likely to say this include those with a bachelor’s degree or more education (55%), Hispanic women (46%), women younger than 50 (47%) and Democratic women (50%).

Most who say the country still has work to do on gender equality say equality is likely to be achieved in the future. More than eight-in-ten Americans who say the country hasn’t made enough progress say it is very likely (31%) or somewhat likely (53%) that women will have equal rights with men in the future, compared with 16% who say they think gender equality is not too likely or not at all likely. Men who say the country has not yet achieved gender equality are more likely than women to say that gender equality is very likely (37% vs. 26%). Democratic women are the least likely to say this is very likely: 23% say this, compared with 35% of Republican women and 38% of Democratic and Republican men.

Equality between women and men: a must to recover better

As much of the world is gearing up for a post-pandemic recovery, some persistent gaps urgently need to be addressed to reduce inequalities and ensure a robust and inclusive recovery. Bridging gender gaps is perhaps more critical than ever.

Gender divides limit productivity growth, perpetuate income inequality, and are plain violations of human rights that prevent girls and women everywhere from reaching their full potential. Developing and developed countries alike have yet more work to do to eradicate gender barriers and achieve gender equality.

Women and girls have been disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 crisis, which will leave long lasting scars. Girls have generally been more affected than boys by school closures, and many are not expected to return. Women have suffered the brunt of the job losses and business closures. At home, they were more likely to suffer from domestic violence and abuse. Essential reproductive health services were put on hold, causing many unwanted pregnancies, maternal deaths, and stillbirths. The list goes on.

As the world moves towards a new normal, we cannot afford to overlook these issues. Gender-blind recovery policies may aggravate existing inequalities, for example by excluding women, who are typically less connected digitally, from cash transfers. The same “gender digital divide” impedes women’s access to online learning, finance and other essential online services. Absent gender sensitive policies in the hybrid work environment, may create a two-tier workforce, where men can socialize at the office while women juggle work and care at home.

The potential benefits of gender action are clear. Gender mainstreaming and gender-sensitive recovery policies can help undo some of the crisis’ harmful impacts on women, while improving resilience, growth and sustainable development prospects.

What does gender equality look like today?

Progress towards gender equality is looking bleak. But it doesn’t need to.

A new global analysis of progress on gender equality and women’s rights shows women and girls remain disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, struggling with disproportionately high job and livelihood losses, education disruptions and increased burdens of unpaid care work. Women’s health services, poorly funded even before the pandemic, faced major disruptions, undermining women’s sexual and reproductive health. And despite women’s central role in responding to COVID-19, including as front-line health workers, they are still largely bypassed for leadership positions they deserve.

UN Women’s latest report, together with UN DESA, Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2021 presents the latest data on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The report highlights the progress made since 2015 but also the continued alarm over the COVID-19 pandemic, its immediate effect on women’s well-being and the threat it poses to future generations.

We’re breaking down some of the findings from the report, and calling for the action needed to accelerate progress.

The pandemic is making matters worse

One and a half years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, the toll on the poorest and most vulnerable people remains devastating and disproportionate. The combined impact of conflict, extreme weather events and COVID-19 has deprived women and girls of even basic needs such as food security. Without urgent action to stem rising poverty, hunger and inequality, especially in countries affected by conflict and other acute forms of crisis, millions will continue to suffer.

A global goal by global goal reality check:

Goal 1. Poverty

Globally, 1 in 5 girls under 15 are growing up in extreme poverty.

In 2021, extreme poverty is on the rise and progress towards its elimination has reversed. An estimated 435 million women and girls globally are living in extreme poverty.

And yet we can change this .

Over 150 million women and girls could emerge from poverty by 2030 if governments implement a comprehensive strategy to improve access to education and family planning, achieve equal wages and extend social transfers.

Goal 2. Zero hunger

Small-scale farmer households headed by women earn on average 30% less than those headed by men.

The global gender gap in food security has risen dramatically during the pandemic, with more women and girls going hungry. Women’s food insecurity levels were 10 per cent higher than men’s in 2020, compared with 6 per cent higher in 2019.

This trend can be reversed , including by supporting women small-scale producers, who typically earn far less than men, through increased funding, training and land rights reforms.

Goal 3. Good health and well-being

In the first year of the pandemic, there were an estimated additional 1.4 million additional unintended pregnancies in lower- and middle-income countries.

Disruptions in essential health services due to COVID-19 are taking a tragic toll on women and girls. In the first year of the pandemic, there were an estimated 1.4 million additional unintended pregnancies in lower and middle-income countries.

We need to do better .

Response to the pandemic must include prioritizing sexual and reproductive health services, ensuring they continue to operate safely now and after the pandemic is long over. In addition, more support is needed to ensure life-saving personal protection equipment, tests, oxygen and especially vaccines are available in rich and poor countries alike as well as to vulnerable population within countries.

Goal 4. Quality education

Half of all refugee girls enrolled in secondary school before the pandemic will not return to school.

A year and a half into the pandemic, schools remain partially or fully closed in 42 per cent of the world’s countries and territories. School closures spell lost opportunities for girls and an increased risk of violence, exploitation and early marriage .

Governments can do more to protect girls education .

Measures focused specifically on supporting girls returning to school are urgently needed, including measures focused on girls from marginalized communities who are most at risk.

Goal 5. Gender equality

Women are restricted from working in certain jobs or industries in almost 50% of countries.

The pandemic has tested and even reversed progress in expanding women’s rights and opportunities. Reports of violence against women and girls, a “shadow” pandemic to COVID-19, are increasing in many parts of the world. COVID-19 is also intensifying women’s workload at home, forcing many to leave the labour force altogether.

Building forward differently and better will hinge on placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.

Goal 6. Clean water and sanitation

Only 26% of countries are actively working on gender mainstreaming in water management.

In 2018, nearly 2.3 billion people lived in water-stressed countries. Without safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities, women and girls find it harder to lead safe, productive and healthy lives.

Change is possible .

Involve those most impacted in water management processes, including women. Women’s voices are often missing in water management processes. 

Goal 7. Affordable and clean energy

Only about 1 in 10 senior managers in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry is a woman.

Increased demand for clean energy and low-carbon solutions is driving an unprecedented transformation of the energy sector. But women are being left out. Women hold only 32 per cent of renewable energy jobs.

We can do better .

Expose girls early on to STEM education, provide training and support to women entering the energy field, close the pay gap and increase women’s leadership in the energy sector.

Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth

In 2020 employed women fell by 54 million. Women out of the labour force rose by 45 million.

The number of employed women declined by 54 million in 2020 and 45 million women left the labour market altogether. Women have suffered steeper job losses than men, along with increased unpaid care burdens at home.

We must do more to support women in the workforce .

Guarantee decent work for all, introduce labour laws/reforms, removing legal barriers for married women entering the workforce, support access to affordable/quality childcare.

Goal 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Just 4% of clinical studies on COVID-19 treatments considered sex and/or gender in their research

The COVID-19 crisis has spurred striking achievements in medical research and innovation. Women’s contribution has been profound. But still only a little over a third of graduates in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field are female.

We can take action today.

 Quotas mandating that a proportion of research grants are awarded to women-led teams or teams that include women is one concrete way to support women researchers. 

Goal 10. Reduced inequalities

While in transit to their new destination, 53% of migrant women report experiencing or witnessing violence, compared to 19% of men.

Limited progress for women is being eroded by the pandemic. Women facing multiple forms of discrimination, including women and girls with disabilities, migrant women, women discriminated against because of their race/ethnicity are especially affected.

Commit to end racism and discrimination in all its forms, invest in inclusive, universal, gender responsive social protection systems that support all women. 

Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities

Slum residents are at an elevated risk of COVID-19 infection and fatality rates. In many countries, women are overrepresented in urban slums.

Globally, more than 1 billion people live in informal settlements and slums. Women and girls, often overrepresented in these densely populated areas, suffer from lack of access to basic water and sanitation, health care and transportation.

The needs of urban poor women must be prioritized .

Increase the provision of durable and adequate housing and equitable access to land; included women in urban planning and development processes.

Goal 12. Sustainable consumption and production; Goal 13. Climate action; Goal 14. Life below water; and Goal 15. Life on land

Women are finding solutions for our ailing planet, but are not given the platforms they deserve. Only 29% of featured speakers at international ocean science conferences are women.

Women activists, scientists and researchers are working hard to solve the climate crisis but often without the same platforms as men to share their knowledge and skills. Only 29 per cent of featured speakers at international ocean science conferences are women.

 And yet we can change this .

Ensure women activists, scientists and researchers have equal voice, representation and access to forums where these issues are being discussed and debated. 

Goal 16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

Women's unequal decision-making power undermines development at every level. Women only chair 18% of government committees on foreign affairs, defence and human rights.

The lack of women in decision-making limits the reach and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergency recovery efforts. In conflict-affected countries, 18.9 per cent of parliamentary seats are held by women, much lower than the global average of 25.6 per cent.

This is unacceptable .

It's time for women to have an equal share of power and decision-making at all levels.

Goal 17. Global partnerships for the goals

Women are not being sufficiently prioritized in country commitments to achieving the SDGs, including on Climate Action. Only 64 out of 190 of nationally determined contributions to climate goals referred to women.

There are just 9 years left to achieve the Global Goals by 2030, and gender equality cuts across all 17 of them. With COVID-19 slowing progress on women's rights, the time to act is now.

Looking ahead

As it stands today, only one indicator under the global goal for gender equality (SDG5) is ‘close to target’: proportion of seats held by women in local government. In other areas critical to women’s empowerment, equality in time spent on unpaid care and domestic work and decision making regarding sexual and reproductive health the world is far from target. Without a bold commitment to accelerate progress, the global community will fail to achieve gender equality. Building forward differently and better will require placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.

Equal Rights for Men and Women

During the last several decades, women have demonstrated considerable shifts in proving their rights and equality along with men. Some people still do not believe in equal rights for men and women, addressing unfair treatment and biased judgments. In this paper, the equality of gender rights will be proved through the prism of religious, employment, and social thoughts and a thorough analysis of human interactions.

Addressing various thematic books and articles, it is evident that religion remains ambiguous in the gender rights discussion. On the one hand, during the Jesus era, people lived in a male-dominated world, and men and women had to perform different roles (“Gender equality,” n.d.). On the other hand, the Bible says that all humans, both men and women, were created in the image of God (“Gender equality,” n.d.). Therefore, it is correct to believe that all people deserve fair treatment and share their responsibilities equally.

Today, the rights between men and women are improved in terms of employment. According to the United Nations (n.d.), men and women have equal access to education and health care. As a result, they are usually employed equally, and attention is paid to their skills, not their biological structures. Although many other factors could affect people’s employment choices, it is wrong to think that a woman could obtain fewer opportunities if she works as hard as a man.

Finally, relying on personal observations and conclusions, it is possible to admit that women are never restricted by their gender in society. Men and women visit the same restaurants, shops, and service centers under the same conditions. It is hard to believe that a library or restaurant employee rejects a woman to enter and allows a man to do the same. People live in an equal society where male and female rights are properly promoted.

In general, there are many reasons to believe in equal rights for men and women. Instead of trying to find some differences or unclear issues, it is better to recognize the threat of other inequalities that exist today. People are more challenged by racial or economic differences, and not many effective solutions are present at the moment. Gender inequality exists until a person believes in this possibility and disappears as soon as other critical problems emerge.

7 Reasons Why Gender Equality Is Good For Everyone

Research shows that the world has a long way to go to achieve gender equality . Despite decades of progress, millions of women and girls still deal with violence and discrimination. Steps like closing the gender pay gap and promoting girls’ education make a huge difference. While most believe that gender equality is a worthy goal, why is it good for everyone? Why should it be such a high priority?

Gender equality gives everyone equal opportunities

Education is the key to equal opportunities. In today’s world, more boys than girls are educated. According to UNICEF , around 1 in 4 girls between 15-19 years old don’t have a job and are not getting an education or training. For boys, that ratio is 1 in 10. Right from the beginning, this gives boys better opportunities than girls. Without many options, girls are often forced into marriages or human trafficking . It is also much harder to leave dangerous relationships and situations without education to fall back on. When gender equality starts with education, everyone has the opportunity to improve their lives.

Gender equality is good for children

Reproductive rights are a key part of gender equality. When women make their own reproductive choices, their lives improve. They are then able to better care for the children they do choose to have. Having equal pay with men, women can provide better healthcare, better food, and better opportunities for their kids. Even if a mother chooses to stay at home with her children, the effects of gender equality (like equal pay and education) provide a safety net in case she does need to go to work. Studies also show that infant mortality rates decrease as a woman’s education level increases. In a world with gender equality, children are set up for success and happiness.

Gender equality is good for marginalized racial groups

Gender-based discrimination has a close relationship with racial discrimination. In most places, women belonging to marginalized racial groups are treated less equal than other women. The gender pay gap is a prime example. In the United States, Asian and Caucasian women earn more than Hispanic, black, and native women. White women are also more likely to get better healthcare and better job opportunities. That’s why gender equality must be intersectional. This requires an acknowledgment of different experiences, identities, and the unique discriminations women face. Striving for intersectional gender equality can help reduce racial discrimination and inequality wherever it’s found.

Gender equality is good for men

Gender equality doesn’t only benefit girls and women; it benefits men, as well. There are a few key reasons. A man who is perceived as “feminine” is not a “real man” when gender inequality exists. This leads to toxic masculinity, which is destructive and harmful to everyone. When there’s gender equality, men have more freedom about how they express themselves. This extends into the career field , as well, since no job is considered “for women only.” Men receive parental leave and family time without discrimination. Increased freedom of expression and flexible work choices leads to happiness. With gender equality, men don’t face as much pressure to fit a stereotype.

Gender equality is good for business and the economy

When girls and women get equal education and job opportunities with men, all of society benefits. Studies reveal that a diverse workplace is a more productive workplace . That diversity includes gender diversity. There’s research that shows specifically that businesses that put some women in the top leadership roles do better than businesses with only men in leadership. That success translates into the economy as a whole. Closing up gender pay gaps saves a country money. Equal education and jobs also significantly reduce poverty rates, lifting an entire nation and improving its GDP.

Gender equality fosters peace

Violence disrupts society at every level. Gender inequality is the source of a lot of violence including human trafficking and a lack of legal protections for abused women. Improving equality for girls and women can reduce the amount of violence and provide security for those who are vulnerable . Research also shows that gender equality is a better indicator of a country’s likelihood to deploy military force than its GDP. As gender equality improves, a country’s peace improves. In turn, this is important for gender equality because war disproportionately affects women.

Gender equality: it’s good for everyone

Children, women, and men benefit from gender equality. It also addresses racial discrimination and improves business and the economy. While it will be some time before gender equality is a reality around the world, we’ve made enough progress to see its benefits in action. The goal now is to keep promoting gender equality while replacing old systems based on discrimination and outdated mindsets.

A new report shows that many people around the world believe that men should receive favorable treatment in some areas, particularly employment and education. What do you think?

As Victoria Shannon reports, a Pew Research Center study found that despite affirmations that the sexes should be treated equally, people do believe that men should receive preferential treatment in some cases:

People around the world say they firmly support equal rights for men and women, but many still believe men should get preference when it comes to good jobs, higher education or even in some cases the simple right to work outside the home, according to a new survey of 22 nations. The poll, conducted in April and May by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project in association with the International Herald Tribune, shows that in both developing countries and wealthy ones, there is a pronounced gap between a belief in the equality of the sexes and how that translates into reality.

I think there is an unfortunate stigma when it comes to “the battle of the sexes”, everything is always extreme. This is a new generation and a new time, yet we’re still asking “are women equal to men?”. The extremes of femanists and old mens clubs continually clash until they prove each other right, that women “will be brawling if given control” and that “men don’t want to relinquish control”. Why can’t we just be? Why does gender have to determine personality, opportunity and lifestyle? Martin Luther King Jr said he wanted his kids to be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. I feel the same way about being female. Different body parts don’t affect motivation, determine intelligence or enhance mental abilities. Rather than determine who’s better, I think we need to finally say that we’re all the same. Judge me by who I am, not what I am.

People should get jobs and opportunities based on their ability to perfom the work. A woman should never be banned from doing a job she is capable of.

Religious fanatics need to be locked up for delusional beliefs.

Just because a misogynist named Mohammed wrote something down it doesn’t mean it’s right, it’s only his opinion.

Life is supported by the eartth, sun, moon and universe. It’s a scientific fact.

No women should ever be subjugated and enslaved to a man.

Women should have privileges over men. When men ran away from home, women take care of children.

Gender equality has been a struggle for many years. Women and some men who support gender equality have been fighting for the right to vote and own property such as land. Men and women should be treated equality although many believe that this is not so. People have been taught to value their place in society even when they are placed underneath someone else. Gender equality allows both men and women to do and have opportunities as each other. Men and women should have equal rights; times are changing and although most still have the idea that women are inferior to men it is not true. Women are capable of getting an education, good jobs, and working outside of the house. Just like men, women can accomplish these goals they can get a higher education if they are willing to work for. It would not be fair for a woman who has a higher education to get a job lower in status of that of a man. People who work hard to get a higher education than others should be rewarded with jobs that are worthy of them. Men should not get a preference to good jobs than women because it is not fair they should be looked at in the same way. Whether a female or a male neither should get a preference it is wrong to believe that a woman should stay at home while a man goes to work everyone needs some time away from home and adventure. Equality is sometimes an issue in America but the Constitution always defends the rights of everyone. When there is a problem the female or male can defend their rights by court. America is run by a democracy where everyone is equal and has the opportunity of freedom of speech. This allows women to speak out against unfairness and they get to defend themselves as citizens. Although America is run by a democracy, many other nations are not they are run by dictatorships or others. For the women living in these nations it is harder to speak out against gender equality. They really have to fight in what they believe is right. Life in many cases is what you make it and I can not say whether a male or female has a better life because people make decisions that change their lives and the actions that they make built who they are. Men and women make decisions such as skipping class, going to college, making an early career, and doing extra curricular activities. These factors change a person’s future because it constructs the life they are to have whether it is poor, rich, happy, or mad. People who want better lives for themselves or for their children, will fight against any predigest judgments and go through barriers opening doors for the next generations. Gender equality is a barrier that one has to fight through to see the light ahead and get further in life.

I believe in men and women being equal, but I do believe that selective service should be mandatory for both sexes. Isn’t it a bit unfair that in a time of war, only the men have to risk their lives? That could be a main debate point in men being superior to women.

I still believe that being a man is more advantage than a woman. It’s sad because first of all, I am a woman. But dated from the ancient world, roman, greek or whatsoever… men play more roles and, take more responsibilities and make bigger decisions than women. While women take care of the household, men go to war. It’s just the strongest will survive theory. Despite how quick the world turns around and now that women provide for family as well, men still dominate in most society and therefore earn more rights than women.

In Northern Nigeria where I come from, there are an estimated 11 million illiterate children. While many of them are young boys that beg on the streets, a great number are girls who are forced to hawk on the streets to sustain their families. This is alongside the fact that many of the women who are housewives run small businesses from their homes. These women sustain their families, and yet they are not recognised or appreciated. In all aspects of Nigerian life, women are subjugated by men and are expected to accept this subjugation without complaining. This is a very big issue in my country. Society must understand that women and men can never have the same roles in most aspects of life, but they must be given the same tools to become better people.

I believe that there is still a long way to go. In my country this is a deep cultural issue. Women has to prove twice to be considered equal. And I’m talking about the cities. Speaking as a girl who is constantly taunted by the words “Well, you’re a girl that’s why,” I’d have to say that gender equality is definitely important. I believe that our society provides equal opportunities for both men and women, and I admit that some jobs are more suitable for men than women, but there are many women that are capable of doing a man’s work, it’s just that there typically aren’t very many. It can be a matter of who does it better. I think it’s more of a matter of degradation where there is a pride issue that separates the equality of men and women in that person’s head. I find myself saying that girls have it way worse than guys and I find that many girls will have to concur just because their period leaked or something like that. I think it’s hard to say who has it easier because we don’t know what each individual is going through because life is what you make it so if you make it better, then your life is bound to be better than those who don’t.

Women have been fighting for equal rights most of their life time. Although many people think that women are now equal to men it is not true. Men receive many more perks than women do. A large amount of business’s are sexist and will pay a man a higher salary just because he is a man. A women could be doing his job better than him and it still will not change how she is getting paid. That will probably never change, but men are not any better than women and women are not any better than men. They should both have equal rights.

What are human rights? Human rights are the rights that all people are supposed to enjoy by being human beings. All people are entitled to equal human rights regardless of gender, race, and place of residence, religious affiliation, language, or nationality. Human rights are universal in nature, to mean that they are applicable in every part of the universe to everyone. No person can or should be denied their rights. There are many human rights such as the right to association, the right to education, right to basic needs, the right to live and much more. These are just but some of them. Many more human rights should be observed at all times.

The topic of whether men and women should have equal human rights has been at the center of controversy in many parts of the world. Men seem to regard themselves as more superior to women. This, however, is a rather ignorant view of the subject matter. As stated earlier, human beings are equal regardless of gender or race. Therefore, both men and women deserve equal rights since they are similar in all aspects whatsoever.

Men and women are entitled to receive an education of equal standards. Education is a paramount aspect of our livelihood. It is incredibly shameful that at this point and time of human existence, there are still people who believe that women are meant to stay at home and serve men rather than be educated. The right to democracy and participation in elections has also been disregarded to women on a gender basis. This has been the case in Saudi Arabia up to recently when the nation bowed to world pressure to allow their women participate in elections and vie for elective posts in the government. It is somber that women in this nation for many years were not able to participate in national development by electing their leaders. World leaders greatly criticized this alienation from participating in elections.

Both men and women are entitled to equal treatment. Therefore, human rights should be upheld at all times irrespective of gender. It is worthy to mention that there has been a significant improvement in the protection of human rights in the recent past in most areas of the world. The isolated cases of human rights violation based on gender are in the process of being eliminated.
