For quantity surveyors, creating an outstanding cover letter can make all the difference when it comes to securing interviews and ultimately landing your dream job.

In this article, we will provide you with a quantity surveyor cover letter example and tips on how to create a winning cover letter.

1. Introduction – Hook Your Reader’s Attention

Beginning your cover letter with a bang is crucial as it sets the tone for what follows. You want to grab the hiring manager’s attention right away by highlighting why you are the perfect candidate for the position. Here’s an example of how to do it:

Dear [Hiring Manager], As a highly experienced Quantity Surveyor with over [eight] years of expertise, I am excited to apply for the vacant position advertised on [insert company name] website. Having researched your organization extensively, I firmly believe that my extensive knowledge and proven track record align perfectly with the values and mission statement of your company. I am confident that joining your team would allow me to contribute significantly to achieving organizational goals.

2. Demonstrate Relevant Skills and Experience

The next step is to emphasize your relevant qualifications and experiences. This section requires you to take stock of the skills and competencies required for the position and match them against your own strengths. Ensure that your examples illustrate your ability to perform the tasks listed in the job description.

For instance, if the position calls for proficiency in cost estimation software such as Candy, CostX or Planswift, then you may say:

“Throughout my career, I have honed my skills in estimating using industry-standard software such as Candy and CostX. My most recent project involved managing a budget of [80 lakhs] utilizing these tools.”

3. Show Enthusiasm for the Company and Role

Another essential aspect of crafting a great cover letter is demonstrating your interest in the specific organization and role being applied for. This could mean researching the company thoroughly and identifying areas where you feel your skills would add value. If possible, mention any personal connections you might have with the organization; it shows that you understand their culture and ethos.

“Having closely followed [Company Name] growth story over the past few years, I am thrilled to submit my application for this role. I am particularly drawn to your company’s commitment to sustainable development, which resonates deeply with my professional values.”

4. Highlight Your Key Strengths

This section involves outlining your strongest selling points and explaining how they fit into the requirements specified in the job advertisement. Avoid repeating yourself here; instead, focus on presenting new ideas and insights that differentiate you from other candidates. Use quantifiable data whenever possible, as numbers tend to stand out more than simple statements.

Sample Statement:

“One of my greatest strengths lies in my analytical abilities, which enable me to identify potential risks and opportunities during preconstruction phases. During my time at XYZ Construction, our team was able to save approximately $500,00 through proactive risk management strategies I implemented”

5. End With a Call to Action

Ending your cover letter on a positive note increases its chances of leaving a lasting impression on the recruiter. Make sure you express gratitude for considering your application and invite further communication. You can also indicate whether you intend to follow up and how soon after submission you plan to reach back out (if applicable). Finally, close the letter professionally and sign off warmly.

“I thank you immensely for taking the time to review my application. Should you require additional information or wish to discuss my candidacy further, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email/phone.” Or, “Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to discussing my suitability for this exciting position in greater detail.”

Assistant Quantity Surveyor CV format and structure

Hiring managers and recruiters are frequently overloaded with applications, and if they can’t identify the relevant information in your CV within a few seconds, your application may be overlooked.

To avoid this, it’s essential to format and structure your CV in a manner that makes it simple to pick out the most important information, even if the reader is in a rush.

How to write a CV

Tips for formatting your Assistant Quantity Surveyor CV

  • Length: Two sides of A4 makes for the perfect CV length , though one page is okay for less experienced applicants. This forces you to make sure that every single sentence adds value to your CV and ensures you avoid unnecessary  info.
  • Readability : Columns, lists, bullet points, bold text and subtle colour can all help to aid the readability of your CV. Your overarching goal should be to make the content as easy to read and navigate as possible, whilst also aiming to make your key skills and achievements stand out.
  • Design & format: It’s generally best to stick to a simple CV design, as funky or elaborate designs rarely add any value to your application. A clear, modern font and a subtle colour scheme work perfectly and allow your skills, experience and achievements to speak for themselves.
  • Photos: Headshot photos aren’t required in a CV by most employers, but some creative and artistic industries like to see them. If you decide to include one, make sure you look smart and professional in the picture.

Quick tip: Creating a professional CV style can be difficult and time-consuming when using Microsoft Word or Google Docs. To create a winning CV quickly, try our quick-and-easy CV Builder and use one of their eye-catching professional CV templates.

CV formatting tips

CV structure

When writing your own CV , break up your CV content into the following key sections:

  • Name and contact details – Place them at the top of your CV, so that employers can easily get in touch.
  • CV profile – A punchy sales pitch of your key experience, skills and achievements to reel readers in.
  • Core skills section – A bullet-pointed snapshot of your abilities.
  • Work experience – A well-structured list of your relevant work experience.
  • Education – An overview of any relevant qualifications or professional training you have.
  • Hobbies and interests – A short description of any relevant hobbies or interests (optional).

Now you understand the basic layout of a CV, here’s what you should include in each section of yours.

Contact Details

Contact details

Make it easy for recruiters to get in touch, by heading your CV with your contact details.

There’s no need for excessive details – just list the basics:

  • Mobile number
  • Email address – Use a professional address with no nicknames.
  • Location – Just write your general location, such as ‘London’ or ‘Cardiff’ – there’s no need to put your full address.
  • LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL

Assistant Quantity Surveyor CV Profile

Recruiters and hiring managers are busy, so it’s essential to catch their attention from the get-go.

A strong introductory profile (or personal statement , for junior candidates) at the top of the CV is the first thing they’ll read, so it’s a great chance to make an impression.

It should be a short but punchy summary of your key skills, relevant experience and accomplishments.

Ultimately, it should explain why you’re a great fit for the role you’re applying for and inspire recruiters to read the rest of your CV.

CV profile

How to write a good CV profile:

  • Make it short and sharp: Aim for a short, snappy paragraph of 3-5 lines. This is just enough room to showcase why you’d make the perfect hire, without going into excessive detail and overwhelming busy recruiters.
  • Tailor it: The biggest CV mistake? A generic, mass-produced document which is sent out to tens of employers. If you want to land an interview, you need to tailor your CV profile (and your application as a whole) to the specific roles you’re applying for. So, before you start writing, remember to read over those job descriptions and make a list of the skills, knowledge and experience the employers are looking for.
  • Don’t add an objective: Avoid discussing your career goals in your CV profile – if you think they’re necessary, briefly mention them in your cover letter instead.
  • Avoid generic phrases: If your CV is riddled with clichès like “Dynamic thought-leader”, hit that delete button. Phrases like these are like a broken record to recruiters, who read them countless times per day. Hard facts, skills, knowledge and results are sure to yield far better results.

Example CV profile for Assistant Quantity Surveyor

What to include in your assistant quantity surveyor cv profile.

  • Experience overview: To give employers an idea of your capabilities, show them your track record by giving an overview of the types of companies you have worked for in the past and the roles you have carried out for previous employers – but keep it high level and save the details for your experience section.
  • Targeted skills: Highlight your skills which are most relevant to Assistant Quantity Surveyor jobs, to ensure that recruiters see your most in-demand skills as soon as they open your CV.
  • Important qualifications: If you have any qualifications which are highly relevant to Assistant Quantity Surveyor jobs, then highlight them in your profile so that employers do not miss them.

Quick tip: If you are finding it difficult to write an attention-grabbing CV profile, choose from hundreds of pre-written profiles across all industries, and add one to your CV with one click in our quick-and-easy CV Builder . All profiles are written by recruitment experts and easily tailored to suit your unique skillset.

Core skills section

Next, you should create a bullet pointed list of your core skills , formatted into 2-3 columns.

Here, you should focus on including the most important skills or knowledge listed in the job advertisement.

This will instantly prove that you’re an ideal candidate, even if a recruiter only has time to briefly scan your CV.

Work experience

Now that recruiters have a good overview of your skills and abilities, you need to jump into the detail of your career history.

Give them a more thorough insight into what you can do by creating a detailed list of your relevant experience.

Start with your current role, and work backwards through all the relevant positions you’ve held. This could be freelance, contract or voluntary work too; as long as it’s related to the role you’re applying for.

Work experience

Structuring each job

The structure of your work experience section can seriously affect its impact.

This is generally the biggest section of a CV, and with no thought to structure, it can look bulky and important information can get lost.

Use my 3-step structure below to allow for easy navigation, so employers can find what they are looking for:

Role descriptions

Start with a solid introduction to your role as a whole, in order to build some context.

Explain the nature of the organisation you worked for, the size of the team you were part of, who you reported to and what the overarching purpose of your job was.

Key responsibilities

Using easy-to-read bullet points, note down your day-to-day responsibilities in the role.

Make sure to showcase how you used your hard sector skills and knowledge.

Key achievements

Round up each role by listing 1-3 key achievements , accomplishments or results.

Be careful what you include though… Only consider hobbies that exhibit skills that are required for roles as a Assistant Quantity Surveyor, or transferable workplace skills.

Once you’ve written your Assistant Quantity Surveyor CV, you should proofread it several times to ensure that there are no typos or grammatical errors.

With a tailored punchy profile that showcases your relevant experience and skills, paired with well-structured role descriptions, you’ll be able to impress employers and land interviews.
