Claude A. Eggertsen Dissertation Prize

The History of Education Society invites submissions for the 2024 Claude A. Eggertsen Dissertation Prize. The prize has been awarded annually since 1981 to the dissertation judged to be most outstanding in the field of history of education. Dissertations may focus on the historical aspects of schooling and/or broader educational processes. They may have a domestic, comparative, or international focus. The committee will judge each dissertation based on the originality of the argument, significance of the contribution, use of evidence, and the quality of writing.

The winner of this award will be recognized at the banquet of the 2024 annual meeting of the History of Education Society and receive a prize of $1,000. Self-nominations are welcome, as are nominations submitted by dissertation advisors and committee members. Applicants must have deposited the dissertation and graduated during the calendar year 2023. The deadline for entries is July 10, 2024 . Entrants should send an electronic copy (PDFs preferred) of the complete dissertation, an abstract of the dissertation, and their CV to each of the three prize committee members below.

Queen Mary graduate awarded joint-first prize in dissertation competition

Recent geography graduate, Tabitha Shell, has won the RGS-IBG Gender and Feminist Geographies Research Group Dissertation Prize  for her dissertation Emotional geographies of breastfeeding: private and public spaces of support and stress , taking home a prize of £60.

Tabitha was nominated for this award by her supervisor after graduating from Queen Mary over the summer.

"To come joint first was quite a surprise! My supervisor was fantastic and really helped me on my way after I got over the initial hurdle of data collection."

Tabitha also commented on how proud she is to have received this prize on her chosen topic, "because I think the topic is so important and I am really glad the issue is getting recognition. I learnt so much from the wonderful women who helped me hugely by taking time out of their schedules and letting me interview them about a really sensitive and emotional time in their lives."

Student Handbook 2023/24

10. assessment, 10.10. dissertation.

You can go 10% +/- the word limit without penalty, markers will not mark anything that is beyond 10% of the word count.

Every word submitted is counted, with the only exception of the bibliography.

Examples of items which are included in the word count are:

  • table of contents
  • wording under a diagram
  • words in graphs
  • tables and diagrams.

This is not an exclusive list, consequently you should keep in mind that all words count- use them wisely.

Whilst we appreciate it is difficult to reach exactly the required word count, you should aim to reach as close to this as possible without going over.

At Masters Level, we would expect students to be able to edit their own work to produce an essay within the maximum word count.

There is no minimum word count.  However, dissertations that are considerably shorter than the maximum word count may fail to fully address the topic and will be marked accordingly.

Your submitted dissertation should have a top sheet which should include the following information only:

  • Module number (i.e. SOLMxxx)
  • Module Title
  • Final Word count
  • Student I.D number (this is not username lcxxx, check your MySiS or Student I.D card)

There is no official style guide for the dissertation.  However, although there are no specific requirements regarding format or font size, we recommend you use a 12 point font in a common font style, double space the main text and use margins of at least 2 cm.  Footnotes should be no smaller than 10 point, normally in the same font as the main text.

Your name should not appear anywhere on your dissertation.  There are no further rules with regards to the title page; you may use colour or graphics if you wish.
