Cell phones which are currently more reliable enable users to communicate over a two-way network. With this, users can communicate via radio frequencies throughout the world hence making communication easy. This is unlikely while using cordless telephones which have limitations on the area of coverage. Cell phones also do support many interesting features like the internet, Bluetooth. Technology has become an important part of our lives and it is difficult to imagine life without technological devices such as smart phones. While smart phones are now becoming a commodity due to their several benefits, they may also impose certain costs on the society.

One of the benefits of smart phones is an increase in work productivity. Smart phones now have advanced computing technologies but at the same time they are more portable than laptops. This means one can also perform work tasks while travelling or just sitting in a café. Even students now use smart phones to access course materials on their schools’ and colleges’ websites.

Smart phones allow us to stay connected with others round-the-clock (Andrew). While cell phones also do that, smart phones do not only enable oral communication but also every imaginable form of written communication such as messaging, social media, and emails. In addition, smart phones now often incorporate video technologies which also enable visual communication.

One of the major disadvantages of smart phones is that it is negatively affecting our social lives including face-to-face interaction. First of all, smart phone users are increasingly substituting face-to-face interaction with technological communication. Second, even when smart phone owners are with family members or friends, they are easily distracted by smart phones (Glaser). Another disadvantage of smart phones is costs. It is not uncommon for smart phone users to have data plans to take advantage of the full potential of their devices. These costs can be substantial for low income people.

Smart phones have revolutionized modern societies by allowing individuals to become more productive at work and in studies. Smart phones have also revolutionized written communication in addition to oral communication. But this convenience has come at a cost including deteriorating social relationships.

Should kids have cell phones?

An increasing number of companies are now selling cell phones for kids . This is a fast growing market. A study conducted in the USA showed that in average children get their first cell phone at the age of 6 and that parents spend $462 per child in the latest technological gadgets.  The use of interactive screen media, such as smartphones and tablets , by young children is increasing rapidly but still remains  a controversial and understudied issue . Research on the children's utilization of cell phones and new family dynamics  has lagged behind the rate of adoption of these products.

No widely accepted pediatric guidelines regarding smartphone use by young children have been formulated yet. Mobile media differs from television in several ways. In addition to watching videos, small children can play video games , use educational apps and communicate with friends online. Smartphones offer new interactivity and can potentially absorb more time of children lives than previous forms of entertainment and older mobile phones.  

Pros and cons of cell phones for kids

• Safety : if the children have phones their parents can always reach them and they can always reach their parents. Moreover there are some tracking applications that serve to keep children under control and know their whereabouts. In fact a study by Child Guide Magazine found that 31% of parents bought cell phones for their kids for security reasons , in case children needed to contact parents. Phones have served the police to locate children that were lost in the forest or mountains.
• Educational value : new interactive media, such as smartphones and tablets offer kids the opportunity of learn while playing. There are apps that help children learning math, languages, acquiring spacial skills, etc. Phones with internet connection can help them to look for concepts or words they do not understand and thus have a positive impact on children's education.
• Responsibility : mobile phones are expensive. Owning a phone can help them develop a sense of responsibility and learn how to manage costs.
• Social benefits : children want to do what their friends do. Most children in rich countries already have phones. Therefore, not having a phone may be considered a sign of social awkwardness. Smartphones are a great way to coordinate activities with other kids. Thanks to their phones children are better connected with their friends even when they are away on holidays. Moreover, according to scientific research  smartphones can facilitate the communication and social skills of children with autism.
• Entertainment : children enjoy their phones as they can listen to music, play video games and watch videos. For their partents sometimes it is very convenient to have them entertained with their phones while they do house chores or drive. Some games such as Pokemon Go may make children also to go outdoors and be more sociable.
• Dangers of the Internet : it's difficult to restrict access to inappropriate content in the Internet. Extreme violence, pornography, anorexia advocacy and ethnic or religious hatred are some of the contents parents would like to their children to avoind at all costs. However blocking all this content is not possible and kids sometimes find ways to bypass restrictions.
• Consumerism and s ocial status : parents buying very expensive phones to their children may be sending the wrong message to their children.  Cell phones, as clothing, can serve as identifiers of the socio-economic background, and, therefore, contribute to create differences among children in school or the playground. Only some families may afford to buy expensive devices, such as the iPhone 6  or the Samsung Galaxy S6, for their children . Moreover the Internet is like a huge 24/7 shopping mall. Children may spend too much time checking things they want to buy.
• Costly : if children do not stick to some rules of usage they may produce great costs for their parents. Losing or breaking a phone is a common incident. Children often get their phones stolen. Moreover, they could download many applications, make calls o utside their cell phones plans  or use 3g or 4G without WiFi connection . Some parents have received  shocking phone bills due to their children's irresponsible usage.
• Procrastination and disruption : kids may be messaging or playing with their phones while they should be studying or paying attention to their teachers. Moreover, children should spend some time playing other type of games or toys such as Lego or Playmobil , which also have educational value.
• Other inapropriate use : some children use their phones to take inappropiate pictures or videos and uploading them to Instagram or Snapchat . Smartphones have become also an instrument for bullying, sexual harrassment and blackmail among children.

Bad Sides of Mobile Phone: 

Including all these good sides, there are many bad sides too. It creates a distance between you with your parents, friends, and relatives, etc. People get too distracted with too much using mobile devices. It happens mostly for the people who play too many video games or use too much social media .

Sometimes it is a waste of time, money, and energy when we don’t use it in the proper way. It causes many health problems. And finally, as a student you can face a huge study loss. Some applications steal data from your phone and that could be a risk.

Bans may help protect classroom focus, but districts need to stay mindful of students’ sense of connection, experts say

Students around the world are being separated from their phones.

In 2020, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that 77 percent of U.S. schools had moved to prohibit cellphones for nonacademic purposes. In September 2018, French lawmakers outlawed cellphone use for schoolchildren under the age of 15. In China, phones were banned country-wide for schoolchildren last year.

Supporters of these initiatives have cited links between smartphone use and bullying and social isolation and the need to keep students focused on schoolwork.

But some Harvard experts say instructors and administrators should consider learning how to teach with tech instead of against it, in part because so many students are still coping with academic and social disruptions caused by the pandemic. At home, many young people were free to choose how and when to use their phones during learning hours. Now, they face a school environment seeking to take away their main source of connection.

“Returning back to in-person, I think it was hard to break the habit,” said Victor Pereira, a lecturer on education and co-chair of the Teaching and Teaching Leadership Program at the Graduate School of Education.

Through their students, he and others with experience both in the classroom and in clinical settings have seen interactions with technology blossom into important social connections that defy a one-size-fits-all mindset. “Schools have been coming back, trying to figure out, how do we readjust our expectations?” Pereira added.

It’s a hard question, especially in the face of research suggesting that the mere presence of a smartphone can undercut learning .

Michael Rich , an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of social and behavioral sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says that phones and school don’t mix: Students can’t meaningfully absorb information while also texting, scrolling, or watching YouTube videos.

“The human brain is incapable of thinking more than one thing at a time,” he said. “And so what we think of as multitasking is actually rapid-switch-tasking. And the problem with that is that switch-tasking may cover a lot of ground in terms of different subjects, but it doesn’t go deeply into any of them.”

Pereira’s approach is to step back — and to ask whether a student who can’t resist the phone is a signal that the teacher needs to work harder on making a connection. “Two things I try to share with my new teachers are, one, why is that student on the phone? What’s triggering getting on your cell phone versus jumping into our class discussion, or whatever it may be? And then that leads to the second part, which is essentially classroom management.

“Design better learning activities, design learning activities where you consider how all of your students might want to engage and what their interests are,” he said. He added that allowing phones to be accessible can enrich lessons and provide opportunities to use technology for school-related purposes.

Mesfin Awoke Bekalu, a research scientist in the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness at the Chan School, argues that more flexible classroom policies can create opportunities for teaching tech-literacy and self-regulation.

“There is a huge, growing body of literature showing that social media platforms are particularly helpful for people who need resources or who need support of some kind, beyond their proximate environment,” he said. A study he co-authored by Rachel McCloud and Vish Viswanath for the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness shows that this is especially true for marginalized groups such as students of color and LGBTQ students. But the findings do not support a free-rein policy, Bekalu stressed.

In the end, Rich, who noted the particular challenges faced by his patients with attention-deficit disorders and other neurological conditions, favors a classroom-by-classroom strategy. “It can be managed in a very local way,” he said, adding: “It’s important for parents, teachers, and the kids to remember what they are doing at any point in time and focus on that. It’s really only in mono-tasking that we do very well at things.”

Cell phones in classrooms—yes or no?

With July cruising into its last week, the start of the school year rapidly approaches. Supplies, class lists, meetings, and more begin filling up family schedules. A new cell phone might be on your child’s supplies or wish list—but should they have access to it in school?

For parents, how would you feel if your district made a policy forbidding cell phones? Thrilled for them to get off their phones for a while? Anxious about not being able to reach them?

For teachers, would you miss having phones for some assignments, or would you breathe a huge sigh of relief? Currently, few districts or schools have explicit and/or effectively supported policies, leaving many teachers and parents to create their own systems. These systems often add up to a hodgepodge of inconsistent expectations that don’t support students or teachers.

What does the science show us about smartphones in school? Unfortunately, not much. Research has been slow to catch up on these concerns despite the urgent need for answers.

Still, some conclusions can be drawn from the existing studies combined with accumulating experiences from parents, teachers, mental health professionals, and students. Cell phones in school—and specifically in the classroom—appear to offer both potential benefits and significant risks to learning. It turns out the subject isn’t a simple choice between banning them entirely or letting kids have access without guardrails.

Some of the biggest potential benefits of cell phones in school or classrooms include improving access to and engagement in learning. Teachers can meet kids where they are and build creative lesson plans and activities that use students’ phones. For some students with disabilities, phones can be powerful tools for increasing accessibility to learning materials and classroom participation.

The other benefit that many parents value is being able to reach their child during the school day. Often, parents and students worry that in an extreme situation—such as a shooting or lockdown—they want to be able to reach each other. At the same time, easy access to phones has led to some normalizing of routine communications between students and parents during the day, which can disrupt student learning and classroom function.

Even with these potential positives, the presence of cell phones in the classroom brings significant negatives, but one is the most fundamental— distraction . “Multi-tasking” doesn’t work—especially in learning situations.

Some research has shown that once a student is on their phone (or even has a phone in their vicinity), it takes about 20 minutes for them to refocus on the material being presented. That’s about one-half of a typical high school class period—meaning students can be missing 50 percent of what is being taught. Not only are they missing material, but they also aren’t engaging in the learning process with teachers and peers. Effective learning is active, and being on their phone takes that away.

The content on cell phones effectively keeps our eyes on the screen and discourages looking away. Big Tech makes big money by creating algorithms that are meant to steal our attention . They excel at it. It’s hard enough for adults to regulate phone use, but children and teen brains don’t have anywhere near fully developed impulse control abilities. Asking them to just stop doing it—without carefully designed barriers and supports—is simply not going to work.

And for students with learning differences and disorders such as ADHD —or who are struggling with learning for any reason—the temptation to look at their phone and not participate in class is tremendous. While these students often disengage in other ways ( sleeping , staring out the window, going to the bathroom), having access to constant, algorithm-driven content creates a rabbit hole that’s all too easy for them to get deeply lost in. While phones might be helpful for specific learning tasks for students with disabilities, free-range access hurts learning and engagement.

As schools become more aware of how harmful cell phones can be to learning, attempts to limit this harm often face strong headwinds from parent concerns about being able to reach their children. Schools and districts must integrate these concerns when developing policies that would limit children’s access to their devices during the day. It’s easy to say that we can go back to calling the office if you need to get a message to your child, but fears of something like a school shooting are powerful—and, while extremely rare, difficult to dismiss.

Hammering out systems for keeping kids off phones when they are supposed to be learning will require effective communication between everyone involved, including administration, teachers, families, and (older) students. Administrators must develop mechanisms to support the implementation of policies. Expectations need to apply to all students because kids worry that if they are the only ones not on their phones, they miss out on critical social connections. Without universal policy implementation, even with children who would prefer to put their phones away (and many would), their very normal need to stay connected would win out.

Any policy enacted needs to be dynamic, flexible, and responsive to feedback. Students with disabilities will require reasonable accommodations. Well-defined and effective systems for feedback from all stakeholders will be critical to keep policies viable and successful. Evolution in technology will create new needs and opportunities.

Learning is a fundamental right for our children. Participating in school and learning is key to kids’ physical and mental health. While the debate rages on about phones in kids’ lives outside of school, it seems clear that, as hard as it will be, cell phones don’t belong in the classroom.

ChatGPT vs Google Gemini (2024): What Are the Main Differences?

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are AI chatbots designed to generate responses to prompts. When used appropriately, ChatGPT and Google Gemini can support certain business processes in content production, development and more. Take a look at each tool’s features, pros and cons to see which AI chatbot would be best for your business.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that generates human-like responses based on text input. It has been trained on a huge amount of internet text and enabled by the large language model GPT-4.

What is Google Gemini?

Like ChatGPT, Google Gemini can answer questions and generate text from prompts . Google Gemini was originally released as Google Bard, a chatbot based on the LaMDA family of large language models. In February 2024, Google introduced Gemini, which was trained on the large language model PaLM, and folded the Bard brand name into Gemini.

Google Gemini vs ChatGPT: Main differences

One major difference is that the free version of ChatGPT lacks up-to-date information, while Gemini can access the internet.

The underpinnings of the two AI chatbots are also different: ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT 4o mini or GPT-4o, depending on free or paid access, and Gemini is based on Google’s Gemini Ultra, Pro or Nano, depending on the language and country. Gemini can interpret images, is interoperable and supports extensions that draw data from Google products such as Google Flights, Hotels, Maps, Drive, Gmail, Docs and YouTube. An upgrade to ChatGPT Plus allows access to many third-party plugins for expanded functionality.

Both allow users to upload files for analysis, identification or captioning.

ChatGPT and Google Gemini pricing

ChatGPT’s basic version is free. For $20 per month, ChatGPT Plus gives subscribers faster response times and access to new features and GPT-4, GPT-4o or GPT-4o mini (the free version provides access to GPT-4o mini). The GPT-4 API was made generally available in July 2023. The ChatGPT Team plan adds management of team account roles and the ability to share conversations and GPTs among team members.

Google Gemini

Google Gemini is free, with an unlimited number of questions. Gemini Advanced, which adds more storage, integration into other Google applications and more, costs $19.99 per month.

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are useful tools for producing text –– anything from summarizing information to generating a list to creating a poem to writing an essay. Ask either AI system to explain a topic, compare or contrast two or more things or draft an email, and you’ll likely obtain a useful response.

Conversational responses

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are trained on datasets that include hundreds of billions of parameters, which results in remarkably human-like responses. Since Google Gemini has instant access to the internet, it can produce more current responses than ChatGPT.

For instance, if asked “What happened yesterday in Budapest?” Google Gemini can give several bullet points of news events, whereas ChatGPT makes inferences based on the data available as of the most recent training update. However, ChatGPT Plus can browse the internet and return similarly up-to-date answers as Google Gemini.

Employs context

ChatGPT collects information from previous conversations and prior interactions with the user, which means it can use context when engaging in a chat. Gemini can also use context in conversations and can pick up where a user left off.

For instance, if you ask: “What do you think about the new employee description I mentioned the other day?” Gemini can respond using the previous cues. However, it sometimes struggles. In this case, “the first Moon mission I asked about” was Chandrayaan-3. Neither of these systems offer as long a context window as another generative AI alternative: Claude .

Uploads: Images and documents

Google Gemini lets you upload an image and ask the system to analyze and tell you details about the image or create a caption for it.

As of August 2024, the free version of ChatGPT offers limited image uploads and image creation. Specifically, users of the free tier can create two images with DALL-E 3 per day. Users can also write a text prompt to create an image to illustrate a story, suggest a setting or convey a concept. Upload a document, such as a PDF, and ask ChatGPT questions about the document for an analysis or a summary.

• Speedy response times: ChatGPT is superior to previous generations of AI chatbots because of the speed of its responses, which makes it help businesses become more efficient.
• Ability to generate human-like responses: ChatGPT can produce more natural-sounding text than previous generations of AI chatbots, largely due to the vast amount of data it has been trained on.
• User friendly: ChatGPT can perform a wide range of tasks, from translating to condensing paragraphs to producing song lyrics, and it can do so for a wide audience. Its simple interface and straightforward responses make it an easy tool for those without technical expertise.
• Supports many programming languages: ChatGPT supports Python, JavaScript, Java and a dozen other programming languages .
• Supports 20+ languages: ChatGPT “can understand and generate text” in more than 20 languages.

Cons of ChatGPT

• Limited accuracy and reliability: ChatGPT’s responses may contain errors since it is using training data. It is also not current, although ChatGPT Plus allows access to internet information.
• Hidden bias: ChatGPT may produce biased responses due to the dataset it is trained on. The source material itself may contain biases, which can affect the responses offered by ChatGPT. For instance, ChatGPT is not great at answering questions that are not in English and may produce errors.
• No real-world understanding: ChatGPT is limited to the dataset it was trained on, and though it can produce impressive responses, it is based on what is available online, not what has been learned through real human experience.

Google Gemini pros and cons

• High-quality text generation: Google Gemini can produce human-like text that can be used for a range of tasks, from answering queries to summarizing material to translating text.
• Large dataset: Google Gemini is pretrained on a massive dataset of text and code, which allows it to generate more comprehensive and informative responses than smaller models.
• Creative text output: Google Gemini can assist in creating a variety of text, from job descriptions to hiring letters to writing reports, which makes it a versatile tool for the enterprise.
• Write code in many programming languages: Google claims that Gemini can generate code for simple and complex tasks alike in several programming languages from prompts written in natural language.
• Language support: Gemini supports more than 40 languages.

Cons of Google Gemini

• Computational resources: Large transformer models use a lot of computational resources .
• An experiment: As an experiment, Gemini may get things wrong or provide inaccurate information.

Cautions when using AI chatbots

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are still in development and may contain errors or biases. Therefore, users should be critical of the information provided by ChatGPT and Google Gemini to ensure its accuracy.

In addition, there are privacy concerns that come along with using ChatGPT or Google Gemini, which collect personal information much like search engines do. Your IP address, text and even links to your data, like phone, email and social media, can be gathered.

Should your organization use ChatGPT or Google Gemini?

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are free — unless you opt for the paid plans — and both AI chatbots are trained on large natural language models, meaning their responses tend to be similar.

Google Gemini has several features that help it stand out. For one, you can get “draft” versions of the response, which offers a variety of responses. Further, Google Gemini is completely up-to-date, with access to online information.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, provides impressive responses but lacks access to current internet information. ChatGPT Plus — with GPT-4o, access to DALL-E for images, browsing and advanced data analysis — is widely considered the leading AI chatbot.

We evaluated these products based on the free versions of ChatGPT and Google Gemini, which are free by default. We tested out how the two AI chatbots would answer the same questions, and we asked ChatGPT and Google Gemini about more current news items to test their limitations.
