Online Adjunct Faculty positions are available to qualified applicants who reside in and are authorized to work in the United States with the exception of California. Minimum qualifications for each role will be clearly outlined in the respective job posting.

To support our new adjunct faculty's success in the SNHU classroom, new faculty are required to complete an asynchronous 3-week paid online training program. The online adjunct faculty training is delivered in a cohort model and requires active participation throughout each week. The training content is a blend of understanding SNHU's faculty expectations, best practices for teaching online, pedagogy, creating student-centered learning communities, and effectively using SNHU academic technologies. The course is delivered through our learning management system (Brightspace).

Our online adjunct faculty training is facilitated by dedicated faculty trainers who are experienced SNHU faculty members.

SNHU is passionate about promoting continued learning. Online adjunct faculty are offered ongoing training and professional development opportunities through COLT (Center for Online Learning and Teaching). In fact, many of COLT’s learning events award CEUs upon successful completion since COLT has achieved accreditation through the IACET (International association for Continuing Education and Training).

Course assignments are made by our scheduling team, with the guidance of the Associate Deans. Assignments are made on a term-by-term basis, approximately 8 weeks prior to the start of the term, with adjunct instructors allowed to teach up to 10 sections in an academic year. While we try to accommodate as many scheduling requests as we can, we are not able to guarantee a regular schedule, or teaching assignments every term.

Our online adjunct faculty are instrumental in ensuring that students are successful in the class. We do this through:

  • Student Support : Provide personalized, 1-on-1 assistance and guidance to students, which also necessitates responding to student messages within 24 hours.
  • Course Feedback : Offer constructive feedback on assignments and course performance, for every assignment every week. There are 1-2 assignments that must be graded every week. grading is due within 7 days of when the assignments are due.
  • Timely Responses : Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
  • Active Online Presence : Engage in the online classroom consistently throughout the week. This is primarily done through the course discussion board. Unless otherwise indicated, faculty are expected to actively engage is every course discussion.
  • Flexibility : Accommodate diverse student backgrounds, experiences, schedules, and time zones.
  • Effective Communication : Clearly communicate concepts and foster open dialogue in all areas of the course. This will include weekly course announcements, discussion board engagement, grading feedback, and other communications with students. 
  • Collaboration : Work with advising and academic teams to enhance student success.
  • Commitment to Student Success : Strive to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Professional Development : Stay updated with teaching methods and subject knowledge.

SNHU online courses run on a term schedule . There are 6 undergraduate terms in an academic year, lasting 8 weeks each and 5 graduate terms, lasting 10 weeks each.

The standard compensation for most courses is $2,200 per 8-week undergraduate course and $2,500 per 10-week graduate course. Nursing has a separate compensation structure.

Undergraduate and graduate adjuncts are paid biweekly and are considered W2 employees.

  • Asynchronous : Courses are designed for asynchronous learning, providing flexibility and autonomy for our learners. Students engage with materials and assignments on their own schedule, while still adhering to course deadline/requirements. Asynchronous setup accommodates diverse schedules and time zones. Courses include a number of weeks and each week includes assignments that are due by the end of that week.
  • Class Size : Most courses have 25-30 students, promoting interaction and engagement. Some courses, such as writing intensive courses, may have lower course caps.
  • Course Design and Consistency : Pre-built courses maintain uniformity in topics, grading, and rubrics. This format also ensures all students meet program objectives for accreditation.
  • Supplementing Content : The course is not developed by the online adjunct instructor. Adjuncts are encouraged to bring the content to life through sharing their experiences and expertise.
  • Course Materials : Required Textbooks and resources are offered in a variety of forms, including digital textbooks, digital courseware, and physical hard copies. Required course materials and textbooks are provided for the faculty free of charge prior to the term beginning.

Job boards and university websites are a good place to start, but I don’t recommend stopping there. I also suggest reaching out to your network. Many studies have indicated that more job positions are filled through networking than through traditional job searches. Your network is not only your opportunity to find jobs that may not yet be listed (and thus have less competition), but also an indication of trust to your potential employer.

Alumni and Advisors

Your network could include alumni from your graduate (or undergraduate) program as well as professors and advisors you had during the time of your studies. Even if someone doesn’t work for an online university, they might know someone who does, so it never hurts to ask.

Professional Organizations

Joining a professional association in your field is an excellent way to build contacts–many of these organizations also post jobs for their members to see. The American Association of University Professors is another great option.

Conferences

Conferences in your field are also a way to meet those who already hold online professor jobs and may know of job openings.

The Difference Between Traditional and Online Professor Jobs

Many people dream of teaching. Giving back, student adulation, and being able to tell everyone that you teach at a university are common reasons for teaching. But what if the teaching job is online? What does that look like? Will you get the psychic rewards teaching online?

While some people fantasize about going to work in their pajamas, others feel like they’d never be able to live without in-person interaction with students. Is an online professor job just like a classroom job? The short answer is “No.” It is not better or worse, but there are some differences. I’ll discuss some of the important ones below.

In an online class, you don’t get to wander the room and dispense wisdom. However, you don’t have to worry about getting locked out of the room and you can wear anything you want. Another great point is that you can do it from anywhere that you can get an internet connection. I have communicated with students while on a bicycle tour of France and from the beach in Costa Rica. Pros: Flexibility of location (and attire) Cons : No direct contact with students

Academic Freedom

This is a broad heading for what you can do in the classroom. In an online format, much of the outline and material has been defined for you so there are fewer chances to get into deep conversations about the material. You will most likely have discussion areas but the act of typing seems to limit these discussions. All in all, you will usually have less academic freedom in an online format than you would in a traditional classroom setting. Pros: Outline and materials are often provided for you Structure Cons: Less academic freedom

Job Outlook

Enrollment in brick-and-mortar universities is steadily decreasing , leading to fewer jobs for professors in the classroom. As schools struggle to balance their budgets, they rely more on adjunct professors, who are paid less and don’t receive benefits. However, enrollment in online universities is increasing , leading to more demand for professors qualified to teach online. Pros: Job outlook for online professor positions is positive Cons: Demand for in-classroom professors is decreasing Professors are being replaced with adjuncts

Student Relations

It is much easier to develop a rapport with students in a traditional classroom. Everyone is in the same place and you can see in their faces if a point isn’t being understood. In the online format, most classes are asynchronous. While this may make your schedule more flexible, deep deep relationships are harder to foster. If connecting with your students is important to you, then online teaching may not be the best choice. Pros: More flexible schedule Cons: No face-to-face contact with students

Everyone wants to be paid. But how does an online professor’s salary compare to that of a traditional teaching job? How much you are paid will depend on the position and the field you are in. As an adjunct, you will not be overpaid in any way. Full-time professors are paid a bit more, but still often make less than those who teach in the classroom.

In the online world, I have seen compensation start at around $1200 for a 3 credit course up to in excess of $3500 for a similar 3 credit class. It can be argued that in the online format your costs are lower as you don’t have to drive to campus or buy a tweed jacket with leather elbow patches. Pros: No commuting or wardrobe costs Cons: Salary is often lower than in-classroom jobs

Most online schools have not put much emphasis on their faculty publishing. Therefore there is usually little demand for faculty to publish. On the flip side, if you want to publish as an online professor there may be few assets at the school to help you on that journey. Pros: Less pressure to publish Cons: Fewer resources and less support for publishing

Collegiality

If you are looking to interact with fellow scholars and get into discussions about deep ideas, the online format may not be right for you. Since all faculty members teach from a distance, you can’t develop relationships based upon interactions in the hall. You may not even know who the other faculty members are when you teach online. Like most distance jobs, it can be a little lonely. Pros: Reduced drama and politics Cons: No relationships with colleagues

Flexibility

This is one area in which online professor jobs shine. Teaching online gives you the flexibility to travel, watch your child’s hockey game, or simply work on your own schedule. However, be mindful that this can also be a negative as well, since a lack of separate office and set class schedule requires self-discipline. Pros: Work from anywhere with an internet connection at flexible times Cons: No in-person interaction with students or colleagues

If you are working full time and want to teach, an online teaching job can be great. You can continue to teach while on business travel and do many of the traditional classroom activities during downtime.

But, if your goal is a full-time job you will find that there are many more traditional professor jobs than online professor jobs. These jobs are growing so if you are patient there may be more of these jobs in the future.

Elevate K-12 is an Ed Tech company based out of Chicago. Our mission is to make high-quality instruction available to all students regardless of zip code.

All teaching is live and synchronous. The students are in a brick and mortar classroom setting and our teacher is live-streamed on a big screen at the front of the classroom. Students are also able to see their teacher on their own individual device.

Students are in regular school buildings throughout the US and we have programs in over 30 states from coast to coast.

The classroom coach is a paraprofessional/teaching assistant. They are with your students in person throughout the entire class period. Think of the classroom coach as your right hand – they help students with technology issues, class transitions, passing out handouts.

We cannot hire teachers with expired licenses for our certified teaching positions.

At this time, all of our teaching positions require a bachelor’s degree from the United States and US teaching certificate.

We require eligibility to work in the United States (i.e., US work authorization), but you do not have to be physically in the United States as long as you have a US bank account and a US address and phone number for payroll/tax purposes.

NO! As long as you have an area that is quiet and professional you are free to teach from wherever. We want our teachers to have the flexibility to continue to live their life and not be tied to a physical classroom.

At this time, all of our positions are contractor positions. We request that you are available for a 3+ block during school hours between 8am-4pm EST consistently Monday-Friday .

Most of our programs follow the traditional school year calendar (August-May) and are for the entire school year, however, we do partner with some schools that need our help during the middle of the school year. We do not offer summer-only positions. During the summer we offer professional development opportunities!

At this time, all of our virtual teaching positions are part-time as 1099 independent contractors , where we do not take out taxes. You will need to file your own taxes at the end of the year.

The Live Assessment is an opportunity to meet with an Onboarding Coordinator (OC) to complete a “mock lesson.” Your OC will provide you with a short content specific lesson on slides and during your meeting you will be teaching them the lesson as they role play the part of the students.

If hired, you will be sent a welcome email from an Onboarding Coordinator with information on completing your paid onboarding courses. Your Onboarding Coordinator will support you through the process to prepare you for your first day of teaching and will be available as you start teaching as well. Depending on the need, you may be offered a program as you complete your onboarding, or you may need to wait until a program becomes available that meets your content and certification.

We have our own curriculum department which creates all lessons so you have limited lesson planning. As a teacher, you will review the lesson for the day to be familiar with the material and decide which student engagement strategies you will use in your instruction of the content. Most student work is auto-graded and grading is minimal. Some content areas may require some more grading than others. You will receive information on grading requirements based on your program assignment.

If you’re looking for a well-paying, in-demand job that rewards problem-solving skills, a career in information technology might be a good fit for you. The field of IT encompasses computer systems, programming languages, software, data, information processing, and storage to create, secure, and exchange electronic data. 

Even with recent layoffs in the tech sector, Gaurav Jetley, assistant professor of computer information systems in Colorado State University ’s College of Business, says not to worry.

“IT jobs are still in demand,” Jetley says. “We will see more jobs open up later this year, hopefully.”

And it appears to be true: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 377,500 job openings are projected each year, with a median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations of $104,420 in May 2023.

For those who are interested in pursuing IT jobs, here are 10 of the field’s top-paying roles.

1. Chief Technology Officer  

Top-paying companies: Capital One, Bloomberg, AFL-CIO

Description: Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) manage an organization’s technological needs and oversee its research and development efforts. CTOs consider the needs of an organization and make investments to help them reach their goals. They also use technology to improve products that serve customers.

Average base salary: $186,703, according to Indeed .

Top-paying locations: San Diego, Calif. ($298,291), Seattle, Wash. ($255,930), New York, N.Y. ($224,111), according to Indeed .

2. Vice President of Information Technology

Top-paying companies: Oracle, Centene, USAA

Description: Vice Presidents (VPs) of Information Technology are tasked with overseeing the IT operations of an organization, including its infrastructure, security, data management, and software applications. VPs of IT direct and manage schedules, IT plans, programs, and policies related to an organization’s management of information systems, computer services, data processing, network communications, and business operations.

Description: Application Architects manage the development and troubleshooting of applications. This position requires someone to be both a master developer and an experienced leader.

4. Data Architect

Description: Data Architects design, deploy, and manage the data infrastructure of an organization. This role formulates an organization’s entire data strategy, including analyzing existing databases, planning future ones, and implementing data storage and management solutions. As practically every company employs data, this role is useful in every industry.

“They define how the data will be stored in the company, how it will be consumed,” Jetley explains.

5. Director of Information Technology

Description: IT Directors manage the information technology and computer systems of an organization under the CIO. This position makes sure that an organization’s tech solutions adequately manage the security, accessibility, and functionality of their IT framework. They also ensure proper communication between chief executives and the IT department.

Average base salary: $130,896, according to Indeed .

6. Solutions Architect  

Description: Solutions Architects develop, build, and implement an organization’s systems architecture to meet customer and business needs. This role evaluates an organization’s existing system architecture and figures out solutions to change, improve, and modernize. 

“You usually have a solutions architect in companies that are employing a cloud solution. They design these solutions,” Jetley says. “These days we’re seeing an uptick in cloud solutions architects because of AI. Most AI is running in the cloud these days.”

7. Chief Information Officer

Description: Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are responsible for managing and implementing an organization’s information and computer technology systems. This executive position figures out which technologies will benefit an organization, improve business processes, and integrate systems that help an organization achieve their goals.

“This position is not about the nitty gritty but looking at the overall strategy for the entire company,” Jetley says. “They also take care of the implementation of systems.”

8. DevOps Engineer

Description: DevOps Engineers manage an organization’s IT infrastructure. This role updates and maintains software processes with the aim of fixing bugs and improving user experience. DevOps engineers have a strong focus on automation and coordinate all teams involved with a product’s development.

“These are very technically savvy folks that basically manage the entire IT infrastructure,” Jetley says. 

Average base salary: $125,152, according to Indeed .

9. Information Security and Cybersecurity Engineers and Architects  

Top-paying companies: Capital One, MITRE, Honeywell

Description: Information Security and Cybersecurity Engineers and Architects are IT professionals who work alongside developers to make sure that software, systems, applications, and networks are secure. 

These roles may also respond to security risks faced by organizations, such as cyberattacks, security incidents, and data breaches. While architects are responsible for designing cybersecurity systems, engineers focus on building and maintaining cybersecurity infrastructure.

“These are folks who are at the forefront of technology,” Jetley says. “They have to be proactive. They have to be updated on what’s happening, what kind of new threats are emerging, and to take steps to mitigate these things.”

Average base salary: $112,619, according to Indeed .

10. Principal Software Engineer

Description: Principal Software Engineers lead teams of engineers to create high-quality, scalable software to achieve an organization’s goals. This role develops and tests software; they are also responsible for reviewing code written by other engineers, identifying the right technology to meet an organization’s needs, and creating architecture for complex software systems.

Average base salary: $111,822, according to Indeed .

The takeaway  

If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, the field of IT is a rewarding one for continuous learners who love to problem solve. For those who are just getting started, it’s a good idea to pursue certifications or a bachelor’s degree related to IT. Jetley recommends concentrating on a specialty.

“Have a general understanding of many specialties, but digging deep into one specialty is key,” Jetley says. “For that, you have to spend a considerable amount of time learning these systems.”

Georgia Southwestern State University addresses teacher shortage by adding new graduate programs

AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - Georgia Southwestern State University is seeing success in its new graduate program for those pursuing a career in Education.

According to the Georgia Department of Education, there has been a slight increase in teachers over the last few years. However, this still doesn’t address the number of vacant positions in the subjects of math, science, special Education, and other subjects.

Georgia Southwestern State University is expanding its graduate programs to those students looking to pursue a career in education.

“We also offer graduate programs. So, we have master’s programs in elementary and middle grades and Special Education. And then we also offer education specialist degrees in elementary and middle grades and teacher leadership,” said Dr. Rachel Abbott, Dean of the College of Education at GSW.

WALB spoke with one of those students pursuing a degree in Education. She says the rigorous material is setting her on the right path for her future.

“One thing we do a lot is lesson plans that every teacher uses. And the amount of lesson plans I’ve had to write being in this program is so helpful because it gives me a foundation for when I begin teaching,” said Jensen Mitchell, GSW Student.

The school now has 300 total students specializing in secondary degrees.

The College of Education just graduated its first cohort of 25 students in the online program for elementary Education for paraprofessionals.

“So we have seen a very high employment rate. Most of our students who graduate from GSW go and get a job. Most often, they like to return home,” said Dr. Rachel Abbott, Dean of the College of Education at GSW.
